In Every Run That Must Be Done; There is an Element of Fun (comments welcome)

61 Days Until: TC Women’s Half

We briefly interrupt this trip report to say: I ran today. I ran too fast, and my Achilles hurt (not because I ran too fast, I think I was sitting wrong during the day), but I finished all the miles that were on the schedule, and my pace was consistent(ly too fast)

58 Days Until: TC Women’s Half

Last night, I did my first 400m repeat workout since December, because I was banned from speed workouts to prevent irritating my Achilles. I ended up being ~10 seconds slower now than when I originally did it, but I was trying to run continuously, so I needed to change the pace. And I still needed a short, maybe 10 second, walk break at about the midway mark. But I was reasonably consistent, so I’m okay with it.

Yes, I know I’m technically just short of 400m (or .2485 miles, as my converter app tells me), but I work with the longest flat section with landmarks I’ve got available near my house. I just run from one stop sign to the next, and then walk back and do it again, I don’t have to worry about missing the finish point.

57 Days Until: TC Women’s Half

I ran too fast again today. It’s not entirely shocking, since I was doing 60/60 instead of 30/45, but I need to work on slowing down. After my training run, I did a Magic Mile. In hindsight, I probably should’ve done it first, but it all worked out in the end.

During my run, I discovered that my neighborhood has a gang of middle school girl skateboarders, which is just adorable. They were much better at sharing the road than the teenage boy on an electric skateboard Thursday that was texting and riding when he almost ran me down.

Training Run
I got closer to my goal pace in the third mile, but was still too fast.

Magic Mile
I put my 11:18 into Galloway’s calculator (even though I’m not doing a Galloway plan) and it gave me a half marathon pace of 13:34. The pace of my current (unofficial) half marathon PR from the end of January? 13:32 So I guess there’s something to the calculator 😁

Springtime Surprise Trip Report: April 12

Stats of the Day: 14,441 steps; 5.87 miles

This was my Hollywood Studios and Disney Springs day. I started the day with Tower of Terror, as I usually do. I ended up in an elevator mostly full of teenagers from a school group who had never been on before. Newbies are the best to ride with, especially a bunch of teens hyping each other up and freaking out just a little. It’s so entertaining to me.

Yes, that’s me in the back, fully prepared for the photo and having the time of my life, unlike everyone else.

After ToT, I think I grabbed a snack, even though I had lunch scheduled for 11:30. Then I did a LL for Toy Story Midway Mania and scored 139,800, with an accuracy of 65%. Then I had a nice lunch at Sci-Fi, though I felt bad for the little boy in front of me because he was too scared of the movie trailers to even eat his food. Before I left, I grabbed a LL for Runaway Railway after much refreshing to get a good time.

After my last ride of the morning, I hopped the skyliner back to Pop to grab my Gideon’s reusable cooler bag and head to Disney Springs. Once the bus finally came, I went straight to Gideon’s and got in line, waited about 30 minutes, and bought myself 4 cookies to bring home, and, since hot cookie started just before I got in there, I got a hot cookie a la mode and found a chair under shelter somewhere to eat it while it was sprinkling just a bit. I don’t care what they say at Gideon’s—those cookies are amazing when hot 😋

Side note about my Gideon’s visit—after I got home, I realized that instead of my original chocolate chip, I was given a pistachio toffee (which made my grandma happy, but not me). I emailed Gideon’s just to give some feedback that they should make sure cookies are labeled behind the counter. I made clear that I wasn’t expecting anything, just giving a suggestion, but I got an response pretty quickly requesting the last 4 digits of my CC so they could figure out who served me and refund the mistaken cookie.

I wandered around Disney Springs a bit, but didn’t buy anything. I went back to the resort and got things ready for yoga at Hollywood Studios in the morning and tried to get to sleep early.

Well, my long hill progressive repeats were almost perfect, I just got the paces on the first 2 backwards. Also, my hill might’ve been a little steeper than was ideal, but it’s what I could find nearby that wasn’t running past houses (because I figure people might get weirded out by someone running past their house every 3 minutes 😂😂) And this hill will be great practice for my favorite part of WDW runDisney races: blasting past people on hills, especially that ramp after the cloverleaf before Epcot.

Springtime Surprise Trip Report: April 13–Yoga at HS

Stats of the day: 21,045 steps (10,890 rD-related); 8.77 miles

I got up on time and made it to the bus to yoga. I much prefer the logistics of yoga at HS vs MK, since you don’t have the extra step of loading everyone on the ferry. Once I was through security and lined up at the tapstiles, it was time to just wait. But I ended up standing next to (but on the other side of a tape line that MUST NOT BE CROSSED 😂😂—per a CM) from @lookingforsunshine and her friend, so that was a neat coincidence. I was in the first group of people to get in, so I got a second row mat. These mats are a vast improvement on the terrible cheap things they had when I did Princess Yoga in 2022, and the little towel was handy.

On the way in, there were Pixar characters to take pictures of, but I was mostly focused on getting a good spot, so I only snapped one picture before heading for the mats.

On the center “stage” Woody and Mike were hanging out, so I grabbed some selfies while we waited for 5am

The yoga was good and well-suited to novices. It was a good way to get started on the whole “wake up in the middle of the night to do stuff” routine. Before we left, they played the animation show that they do in the evenings, which was super fun (except for the woman standing next to me and texting with her bright screen the whole time—seriously, who are you texting at 6 in the dang am, lady?) and then all the Pixar characters came out for selfies and stuff. I skipped the selfies, but tried to snap pics as they passed me (I’ll spare you seeing how bad those turned out).

After yoga, I hopped on the bus to the Grand Floridian because I had a breakfast reservation. I think GF is a bit too fancy for my taste, and probably wouldn’t go there again. Also, they seriously skimp on the amount of food when you get the Mickey waffle—it’s one waffle (bigger than the little ones at QS breakfast, but still not huge) and 2 pieces of bacon! If I’d known if would be so little, I’d have gotten the pancakes, despite my desire to have a Mickey Waffle, because I saw those go by to another table and there were 2 fluffy, plate-sized pancakes! At least I got a couple biscuits to eat too, otherwise I would’ve needed a second breakfast, and I try not to eat like a hobbit too often 😄😄
9C540EA8-F9F6-4AFF-84C1-34B51DBACC1C.jpg

After breakfast, I still had a ton of time to kill before the expo buses would start (my original plan had been to catch one from GF after breakfast, but everything took much less time than I thought) So I hopped the monorail to MK and caught a bus back to Pop so I wouldn’t have to carry my yoga mat through the expo. I caught the first expo bus, got my bib and shirts from the Platinum CrD pickup, did my shopping (and winced at the price of the pin set—but still bought it), shopped the vendors (because I needed a blue Sparkle visor to finish off my Joy costume, and I bought another Sparkle skirt because I shouldn’t be allowed to have a CC unsupervised), grabbed a discounted water park ticket, and then headed out. I was at the bus stop to leave the expo by 10:15.

An hour later, I was on the skyliner and headed for Epcot. I had an early afternoon LL for Guardians, but other than that, I was just going to walk around and enjoy the Flower & Garden topiaries. I grabbed a hot dog in America for lunch and then went in to listen to the Voices of Liberty and then watch The American Experience because I’ve missed it the last couple times I’ve visited and I’m a sucker for it (and Hall of Presidents)

After wandering around World Showcase, it was time to head to Guardians. I love this ride! But I always need a snack or a drink afterward, so I got an ice cream sandwich. I was going to eat it on a bench, but I felt a couple tiny drops of rain, and didn’t want to have to clean my glasses, so I went into the cafe. I felt a like an absolute genius when it started POURING a little while later. I had a poncho in my purse, but I really didn’t want to deal with wet shoes, so I hung out in the cafe for a bit, then crossed over to the shop and wasted some time in there. Finally, it stopped raining! I checked the app, and it didn’t say anything about the skyliner being closed for weather, so I headed toward the IG. Of course, once I made it all the way there, there was a sign that the skyliner was closed! 🤬 I headed for the station anyway because I know they usually get people where they need to go and I didn’t want to walk all the way back to the front of Epcot for a bus (I would’ve just headed there to begin with if the app had told me the skyliner was down) It took forever for them to get everyone bused out of there and I was very annoyed, but at least I was under cover when it rained again. Finally, I got a bus back to my resort and made it to my room.

But then I had to walk all the way back to the main building to complain to someone that housekeeping had invaded my room against my wishes and moved a bunch of my stuff!! I checked the phone, but there was no button to call the front desk or anything, and I wanted to make sure that my “no housekeeping” preference was definitely noted. They felt bad, and later I got a call from the building manager explaining that the housekeeping system and the preferences systems hadn’t been speaking to each other that day (not exactly the words he used) and he told me to keep my “room occupied” sign on my door all the time (which caused its own problem, but that’s a story for another day) to prevent further intrusions.

I spent some time relaxing, setting out my 5K clothes, and putting together my sash of core memories before I settled in for bed. I actually managed 6 hours of sleep. I figured out that if I played an audiobook (Neil Gaiman reading his Norse Mythology) at low volume, it worked to kind of drown out the screeching children at the pool. This is now my new bedtime routine, because it also gives that part of my brain that wants to focus on stupid stuff instead of sleep something to latch onto, without being something that will keep me awake. I doubt this would work with any other narrator, but I know that Neil’s voice knocks me out (I once nodded off on a plane because I was listening to him, and I don’t sleep on planes—EVER)

I decided it was time to run somewhere other than the neighborhood, and since it hasn’t rained for a while, I chose the Luce Line trail. It was 99% mud free, which is about the best you can hope for in any year without a drought. But there were a lot of little sticks and bits of wood left over from the bad winter that was just brutal for trees. The horse trail alongside the pedestrian/bike trail is still closed for another week or two because of fallen trees.

In true Disney Princess fashion, I hadn’t even finished my warmup walk before I found a new little friend. Per a Google search, this is a red-bellied snake. They don’t get much bigger than this (about the thickness of a pencil and maybe 8 inches long) and are non-venomous. I used a stick to encourage this one get off the trail, since I can’t expect cyclists to be able to tell the difference between a little snake and a little stick while going a million miles an hour.

In less visually appealing news, I hate people! This is in the woods by the trail parking lot I use. I’m guessing it was snowmobilers over the winter. How hard is it to pack your trash (and also not drinking and snowmobiling, but that might be a bridge too far 🙄🙄)

A number of my chipmunks have been awake and active. Ein is definitely the most active, and the biggest beggar. I happened to glance behind me while I was eating lunch today and snapped this pic of Ein expecting his lunch to be delivered.

50 Days Until: TC Women’s Half

Well, my progression run today was successful(ish). I successfully ran each mile faster than the last. But the first 2 miles were a bit too fast. I had been watching the “current split” pace on my watch and thought I was pretty much right on, but when the mile came up, it was 10-15 seconds faster than I thought. So that’s a thing I know for the future.

49 Days Until: TC Women’s Half

I attempted to be a responsible runner today. I drank 2 bottles of water in the hours before my run, finishing about a half hour before my last chance at a bathroom and an hour before the run started. I checked the T+D (72+54) and tried to adjust my pace accordingly, from 13:30 to 13:46. And I still struggled. Yes, I somehow managed to get the overall pace to be about what I was aiming for, but the splits were all over the place! Mostly, I forgot that there aren’t leaves on the trees yet, so there’s no shade. I’m going to need to run earlier or later to avoid the strong sunlight.

I took a 2 minute break on a bench at the beginning of mile 4, and that helped bring my heart rate down and give me a second wind, it just didn’t last quite long enough.

My other achievement of the day was scattering wildflower seeds on a scrubby part of our property. I also helped my grandma transplant about 2 dozen ferns that had spread outside their designated spaces. By tomorrow, there will probably be half a dozen more. We must have hundreds of the darn things, all from a bucket of ferns we got from my great-aunt’s neighbor’s neighbor some years ago. They do a great job of greening up the woods and keeping the weeds down, so we planted all the strays into a new area that we’re trying to choke the buckthorn out of. But the flower seeds are for a hillside along our lawn (the part we call “the pasture” because it’s grassy, but not the same kind of lush grass of the main lawn around the house, and it’s closest to where cows used to live next door)

I don’t expect much of these will grow, but I’m sure some will, and be much better than weeds and bare dirt. And this is also the section where we had all the milkweed and monarch caterpillars last year. We also planted more milkweed seeds in the fall, so this area could get to be really nice.

44 Days Until: TC Women’s Half

This is a double run post, because I forgot to post Wednesday’s run (which was supposed to be Tuesday’s run)

So, Tuesday’s run didn’t happen because while I was working, my grandma was digging up excess plant from the garden, and told me I could plant them in the wildflower area. So I had to do that right after work. By the time I finished that, I was really hungry, so I had to eat dinner. And by the time that was finished and settled, it was just too late to get motivated enough to go run, so I switched Wednesday’s stationary bike with Tuesday’s run.

Minnesota has officially moved on from spring and headed into summer, with temps about 10 degrees higher than what’s normal for this time of year. After my experience on Sunday, I know that running in full afternoon sun is a mistake for me, so I planned to do this run at about 7:30pm. Still light enough for me to see perfectly (though I did wear my Noxgear so cars could see me better) I did the T+D calculations and I needed to slow down from 13:30 to 13:54. I actually managed to achieve about that and it felt really good. Miles 3 and 4 only seem off pace because mile 3 ended right at the end of a walk interval and mile 4 ended right at the end of a run interval—the first 2 miles ended more in the middle of intervals.

Thursday’s run did not go as well. Due to temperature, I also did this one later in the evening, and tried to adjust the pace. But because it was 400m repeats, I don’t have as good a feel for the pacing, so I was way too fast and then way too slow and I called it after 6 (I was supposed to do 8) because it was just going badly. My watch also missed my double-tap at the end of the first recovery period, so I had to make a note of where I was time-wise for later (the recovery took 4:01)

On Wednesday’s run, I got some nice pictures:

On Tuesday, my grandma was refreshing the “creek beds” in the garden, which are areas filled large rocks for the water to run out of the yard and down the hill into the woods, by lifting and resettling each rock. But Ein lives under one of the creek beds, so she told me to mark the rock over his front door so she wouldn’t disturb it.

42 Days Until: TC Women’s Half

Saturday got away from me and I never found time to do my run. I was going to get up early and do it, but stayed up too late on Friday. Then I was going to do it after dinner, but it was raining. So I did a longer run today than was scheduled, but not excessively long for where I am in the training (6.5 miles instead of 5) For the first 4 miles, I did 60/60 intervals, since that was what yesterday’s run should have been, and then switched to 30/45 for the rest of the run. I also walked about 2 miles at The Arb, so I figure I came close enough for the weekend.

I chose to do the Katrina Lake Loop, which I haven’t done yet this year. It’s really pretty in the spring with crabapple trees, and what we think are wild plum, which smell AMAZING. The T+D was 111, so a 1% adjustment to the pace came to 13:46. I was feeling pretty good, and ended up a little fast, but at least didn’t exceed the original scheduled pace of 13:30.

I learned 2 things on my short hill ladder workout yesterday:
1) no matter how tired you are, get your butt out of bed and do it before work when it’s 55°F, instead of 75°F
2) 1/10 of a mile is too short for the watch to measure consistently at different paces, so pick a start and end point and do it manually, even though that’s annoying.

I have no idea exactly how accurate these splits are, since I wasn’t ending the runs at the same point each time. The idea was to find a steepish hill about .10 miles in length and do 10 repeats (with a downhill recovery in between) like this:
easy
medium
medium-hard
hard
hardest
hardest
hard
medium-hard
medium
easy

I like the hill repeats (although maybe not in the moment 😆) because they’re great practice for the entrance ramp into Epcot.

I do hill repeats by time instead of distance because of the problem you mention. You could set up 30-second intervals, for example, with a 60-second recovery. That would mean you would got somewhat different distances depending on your pace, but that's not really a big deal given the point of the workout.

I like the distance because it’s really easy afterward to compare pace from Point A to Point B and see if I’m getting the progression right. And my road is full of filled cracks that make easy-to-see start and finish lines 😆

This morning, I embraced the suck and got out of bed to run before work. Good thing too, since the wind switched from the south, which cleared the smoke haze from the last couple days, to WNW in the afternoon, which brought it back with a vengeance—I can smell/taste the smoke in the air now.

The T+D was just 104, so only a tiny adjustment to the easy pacing. Since I was on a deadline, I had to run in the neighborhood, which I’m really bored with.

For the rest of my weekday runs this summer, I’m planning to do them before work whenever possible. I had a 1-on-1 with my boss today, and I asked, and was given permission, to start and finish work an hour later on Tuesdays and Thursdays so I don’t have to get up before dawn when I hit the 6, 7, and 8 mile runs in July and August. Basically none of the work I do is collaborative, so I could do it in the middle of the night and no one would really know the difference, so I was fairly confident my boss would be cool with it. For the shorter runs, the extra time will allow me to run places other than the neighborhood, which will not only be a nice change of scenery, but also let me run on the flat rail trails.

Today, we have 2 less frequently featured chipmunks:

And as a bonus: Mia being a derpy cat in a box she barely fits in (which is the best kind, obviously)

30 Days Until: TC Women’s Half

Wow! It’s been over a week since I posted anything!

So, last Saturday’s progression run went off the rails because I way over-dressed for the temp. I was out on Friday morning at the same temp and I was really cold, so I wore a long-sleeve shirt. Luckily, I also wore a sleeveless top over it (because the long-sleeve is really tight around the middle, if you know what I mean), so I was able to take off the long-sleeve, but it was too late to save the run. I did fine on the 2 easy miles (a little fast on the 2nd mile), and managed to be only just slightly slow on the medium mile (which I had to really work for), but completely failed on the hard mile and had to call it after just a quarter mile and walk home. All future progression runs are being done on rail trails to keep the hills from killing me.

I did end up getting my hard mile in on Saturday evening. I went to the Night Nation Run in St Paul. It was basically a dance party with a side of running (or walking, depending on how many adult beverages you enjoyed beforehand) Since I had driven there, I had to make due with water. The course was a very convoluted thing going around the soccer stadium, with a couple DJ stops along the way (which I skipped, I had enough dancing in the 2.5 hours before the run started)

They handed out full bottles of water (with caps) at the water stop, so that was nice. And I bought myself a double scoop chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream cone after the run, and then I bailed before it got completely dark. The area around the stadium is slightly sketchy and I was by myself. I was super annoyed when I got back to my car, because I had done the safe-driver thing and parked under a light in the lot, but they never turned the bleeping things on! It might not have been full full dark, but it was darn close, and I was creeped out. I won’t be doing this event again, even thought it was kind of fun to just go and have fun.

I was obviously too tired after Saturday night to go out running Sunday morning, and then I just never managed to get out Sunday evening either, so there’s another run missed 😔

But Tuesday was my first day of delayed start for work, so I had plenty of time to do a slightly longer-than-scheduled run on the Katrina Lake Loop and it went pretty well. Except for the mosquitos after 7:30 (who knew they had a set wake-up time?) so now there’s a bottle of bug spray in my run bag so I don’t get eaten next time.

It was a bit hazy from Canadian wildfire smoke, but I couldn’t smell anything, so it was fine.

Thursday’s run was rescheduled to Friday because I was working at my great-aunt’s annual garage sale. I got a gently-used pair of Saucony Cohesions for $5, so that was exciting. But the rescheduled run did not happen because when I rolled over to turn my alarm off at 5:45am, the room was spinning, even with my eyes closed! I figured that was not going to be conducive to running, so I stayed in bed, where I at least couldn’t fall over 😄😄 The dizziness eventually dissipated completely after lunch, but it was too hot to run when I got off work at 2:30, plus I needed to cook food for the garage sale tomorrow (lemon bars, brownies, and chicken bacon ranch pasta salad)—which took almost 3 hours all together.

But I am going to get out for my run tomorrow—a magic mile + 5 easy miles. And then I get to go out to the garage sale! Sunday morning, I might try to get Friday’s skipped run in, if I can fall asleep early enough tomorrow night. I had originally not planned on running Sunday because we’re going to see my cousin’s new house, but I don’t think that will be until the afternoon, and I want to work on getting in the habit of morning runs.

On Monday, I was walking back toward the house when this little guy caught my eye! I’ve never seen a baby chipmunk before, I’m not sure why he was out wandering when his eyes haven’t opened yet. He was very trusting and very very soft. I haven’t seen him since, and I’m hoping that his mama took him home and grounded him until he’s actually ready for the wide world.

27 Days Until: TC Women’s Half

Well, this weekend was up and down as far as training goes. I set a new magic mile PR on Saturday, and then only managed 4/5 of the scheduled miles due to a failure of math. I was doing an out-and-back after the magic mile (and I did a half mile warm-up before that) and instead of turning around at 1.75 out so I could end at my car, I turned back at 1.5 out, and decided to call it at 4 miles and have a half mile cold down, rather than 4.5 at my car because it would just be weird 😆

I will never not enjoy the look of a path curving into the woods

As someone in crop insurance, I can’t help but notice that the corn has been planted and is coming up nicely.

Then I wanted to do the skipped run from Friday on Sunday and just didn’t get going early enough. It was 400m repeats, and that stretch of road has no shade in the morning and I didn’t think it was going to go well.

I also didn’t get going very early today, but I was hoping that it wouldn’t get too hot too soon. That was too much to hope for and it was nearly 80 by the time I finished my 8 miles. But I did finish them, so that was good. I also choked on a gnat (or possibly cottonwood fuzz—there was a lot of both floating around) 😄😄 I did really well in the first half of the run, but kind of fell apart in the second half because it was getting hot. But I did not give up. I have to keep reminding myself when I’m walking “No trudging! Head up, shoulders back.” And it seems to help.

I don’t have a lot of chipmunk pictures because 1) I’ve hardly been home; and 2) the chipmunks are hardly out; and 3) the mosquitos in the park are vicious! I did manage to find Albert and Lily yesterday (they’ve got neighboring territories) but could barely stay out long enough to feed them because the mosquitos were swarming, even with bug spray on.
