I'm speechless - DH wants to buy into DVC!

I posted here a couple of months ago trying to figure out how DVC works and you all were SO helpful. I've done reading on DVC but never even really mentioned it to my sensible DH b/c I didn't think he'd even really consider it.

Well. We just got back yesterday from our annual trip to DLR. DH stopped buy the DVC info booth on his own initiative and signed up for and attended an open house! By himself while I watched the kids! I am truly truly shocked.

So now he is extremely interested in DVC but of course being cautious wants to give it some serious thought over the next few months. He wants me to do more research and due diligence since that's my role in our family.

****Here's the catch:*** Imagine my dismay when over the past 24 hours my research has led me to believe that DVC really really does not make sense for a family who wants to travel regularly to DLR. :sad1: Please, please someone tell me I'm wrong!

Here are our travel habits:
- DLR once per year for 5-6 nights in late April or early May (non spring break time). We are willing to settle for a nice offsite hotel at a nice price but MUCH prefer to stay onsite.

- We have food allergies and don't love DLR food so we like having a fridge and preferably a microwave (thus we'd love a villa).

- We do see ourselves traveling instead to WDW every 2-3 years for 8-12 days or so. Esp since our kids get older and more tolerant of longer flights (we're West coasters.)

- We also see ourselves maybe going to either resort once in awhile during early January.

- We like travelling with extended family and friends.

- Finally, we love beach vacations too and would like to occasionally use some points to go elsewhere.

Basically we are drawn to the supposed flexibility of DVC and we are huge fans of Disney vacations. We want to prepay and force ourselves to take a really nice vacation once per year with the occasional long weekend at DLR. There is emotional value for us in basically having a vacation already "paid for" and not having to pay large hotel costs out of our bank account. Does that make sense? We will take nice annual vacations no matter what anyway.

Anyway, I've been reading and first off, am realizing that buying in at a home resort in WDW that we will rarely visit only to use the points at the DLR hotels might not be the best option. That was DH's plan. Also, it seems that GCV is unlikely to be available to non-DVC members. But that if we bought at say SSR to gain access to GCV we'd still have to add on like 180 points there in addition to actually be successful in booking a week there every spring. Or could we get away with a smaller GCV add on?

So sorry to ramble but would any of you see DVC as a good option in my case. It is soooo appealing to a novice like me and my DH is open to buying (we can pay cash). How can I resist??? Please help me resist if this is not a good value in our case!

Thank you for reading and for any sage wisdom you DVC vets can offer! :worship: :worship: :worship:

One option would be to buy into DVC on a resale rather than through Disney, so you only buy enough points to go every 2nd or 3rd year (using banking and borrowing). Then as an owner, you can add on any amount of points later. The only catch might be being able to buy into the GVC resort. That one is looking like it will go to owners who bought through californina first (and might sell out before going to anyone else).
-If you really really want GCV, then the other option would be to buy the required 160 points directly through Disney at DLR so that you have the option to add on at GCV. Then grab the points you need when the GCV sales window opens. Then you can sell your original 160 point contract keeping the GCV one. At that point you can determine if you need to add on at a WDW resort to cover the points for that trip every 2-3 years or if you have enough from GCV to cover it. Will that scenario cost you some $ to do, yes since you resale will be less than you paid Disney for originally, but it gets you where you want to be in the long run and if you get a years worth of developers points thrown in, it might end up being a wash.

Thank you thepops! You have a way with words and with providing clarity. I will read your response a couple more times and then show my DH. This stuff is making me go cross-eyed! ;)

Edit: What exactly do you mean by "owners who bought through california first?" I am truly a novice!

Edited again: I don't think you can buy DVC at DLR at all right now . . . is that correct? Or do you just mean processing a DVC purchase through DLR?

I'll jump in real quick. Yes, you can buy at DLR and those who have been are considering Founding members for GCV and will apparently have first shot at the points for there. If you need I can get you a guides name for DLR that you can talk to.

I'd encourage you to look at enough points to cover your WDW trips every other year or every third year. You can add on more if you decide you need to use those points to go to the beach. Buy them through California if you can, then you get the preference for buying GCV.

We do an every other year WDW vacation with our 150 points, and its easy to use them up when you like to travel with family and friends.

That makes complete sense.

Also, it seems that GCV is unlikely to be available to non-DVC members.

In all honestly, it could go either way. In Disney's optomistic plans, it will sell out before getting to the general public. But they have a lot of points to sell. We'll see. One thing I do feel confident of - if GCV sells out lighting quick to memebers, Disney will build more DVC units at DLR.

This is our primary reason for DVC (besides loving Disney) so totally agree with this.

To work this through:
1. Like a PP said, buy resale. If it doesn't matter which WDW DVC you stay at, OKW has the biggest rooms and some of the lowest points per night or if you are a family of 5, AKL. Figure out how many points it would take to stay for 8 - 12 nites. You can "bank"/"borrow" points so you won't need those points every year...so you can buy less than that amount resale.

2. Because you already own a DVC, you can hope like we are, there will points left for non Founding (folks who bought DVC at WDW or bought DVC at DLR early on) people to buy before it goes on sale to non DVC members.

We thought of getting our points this way, BUT we wanted a home resort at WDW because our extended family loves Disney also. So between needing points to take extended family and incentives, we bought SSR through DVC DLR. (But not Founding members:sad1: )

I think there will points left to buy at GCV. pixiedust:

If GCV sells out prior to being available to general DVC membership, I'll take everyone above me on this thread to lunch! ;)

To the OP: if you want to travel regularly to DLR, then wait a few more months and save your money and be ready to pounce once GCV is for sale.

Thanks Mtnman. After researching this much of the day (we just got back from DLR last night and I'm still on vacation and in a Disney mood!), I am thinking that your approach sounds like the wisest for our situation.

If it doesn't work out it doesn't work out. I think I'll call the guide DH met with and get on some sort of GCV notification list. Maybe if we're willing to plunk down the funds for 160-180 points on the first day we might be able to get in on a deal even if we're not existing DVC members.

The more i think about it I just cannot see plunking down that kind of money for a WDW home resort when we've never even been to WDW. Our hearts are just really at DLR. :lovestruc And I really love the short plane ride and the fact that everything is within short walking distance. And the incredible themeing and Walt's influence. And the weather. And California in general.

OTOH, WDW is a lot cheaper overall to visit and so I wonder a bit if that wouldnt' be a better long term destination/investment for our family as far as value. But then you guys say "buy where you want to stay" and for us that's DLR.

Still thinking - I'll run this by DH. It is REALLY heard not to jump on this opportunity and shout "yes!" right away. My DH is a tough sell usually and he's still under the influence of Disney magic! :wizard:

AWWW, thanks but I'll take the points over lunch :goodvibes

Now if they will just get the GCV points schedule to us...
