In Search of My Body....Not the One I ATE! Vol. 5: Goddesses are Always on Top!

Stace--way to go on paying for your Poly trip! I am really impressed with how well you seem to manage your money at such a young age. The fact that you pay for your trips beforehand and are buying a great house--awesome! You should really be proud of this. Most of my students are 20-somethings, and let me tell you, they are all drowning in credit card debt!

As for veggie recipes, I have posted a few just in these past few days, so there are some to start. And for quick and easy--Boca burgers (100 calories, fat free, no carbs, and all protein) and Smart Dogs (same, though even lower calories) are always good to just have on hand.

And Liz--Mexican pie recipe coming up.

Dawn--yes, HFCS is in tons and tons of stuff. We are careful about it in this house, always have been. So you don't have to spend hours and hours in the store, here is the website that just lists all of the brands and products that don't have HFCS:

E - Thanks. Prior to Bruce getting his job with the VA last year, money was pretty tight, primarily due to the wedding,a nd Brue has a significant amount of student loans due to going to Syracuse University for 6 years. That really forced me to learn to budget (i have a color coded excel budget that I update every day) and save money. Then when Bruce got the new job, that literally almost doubled his salary, that money (minus the little bit that we needed to spend to move to Canandaigua, which is a little more expensive of an area) went into savings, and paying for the wedding. The wedding and honeymoon were completely paid off with money left in our savings before the wedding day. I think that is huge, a lot of people have debt from their weddings at my age. Using the mindset we got into when we didn't have any money, helped us really pay things down (student loans & car) and now we are in the position that i was able to pay this semester of grad school without taking loans, save enough for a house downpayment/closing costs, and easily were able to pay for the vacation and budget the mortgage. My friends tend to laugh at me when I mention my spreadsheets..... but then again those are also friends who can't afford vacations, drive clunkers, and live in dive apartments.... so i figure i can let them laugh ;)

OH and I forgot the most fun part of my day!!! I PAID OFF OUR MAY DISNEY TRIP Only like 48 days!! :woohoo: :cool1: :yay:

Stacey - congrats on paying for the trip!!! 48 days is going to go by in no time and then you will be at the Poly and I'll be jealous because I'll be here. :rotfl:

I'll be looking for your post tomorrow saying that you went to the gym. Don't make me get Nancy involved. She is begging for a whistle and this may send her out to buy one.

I spend at least 1-2 hours every time I go shopping, looking at labels, etc. It's a must-do to eat healthy.

I feel like we have gone over this ground before, though. Liz and E and I (and others here) have been saying over and over again for well over a year...
1) Veggies, fruits (whole, not juice) and label-watching are essential
2) Maximizing your calories/points with an emphasis on more veggies, higher fiber, and lower fat, both makes you feel fuller longer, and is better for your overall health.
3) Higher fat foods = less food for your calories, negating #2

Not to say that all of us follow this all the time, because of course no-one is perfect, and I am sure FAR from perfect. But this litany, which is a good one and is backed up by repeated studies, articles, and our real-life anecdotal evidence, is repeated over and over and over again here as the standard to try and achieve.

Stacey, I LOVE Cheesecake Factory but man that cheesecake is spawn of the devil. So good, and so not good for you. One slip, dust off, move forward! :)

OMG i know, can i just tell you, i swear i could feel my pants getting tighter with every bite.....blech..... so good, but so doesn't seem worth it!

Hi gang,

Note to self - working out six days in a row is not good. I was wiped out tonight and it showed. Still got a great workout in, but not quite as good as when I take a day off in the middle. Someone remind me to do that next week - Nancy???

Dawn - sounds like you are on the right track. You have a lot of changes going on all at once so take things one day at a time, one step at a time. It is a lot to take in, but keep pushing.

Nancy - hope the drama club rehersals are going well. We miss you around here.

Lyz - how was your day - and more importantly, your dinner?

Liz - how's mom doing? Hopefully, she is feeling a bit better tonight.

Kelly - hope you enjoyed your time with McSteamy and McDreamy.

Kat - so quiet tonight. Hope your mood is getting better.

Erika - still waiting for the recipe you promised us. Just sayin...

Amy - finished packing yet? Want to do mine for my trek to Long Island?

Amiee - how are you? Did you get your reservations?

LisaPR - Hope all is well. I am missing my morning wake up call...

LisaV - when does she come home? Miss you.

LisaZ - your class sounds very cool. Just the type that I would be looking for. If I get to Baltimore, I am looking you up.

Roddy - you have been pretty quiet. Is Kat holding you hostage or something?

Ronda - how is C25k going? Still loving it?

Sunny - where have you been? Did you lose your password again?

Stacey - yeah for making some good choices at the Cheesecake Factory. Not sure I could have resisted the cheesecake either...

Steph - look at our walker go. How is Mocha doing?

Sarah - we miss you. Hope all is well.

Hope I caught everyone. Sorry if I missed someone.

Off to pack for my trip and then get a little protein snack. I moved a lot of weight around tonight and my stomach is grumbling.

One last post and then I will let others jump in...

To everyone who has commented on my change in attitude this year (yes that means all of you). Thank you for all of the support. I don't handle this kind of stuff well so I am a little embarrassed (where is the blushing smiley when you need it) when you mention that.

I am just being me and don't think I am doing any more than you all are doing which is trying to fight the fight for another day. I have learned so much from all of you and that is what has gotten me to where I am today.

I learned to love exercise and try things I could never believe I could do before because I watched folks here become runners, complete races, log in mile after mile, play hockey, etc.

I learned to look at food for nutrients and fuel because people here taught me to look to other means to deal with stress. I heard words like tell us what is wrong, gripe here, leave it on the gym floor and lots of you will get through this and we won't let you fail.

I learned to laugh at myself and have fun because that's what we do best. I learned to ask for help when I need it and to support others when they need it.

I learned to have confidence in myself and in my abilities because I had all of you waiting to hear how I did and standing ready to cheer me on or console me no matter what the results were.

Most importantly, I learned that I am not alone in this and that together with the support of my family and friends here that the support of a group such as this is worth more than anything I learned at Jenny Craig or at the gym.

So - Thanks again for everything and can we now get back to the fun stuff. This is getting way too mushy for my tastes.

It's OK to be mushy every now and then..... beautiful post

Paula!! What a wonderful post. Wonderful. You almost made me teary-eyed (and that is something!).

Good evening everyone!!

All packed, ready to go. :thumbsup2 Unfortunately I have done something to my back. I am guessing I may have pulled a little something on one of the occasions when I have to pick up Little D. It's not excruciating or anything, just sore. I did a little easy stretching tonight that seemed to help a little.

I am enjoying a glass of blueberry pinot noir and then will be off to bed. I am a nervous traveler. Not about flying, but the logistics of getting to airport, through security and all that. :scared1:

Paula-Loved your last post. :goodvibes

Stacey-Awesome that your trip is paid for! :cool1: Have you made ADR's yet?

Dawn-Everyone else had great suggestions and thoughts for you. :goodvibes

Kelly-WTG on the loss!!

Challenge for this week:

Water-on track
Exercise minutes-135/1500
Weight-DOWN 1 pound to 184

I have a plan to get back to running regularly on Saturday. My parents have a kick a$$ TM, so I will be taking advantage of it.

I will check in at least a couple times while in VT/NH.

Have a good week everyone!!

(And remember Twilight comes out Saturday! I will get my Edward fix! :lovestruc )

Good Afternoon everybody -

I am caught up to page 110 - that is all. Taxes are being submitted this afternoon. Computer crashed -could not retrieve all the data we saved on top of needing to re-boot everything etc. I am not the computer guru of the home but long story short - all is well again - just time consuming and our refund is awesome. Should be enough to cover the remodeling of the kitchen and a few other household necessities as well so I am greatful to God.

Got the results back from Doc. PCOS is a positive and that means Metabolic Syndrome. Insulin resistance for lack of a better word. Vitamin D low and need fish oil (1000 ml a day) The D I am taking once a week for 12 weeks and now Metformin at night as well. Check back with her in about 2 months for re-eval. Am tracking by diabetic standards ( carbs/fat) and everything coming into the house is High Fructose Corn Syrup free. Need to do more research to make sure I have all the info accurate.

Basics though are the food I eat needs to be less than 1/3 calories from fat and have less than 45-55 g of fat a day. Need 45-60g of carbs per meal (x3) and 15-30g for a snack (2 x). 300mg of cholesterol a day or less.

So I have Dan getting a flow chart ready for me so all this can be tracked and iot is different than points/calories so I need to see if something on line will help with that.

I am doing well though and Dan is helping a ton. He is so patient at the grocery store. I am making a dietician appt at the hospital for the end of next week also for more thorough info.

Have you consulted your doctor about this diet? My doc didn't want me to go over 75 carbs (20 for the first week and 50-75 max going forward). Also, cholesterol really shouldn't go over 200mg for the day.

Following the diet above will do nothing for your insulin resistance. I'm curious, how high is your insulin?

EE--since we are talking food and recipes tonight, the Boca is my staple, too. But I have found a way to make it a huge treat.

I love, love, love sauteed and carmelized onions. So yummy. So I will fry up (with just a little olive oil) like 4 or 5 onions. A TON. :rotfl2: And I really cook them for a long time until they are deep brown and carmelized. Then I just throw them in a container in the fridge for the week. Any time I want a Boca, I just heat some of the onions up, and then I can have them on top of the boca burger. And really, it changes a boring veggie burger into something totally yummy.

J does the same thing except with mushrooms and swiss.

For the kids, they like bacon cheese burgers (veggie bacon, of course). So I will do it that way for them. Again, just takes something boring and makes it one of my favorite meals.

both of those sound yummy. I love the flame grilled one. grilled onions

I know this might sound disgusting, but I love grilling some cabbage up and adding a little pepper cheese on top of one. Yum

WORD to both Kat and Paula.

Kat is dead right. Fruits and vegetables are important for a bunch of reasons. Obviously, they are nutrient-rich. But in addition to that, they are high in fiber and good carbs. This FILLS YOU UP so you eat less. And it also flushes you out, so your body purges toxins. Also, since it is roughage, it works your metabolism. And continuous working of your metabolism increases your metabolic rate. Thus, you burn calories and fat easier and more quickly. So if you want to bulk up your food intake and slim down your waistline, fruits and vegetables are the way to go.

Oh--and FRESH. Not canned. And raw is considered better (more roughage and you can cook the nutrients out if you are not careful). If you have to have cooked, (or just want them that way for a change), steam them instead of sautee. And steam them until al dente. That is a good rule for knowing that you are not cooking the important vitamins out.

Dawn--start posting your good again. I am interested to see where this new eating plan takes you.

And listen to EE. When it comes to insulin stuff, she knows what she is talking about. She has been on the insulin-resistance eating plan for months, has lost major weight, and feels much better all around. :worship: So if she is saying your carbs sound high, you might want to just double-check and make sure you wrote the info. down correctly, etc.

Paula--I loved what you had to say.

Interesting, I was thinking similar thoughts yesterday on the bike. (20 miles and you get a lot of thinking done. :rotfl2: ) Seriously though, I was just feeling the love yesterday and thinking about how happy I am that I have you guys for support, to laugh with, to learn from, to vent to, all of it. :lovestruc

I was without electricity for 2 hours. So that's where I went. We took to the couch with books and a blanket. Conserve energy and heat! Read!

Dinner tonight - no plans. Just made a pb and J for Em. Nick is super tired and going to bed at 8pm. So we are doing pick up. I have tons of stuff in the fridge for him or her or me. Maybe once a week we do the pick up - sandwiches, soup, leftovers. I actually like that. It's very relaxed.

I don't stress about dinner, though, because I'm the only one who cares. Nick is very very easy. He doesn't even make fun when I make it up and it doesn't turn out good.

Mexican bean pie recipe??? Please???? For the binder!

No power!!!! :scared1: What did you read??? I am a reading freak.
