In Defense of Hotel Housekeepers

I replied to a previous post, but upon thinking about, the more annoyed I became. (Up On Soapbox) Hotel housekeepers are employees of the hotel, NOT you personal maids. They are allotted only a certain amount of time for each room, ex: stay over-20 min, check out- 30 to 45 min. And are given room assignments with those times figured in. In most hotel, when houskeepers are done with their rooms, they may leave. And in some, they are paid by the room, not the hour.
Do you live out of your suitcase? When little Johnny spills his cereal on the floor do you say, "leave it for the maid, that's what they get paid for" or perhaps if little Janey has an accident on the bed you just cover it up, not strip the bed. As a hotel manager, I have seen things in rooms that are beyond belief, and yet the "guests" expect the housekeeper to clean them up. Garbage on the floor, clothes all over the room, wet towels on the bed, food spilled on the carpet, feces and urine over the toilet, is this how you live at home?
And if housekeepers don't speak English, has any one called Housekeeping and asked for someone to translate their wishes. Also, how many of you would to clean rooms for someone else? Just because we're on vacation, does that mean that good manners are on vacation also. Each time I am on vacation, I telll my housekeeper no housekeeping for at least one day, all I need is the garbage removed and fresh towels. They have always been very appreciative and thank me profusely. Just a thought. (Off Of Soapbox)

What a great post. You are 100% correct. Some people just expect too much of housekeeping. I'm one of those people who straighten up the room (everything off the floor, tidy up the bed, clear bathroom counters, put all used towels in the tub, etc) before heading out. I'm afraid the housekeeping staff will think I'm a slob!!

I make sure the room is neat and picked up, all trash where it belongs, towels where they've asked to be put etc. Housekeeping is not an easy job and I do not want to make more work in my room.
I've walked past some rooms and was appalled at the condition left for housekeeping - either during a stay and esp. the last day. It seems at the end of a stay people leave a huge mess for housekeeping....
Sherrynny, thanks for the idea about asking for clean towels and trash removal only on one day.

A person never realizes how hard the job is until they do it themselves. I did and it almost broke my back and I was only 20 years old at the time. I was allowed no more than 30 minutes per room. This was back when all sheets were changed EVERY day. 16 rooms a day and 2 beds per room is alot of bending over. Not to mention cleaning the tub, etc. yes, I have seen some really gross things. I think if a person can be cautious enough to use a condom, they can consider the housekeeper and not leave it on the floor. :crazy2: I don;t think it takes that much effort to remove the plug from the tub drain. We don;'t want to see your dirty water. Throwing your trash in the trash can is not difficult either. I never expected a tip. it was not customary then and I would not expect one now. What i did expect was a bit of consideration. I agree with the original poster.........asking housekeeping to remove trash and replenish fresh towels is a kind gesture. i appreciated that more than anything when I worked that job. You would not believe the look on the housekeepers face when I stay in a hotel and refuse service. I can make my own bed and take the trash bag out of the can and place my towels in a neat pile by the door. When I check out, I remove sheets and place them in another pile. From one who knows......30 minutes is not enough time to do everything expected. They even checked behind us to see if there were streaks on the mirrors

I agree with you both 100%, I have stayed in a wide range of Disney's hotels, the Poly, GF, Wilderness Lodge (favorite), AKL, POR, Wilderness Cabins, and I will say I have never ever in over my 30 plus times I have stayed inside disney ever had a problem. Then again I do not leave the room for the day as if a hurricane hit the room. I leave the towels where they ask me to if I want fresh towels, I don't leave my luggage all around and in the way. I will admit there are times I leave the table with a small mess of park maps and extra napkins, but they are usually 99.9 % of the time straighten up, but if they are not I don't go and get bent out of shape. I am also the type of Disney fan who enjoys when they do the little towel animals, but I do not get bent out of shape if I do not get one in my room. For me that is something extra and when and if I recieve those little tokens I always leave them a small tip. Like the old saying "You get more with sugar, then you do vinegar." I also travel with young children from time to time, as when I take my nephews, but as mentioned in the other post, its upto the parents or guardians to watch over the little ones and make sure they do not mess up the place to much. You do not let them do it when they are home, why let them do it when on vacation.

I say be kind and respect those who are working so that you may have a good time when in Disney World.

I've never had a bad experience with mousekeeping at Disney. We have three children and I do everything possible to make sure the room isn't hard to clean. We unpack and store suitcases in the closet, I even bring hanging shoe bags from home so that there aren't tons of kids shoes all over the room. We don't leave wet towels anywhere but the bathroom. At GF they have hampers and that is a lifesaver. We never were able to get any towel animals but last year the girl who did our room would rearrange the kids stuffed animals and do things like put dd's minnie ears on her bear. We really appreciated it and tipped very well.

I don't leave a mess in our rooms, but I'm not going to do the housekeepers job either.
I leave all the used towels and washcloths in the bathtub each morning because I want fresh ones.

If I wanted to make beds or take out the trash I'd rent a house offsite. One of the reasons I stay in a hotel is to have someone else do all the things that I do at home each day.

Being on vacation isn't an excuse to be slob. However, I don't think it's wrong to expect someone to do the job they are getting paid to do.

When we were at GF last September I thought a card asked that used towels be left in the hamper ;) Maybe I mis-read the card?

I work in the hotel industry and I have heard of rooms that the guest has "trashed" badly (these are high class guests. I work at a luxury resort). We have had to put that room out for 2 days due to the guests behavior. This is lost $$ for not one night but 2 nights for the hotel.

Majority of our guests behave fine, but you get those 1% of the guests who don't care what condition they leave their hotel room puckerup:.

The housekeeping staff works very hard and for not a good salary:(. They have certain rooms that have to be cleaned that day and it can get very stressful for them to have all of their rooms completed by the end of their shift. So they may start a little early and will accidently knock on a guests door and wake them up. Majority of their guests is out of their rooms before 8am but a few guests sleep in and doesn't get out until mid morning. If the guests knows that they wouldn't be out of the room until a certain time, that guest can call the front desk or housekeeping and let them know what time they can come in to clean their room.

I for one never leave my room looking like a storm blew through and during my stay I make sure I pick up as I do at my own home before I leave for the day but I want my room cleaned every day when I'm on vacation, I don't care what the workload is for each housekeeper.

Living in Las Veags, I too have seen some of the rooms after a highroller has check out and I can tell you first hand, the housekeeper deserves a trip to Hawaii for not going Postal on the guest, but I also know that not every room is left like the pig parade just marched through it.

I respect the housekeeping staff.. I sure wouldn't want the job, the housekeepers have one of the hardest jobs at any resort. They work long hours and have to deal with some very nasty things sometimes but I have had a couple of times at DisneyWorld where the room wasn't as clean as it should be or I should say as clean as it has been on other Disney trips and I'm sorry... that isn't right either.. I don't care what the problem is... that is the job and what they were hired to do.

Great post! It's amazing how far the entitlement mentality reaches sometimes. Yes, they're paid to clean the room, and I've never been disappointed in any of our trips. But I, too, have walked past some rooms that are appalling, and I wouldn't wish that clean up on anyone.

While I don't strip the beds or take out my trash, I leave my hotel room in tip top condition. In fact, I was just at the Bellagio in Las Vegas last weekend and I said to my friend - "the housekeeper must love us - the fastest room clean in town!" LOL!!!

I leave my Hotel Room better than my room at home! ::yes:: I usually travel alone, and only use ONE bed, so the other stays made up. I sometimes even make my bed, and wipe down the sink.

Amen sista! What a great post. And Poohbear - we are the same way - that's why I could never have a house cleaner at my home even if I could afford it, I'd have to clean my house first! I just feel too bad to leave messes for someone else to pick up. So not everone here has that "leave it for the maid" mentality.

I am so glad you made this thread. I truly understand your frustration about the house keeping thing. I never ever, leave a mess for the cleaning crew. Some slobs have no courtesy. Love the thread.

I'm the same way. I certainly would never leave the room in shambles but I'm not going to make my bed or wipe down sinks. I am on vacation after all. I'm paying for some type of service.

I too tidy up the room before going out for the day. I expect the mouskeepers to fix the beds, vacuum, give us new toilettries and towels and empty the trash every day. I am paying for that service in the cost of my room. We have a toddler, and cheerios, raisins, etc. always end up on the floor. I usually try to pick up the bulk of it, but if there are crumbs left behind I want them vacuumed up. The last time we were at WDW, this didn't happen. As for those little note cards asking guests to reuse towels - I refuse to. When I am at home, we reuse bath towels for a few days, so when I am on vacation I want a fresh towel everyday!

Great post! I always tidy up before I leave in the morning (make sure clothes tucked away, nothing left strewn about the floor). I don't actually make the bed or clean up, but I pick up after myself, as I would at home. I also don't ask for fresh towels or fresh linens on a daily basis for environmental reasons, which ends up saving the mousekeepers some time and the hotel some money. I've never had a problem at Disney.

There are always bad employees, but I think the company that makes them turn over so many rooms in such short time can be partly to blame. I remember being in a hotel (non-Disney) where supervisors roamed the halls checking to see the maids' progress. One day I tried to make small talk, and the maid actually looked scared. I ended up whispering to her in Spanish that everything was ok, and I went outside and complimented her to her supervisor, since she had been the housekeeper for my stay and had been very nice to me (I was studying for a multi-day test, and she left me extra candy and extra coffee). God knows what kind of pressure she was under.
