In Room Cooking: Rice Cooker?

I want to know how to cook white rice in the microwave! I end up making the boil in bag rice because I can't make it unsticky on the stove, and until today :) I didn't want to buy a rice cooker to make rice once a week or less!

this is to funny. This it turning into the cooking thread. To make white rice in the microwave:

1 cup White rice such as riceland rice
2 cups water
1 tsp salt
1 TBS of butter

honestly you make it just like you do any rice. You can use chicken broth instead of water, skip the butter salt etc. My microwave is a 1000 watt microwave and it comes out perfect every time.

Put ingredients in a deep 2 qt covered microwave safe dish. If using plastic wrap poke a whole in it or vent slightly.

microwave high 100% power for 5 mins

reduce to 50% medium for an additional 15 mins.

remove dish and all to stand covered for 5-10 mins. Fluff with a fork.

Also I just use a microwave safe bowl and plastic wrap. I do the first 5 mins while I am home. Then do the last 15 mins when I run out the door to pick up my son from his after school program and it is done perfect when I get home. I would make it while you are home the first time to make sure the timing works for you and the bowl etc. If the bowl is to shallow it might over flow. Have fun I imagine you can get creative with this by adding things to it such as dill etc. If anyone does please share I would love to know how it turns out!

I couldn't cook rice on the stove until an old lady told me how. (Why I didn't think of this sooner, I have no clue) She told me to forget all the *water to rice ratios* and don't measure anything. Pour the rice in and add a WHOLE BUNCH OF WATER. Boil and drain like you would spaghetti or other noodles. Comes out perfect every time! :thumbsup2

I remember seeing Julia Child use this method.

Oh, forgive me! I had totally forgotten the allure of ordering a second hamburger bun so as to split a double burger (including free condiments!) with a companion...of course, the glamour of such a purchase would totally obviate one's interest in making paella, steamed ginger pudding, or steamed brocolli with garlic vinaigrette - all safely and inexpensively.

And I don't want to forget the ole' frozen PB&J in a toaster oven thing - so much more attractive and nutritious than biryani, risotto, or polenta with sausage.

I do understand you wanting to save a little money, and have more nutritious meals than counter service. However, I don't think I would want to stay in a room where the previous guest was cooking sausage.

I learned to cook great rice the same way,no measuring just boil, then drain rinse,'dry' in the pan and eat in a thai cooking class-
this thread is highly amusing BTW....:happytv: anyway- years ago on Oprah I saw some guy selling a book about how to make all kinds of convenience foods in your in room cofee maker.... anyone ever hear of it? i'd love to get a copy.... barring that though, a cup of ramen noodles or easy mac and cheese could easily be done with just the hot water from the coffee pot..... I usually have a kitchen, but i still liked the idea....

Oh, even better - there's a (hard-to-find now) book called "Manifold Destiny". It's got recipes and instructions for cooking in - are you ready for this.... - your car's engine!

Ah ewwwwwww! I hope it is a brand spanking new car!

Well, it's a good excuse to buy a new car... "Honey, the pilot light's out in the oven; let's go get a new car" :teeth:
