Impatiently waiting for VGT to be assigned

We are 12 days out for our Canada cruise on the Dream. There are still tons of empty staterooms on the ship. A lot of people got their GTY assignments 2 weeks ago. I know they can do it right up until we sail....but I can't stop obsessively checking to see if it's been assigned. Does it take them longer to assign if there are a lot of open staterooms? I would think they would assign earlier in that situation but I guess not.

Around the 1 week mark is what I hear most often. Those who have been assigned already may have had a category GTY, which is always assigned before GT.

Last couple of times my wife and I did a GTY we had our room assigned,I want to think it was about 20 to 30 days out. This was back in April of 2018 and November 2022.

We have sailed VGT 3 times on the fantasy in the last year. Cabin assignment generally came at the 2 week mark - usually on a Tuesday afternoon!

It’s normally around the 2 week mark. I’m on the cruise after you and keep checking too!

Ok so my reservation says "Stateroom GTY". Under details it says "Guaranteed Verahdah Stateroom with Restrictions; Category VGT".

So it references both GTY and VGT??

What's the difference between VGT and GTY?
Category __GTY (for example, 5B GTY) is a regularly-priced booking that is offered when most, but not all, staterooms in a category have been filled. Someone who books GTY will get a cabin in the assigned category or a higher category, but the cabin won't be assigned at time of booking. This category works that same as booking a specific cabin as far as final payment dates, ability to make changes to passengers, and so on.

Category VGT/OGT/IGT is a reduced-priced booking that requires full payment at time of booking and does not permit any changes to stateroom or passengers. Someone who books VGT could get any veranda cabin; OGT could get any oceanview cabin (or veranda); and IGT could get any inside cabin (or oceanview or veranda).

You have Category VGT, which mentions Restrictions, so you have the 2nd type, which does not allow changes and is typically assigned later.

Did you book VGT or something like 4A GTY?

If you booked VGT, you have a VGT stateroom.

If you booked a specific category in GTY status that you didn't have to pay all upfront, you have a category GTY.

ETA: The poster above me explained it better and at the same time. :)

The one time I did VGT, it said this in my reservation:

Category:
VGT
Embark Date:
17-Jan-2022
Stateroom:
GTY
Debark Date:
21-Jan-2022
Description:
Verandah Stateroom with Restrictions

It is unfortunate that they use GTY in both cases, but they are different!

Ok thanks all! I booked VGT with restrictions. It was last minute so we had to PIF when we booked either way. But, it was VGT.

My parents room was just assigned today. Sailing on the Wish October 16

Our room in May wasn’t assigned until less than 48 hours before sail away! But we got an amazing stateroom (category 8B for an OGT). It was nerve racking to wait though. We were already in Barcelona when I finally saw the room in the app (and so checked once an hour or so).

Our TA was told by DCL that it could be that we aren’t assigned a room until boarding. When my TA asked how we would then deal with luggage drop the answer was that the luggage drop has a cruise manifest where they could look up our stateroom. Why they would be able to tell the porters but not us was not explained… :rolleyes1

They can assign your room up to the day of sailing but that scenario is pretty unusual. 7-14 days seems pretty typical with 10 being average. Fingers crossed you get it soon.

A lot of people on the Fantasy Eastern Caribbean cruise in early September of this year didn't get VGT, OGT, and maybe other GTY assignments until about 3 or 4 days from sailing. The curiosity was difficult to deal with!
But we got a great room.

Actually, as long as you received luggage tags in advance that have a bar code there is no need to look up the stateroom number. The bar code will automatically direct your luggage to your stateroom.

As to informing... does DCL send out notification of stateroom assignment? Last I knew it just shows up once day. If the stateroom is assigned "on boarding day" (which as PP says would be rare), it likely occurs before your arrival and simply didn't get updated in your plans in advance. It's all in the computer system -- and whether one system "speaks" to another is, well, Disney IT...

Every time I’ve booked *GT recently (since COVID) I’ve not received luggage tags pre cruise, or at all in some cases. The three cruises I booked an actual stateroom on I did get the tags.

Luggage tags had never arrived.

our TA called 3 days before the cruise and was told that no stateroom was assigned yet.

I believe that they were holding back the nicer oceanview rooms in the hope that some would upgrade at Last moment. It was the first Med cruise of the season and it felt like at least 1/3 of the ship had booked IGT, OGT and VGT.
