My family is going to SIL for dinner. I wanted to make and imitation crabmeat dip. My husband who likes this dip says I should not make it. He thinks the imitation stuff is beneath his sisters. Should I make it? Should I buy real crabmeat?

I haven't made real crab dip, but I do like the imitation. I mix the "Krab" meat with cream cheese, and cajun (no salt) spice mix until mixed thoroughly. There is nothing wrong with the imitation, but if someone is paying attention, there is a big difference in the texture between the real thing and the imitation. The real thing is kind of "stringy" while the imitation is more chunky.

Whew, sounds like you have a tough crowd to please. I would never expect that something I took to a family get together would be thought of in that way...

Good luck

I agree with hrh_disney_queen, but I like adding a little green scallion to my dip and cutting up the imitation crabmeat so it is fine. I also add parmesan cheese and a little milk to blend it easier. This is delicious heated as well.

I don't like real crabmeat in the recipe as well.

Here's an easy recipe to take, if you want real seafood:

tiny shrimp, cocktail sauce and cream cheese.
Put 8oz of cream cheese in a pretty pie plate. Microwave for like 30 sec to get soft. Spread over the dish bottom. Put cocktail sauce on top and then the shrimp. Serve with crackers.

Maybe that will serve the "real" seafood problem and your need for a seafood dip.

Good Luck! I know how hard it is to please others.

thanks for your responses. I will probable make it. My sister and her family are coming. Since she is the mother of six I know she loves anything she does'nt have to make.

Well I made a hot crabmeat dip. Guess what my sil made a cold crabmeat dip. ( the imitation kind) Oh yeah, made an Amaretto cake that Kim&Chris posted on favorite cake recipe thread. That was well received by all. Thanks Kim&Chris.
