Back to the drawing board..Like this bill or not we must do something about the crisis at hand.

I'm glad. This bill was not the answer.

I would like to see the borders secured and current laws enforced before anything else.

That's great news! Build the fence, enforce the laws and deport the law breakers. :cheer2:

Good
this bill was awful
for all bushs talk on us being safe he should enforce the borders and laws we have
I know people want to come here for a better life but if they arent legal they shouldnt be here

I still believe that there is too much to lose on both sides of the aisle for us ever to get real reform. The Republicans don't want to take cheap labor away from their big business donators and the Democrats want to keep the Hispanic vote-and maybe get more voters if they are seen as the ones making the illegals legal.

ITA we have all the laws we need already on the books we just aren't enforcing them! enforce the current laws and we would be OK.

Great news! :thumbsup2 This bill was not the answer.

Can someone link to the roll call? TIA

Good. There was far too much public outcry for it to pass.

It would have set a dangerous precendent -- a majority of senators voting directly to oppose what their constituents want. I heard way too many many misguided polititions trying to convince the media that the public was in support of this, yet I know of no one personally who was not opposed to this bill as it is currently written.

Most people support SOME of the ideas in the bill, but there are too many deal-breakers in it.

I agree. It is not black and white. We cannot just "ship them back" when they have children born here unless we change that law too. I also know for a fact that many people are only against this bill because they have deep seated bigotry against hispanics and portray them all as criminals, welfare recipients etc etc. Many work three jobs supporting their families. Some are indeed criminals. On the other side of the coin many communities are going bankrupt supporting too many recent arrivals who don't speak English. A town in PA comes to mind. I don't know the answer but we need to do something to address this but apparently it will die on the floor.

I think the best statement I ever heard was the recent:

"I'll bet the Native American's had wished they had tougher immigration Laws"

:goodvibes

I haven't seen or heard any bigotry from those expressing discontent with this bill. Most of the hispanics I run around with were against the bill.

I'm not saying there isn't bigotry. I've been stopped and asked to show a green card once when driving through the South Western US. I guess my little Pontiac 1000 packed to the brim, on my way to my first job after college looked suspicious!
My brother was stopped frequently when working construction in southern California.

But they didn't and you see what happened. Let THAT be a lesson to us as well. ;)

I think this may be the one and only issue where I agree with the hardline Republicans. I found myself agreeing with DawnCt1's posting on the topic the other day and nearly fainted! :rotfl:

A nation that can't control its borders can't control its own security. I'm not referring to terrorism only (because God knows, we've got our own home-grown nuts) but economic security as well. People here illegally should be deported. Yes, I know, some have kids. The kids can stay, but the parents have to go - they knew sneaking into the country is wrong, and knew that having a child here was not a claim to residency.

We need to make an example of some big employers who hire illegal aliens. I don't mean fine them, I mean drag the CEO off to the pokey in handcuffs, preferrably on time for the evening news.

We need to allow municipalities to enforce residency laws. If you can't prove you belong here, you can't rent an apartment or buy a home. Foreigners on valid visas will still be able to do so.

If you get caught forging US ID documents, you should be jailed. If you get caught accepting obviously forged US ID documents, you should be jailed.

If people feel the need to allow more legal immigration, fine, let's do that, but this bill or any bill that creates an amnesty for those here illegally should be defeated.

:thumbsup2 That was quite intuitive.

Hey Dawn.... :wave2:

How ya doin' buddy? I got a stalker :tiptoe: the last time I posted something postive one of your posts.:lmao: It was getting so ugly.... I was going to call in my BIL.... (Pathfinder, Ranger, Special Forces) thought might be over kill.
Considered contacting a buddie in the FBI to sign up for witness protection.
But that would be so disruptive to my life. My final option is to contact Rosie's body guards. I hear on the boards she doesn't use them anymore.
:lmao:

Don't feel bad. I got a really nasty PM. Someone wrote something "mean" about me in Spanish and they didn't like that I didn't care what they thought! :rotfl2: I guess they thought that I couldn't read! ;) My DB is also in SF. Leaving for Afghanistan next month...again.

It wasnt a great bill ,but I have to agree something needs to be done. For those saying just follow the current laws, secure the border, etc., funding for those projects need to be secured. Some sort of bill addressing it needs to be passed, you can't just say hurrah! we won! We are right back where we started.
