The Running Thread - 2026

I would just trim as much as feels comfortable and you should be okay. If you're worried about it snagging or something while you're on the court, you could always wrap a bit of athletic tape around it, but I've never actually had that happen except while putting on/taking off my socks.

As someone who perpetually has 4-7 toenails in varying non-standard states, I feel that I am an authority in this matter. 😅

As someone who suddenly has 4 bruised toenails from my MW PR in fun, I feel this! I don’t get why this race did my toes in but here we are.

As someone who has had this issue many times over the years, I concur with WillRunForPizza. Since I went up yet another half a size in shoes, my toenails are doing way better. Nary a toenail issue after Dopey, which feels like a miracle!
thanks for confirming my instincts with this.

Also. I'm really annoyed that it's essentially taken 5 months for this to happen.

I have a toe nail situation. Back in August, I got a blister under the nail of my right big toe during my trail race. Having experienced something similar one other time, I drained it immediately and it barely bruised. But I figured it would fall off at some point. And then, as the nail grew, there was this bubble-like ridge that formed laterally across the nail, and I assumed that a new nail was growing underneath. (I was correct.)

Well as of (checks watch) 15 minutes ago, the left side of the "bad" part of the nail has [finally] detached. But the problem is that it hasn't released all the way across. Meaning that on the right side it's still attached to the nail bed.

I will not include a picture of the actual toe. But here is a diagram of what I have going on. I need to trim some part of this thing off, but I'm not sure how aggressive I should be. As this is only the 2nd bruised/black/lost nail I've experienced in 5 years, please help me figure this out because I have to leave for a basketball game in 2 hours.

I had a somewhat similar situation that also took forever for the nail to start detaching. I'm a baby though and put a bandaid on it until it was fully ready to fall out.

Wanna trade? I’m running a half on Sunday and the starting temp is forecasted to be 65. That’s about 20 degrees warmer than I prefer. I’d much rather run in 20F than 70F.

So, I have no race on Sunday, but will happily exchange our predicted 18F at 8am Sunday with you if that's on the table. If a race is required, I can improvise.😀

I concur. Also, I have in the past trimmed off what could be comfortably taken off, and used superglue to glue down the loose part so that it doesn't snag and tear off.

OK, I need to crowd source a question: DW gave me an OpenMove headset for Christmas 2021, which I then used for Dopey 2022 and I don't know how many runs since then. In the past few days, the left side of it has quit working. When I called Shokz a few minutes ago, the help person said it was out of warranty and they don't do repairs.
I get that they are way out of warranty, but I hate to just toss them, and I see that they sell refurbished, which may be why I thought that they did repairs.
Thoughts or comments? Did I have a not-so-trained help person, or is it simply time to upgrade?

I'll take that trade! Sunday at 8a it's going to be 24deg with a feels like of 13deg and freezing rain here. We're supposed to get ~3/4" of ice coating over the weekend into Monday. Hope everyone stays safe with this winter storm sweeping through!

I’ll take it! I will need to somehow procure some pants though because I only packed running shorts.

You two need to split the difference 😂😂
I wish!!!!!!!

Sorry, I’m not interested in ice. I also hope everyone stays safe and retains their electricity.

I'll take your 18F if someone can take my -17F (feels like -27F) at about the same time, I can't even walk my dog in that weather and she's half Bernese.
No thanks. Its forecast to be below zero back home on Sunday and there’s a reason I won’t be there. 🥶. I’m very hopeful this is the last of the Arctic blasts.

We just got back from WDW on Thursday and it was -11 when we landed. 🥶 It won’t get above zero until maybe tomorrow. I’m doing a delayed MW recovery week. Hope you’re down there long enough that this passes!

Same here. We are prepared for icy trees and power lines to come down and 3-4+ days with no power, so now DH can pull out his Arctic gear from military days in Norway!😂
I haven’t run but once since MW since I came home with a bad cold > sinus infection> chest congestion > steroid shot and antibiotics > very slow improvement.
I know it will get better when it warms up.
Team Toasty all the way!

Oh, and DS and band are playing music this morning for the Athens (GA) Marathon, HM, and marathon relay. It’s happening, but I think they are offering a move to virtual for those who are traveling and possibly couldn’t get home in the ice. Looks like the in-person races will finish just before the freezing rain starts.

My fluffy pom/peke mix may be from Texas, but he LOVES the cold. However, at -10F with a wind chill of -33F this morning, our jaunt outside was just long enough to take care of business.
That is brutally cold. And you're getting the snow too - hope you and your pup stay warm!

For all the Saucony fans out there (@FFigawi) Feb 2 is the release date for the long awaited Pro 5 as well as the new Endorphin Azura. Reviews I’m seeing are “meh” on the pro, very little has changed and at 230 isn’t worth it but the new model is possibly the best daily trainer in a long time. If anyone gets their hands (or feet) on a pair of these I’d love to know opinions.
My real dilemma is the Elite 3 is scheduled for a June release. What to do? I planned on buying another pair of the 2s when they discount them as they are my absolute favorite race shoe to run in but it looks like the 3 might be even better if that’s possible.
I’m looking forward to hearing how the Azura are. I love my Speed 5, and can always use another shoe in the rotation.

You too! We're used to cold, but this is a bit extra. The snow doesn't start until tomorrow afternoon and the forecast is ranging from 7 inches (no big deal) to two feet (uhhh)! They do say it's going to be super light and fluffy though, so hopefully that means no downed limbs and easy snow blowing. I'll take it over the ice some of you are getting!

Stay safe! The bad weather is supposed to get here around sunset tonight.

I haven't run since MW, either. I had planned for most of this to be rest, but I picked up a respiratory bug on the way home from MW, too. It's crazy how many people came home sick after the weekend.
