my DH had been taking imitrex for over 10 years - until they stopped having any effect on his migraines and we'd be visiting the ER every other weekend for a shot of dilaudin to help with the pain....

now DH is on Depakote (anti-seizure meds) to prevent migraines entirely - he started with one/daily, now he's taking two/daily - hasn't had a migraine in almost 2 months (as compared to having had migraines every other day for almost 10 years)

yes, imitrex was expensive - but luckily it was covered by our insurance

Can I ask how long it took for the migraines to go away completely? I am on Depakote for Tension Migraines and just increased to 2 a day a week ago, just wanted to know how long until I see relief... Thanks

I take Imitrex also. It's the only thing that works for my migraines. I can usually get by with cutting them in half. I found that taking seasick meds (Bonine) help with the nausea when it's bad. (although the Imitrex doesn't cause my nausea, the migraine does).

The only side effect it has on me is I have to go pee all the time. It's like a diuretic for me!

Migraines are just awful. I am sorry there are so many people on here dealing with them. I have had them since I was a teenager.
Thankfully, Imitrex works great for me. No side effects at all.

Oh gee. Sorry for you guys who get migraines. I get terrible sinus headaches & can sympathize with you.

Thanks everyone! I have decided to keep the Imotrex as a last resort and just deal with my migranes as I have for the last 6 years. Yes, thats right, 6 years. I've been to my regular doctor, a chiropractor, a neurologist, had an MRI done of my head, etc and no one knows whats causing them. I have a constant pain, sometimes dull but always there, on the top back part of my head, it feels like there is a tight hat on my head at all times. I'm having another MRI done in 2 weeks so they can compare and see if theres any change.

Suzanne, my migraines are triggered by the nerves at the back of my head, near the bottom. I have constant pain there. I wonder if you could be dealing with something similar. I have what is called "occipital neuralgia," and the surgery I'm having is to implant an occipital nerve stimulator. http://www.wireheading.com/misc/migraine.html

I take Imitrex and 2 Excedrin for migraine. If it's a 3 day migraine I can usually get through with 1 50mg pill that I split in two. I get the tingly feeling sometimes but that's it. When I took the injectible kind I'd feel like I was going to throw up and my head would pound for about 5 minutes and then it would go away.
I did read somewhere that generic sumatriptan is available in the UK and will be availabe in the US sometime this fall or soon thereafter. It's so expensive but totally worth it for me!! But it would be great if generic was available!!
Wondering if the people who take Depakote have trouble with everything tasting salty? My mom hated it and stopped taking it b/c she said she felt like a big walking salt block.

for all those suffering from migraines! I used to get 15+/month as well as other types of headaches so that I had one type or another 28 days/ month. Thankfully, mine pretty much stopped after I had my children.

DD has had a transformed migraine continually since Sept '06. Yes, nearly 2 years! She also had one that lasted from Feb '06 to Jul '06. We've tried just about every drug on the market. She's currently being seen at a headache center in a teaching hospital. These are the first doctors who have prescribed nausea meds whenever she takes her rescuse meds. They told us that nearly all of the drugs will cause stomach problems. She's taking Compazine now whenever she takes the Midrin. It really seems to help.

Her daily pain level is actually lower than it has been since all this started, although she still can't function normally. They've got her on only 1 preventative, Zonagran (sp?), but added Petadolex (butterbur) back at Christmas. It seems to be helping somewhat. At her last visit they also added Riboflavin. I offer the information in case someone wants to read up on either & ask their doctor about them.

I've heard Petadolx works pretty well to help prevent migraines from coming on. My mom and brother both get them. They've figured out their triggers as caffeine and chocolate, so they have to avoid those. For those of you who suffer from migraines and the RX drugs don't help much, or you'd rather not take them, it's worth trying and seeing if it works.I know they sell it at the site where I get my supplements....seacoastvitamins.com
