I'm sorry, but I have to ask...

Before I ask my question, I would like to say something to the Mods: please don't just ban me, just delete this thread...

I've had a LOT of podcast listening to catch up on, & I'm just listening to episode #125 (Jan 12/09). I've also been away from the boards for a while. (2 people, 2 computers, 1 modem....do the math - although we now have a router, so I'm back.)

The "new" policy about politics/religion doesn't really surprise me, considering some of the spew that was thrown around, but I'm a bit confused, considering the rants Pete "occasionally" has on the podcast.

How is politics OK on the Podcast, but verboten on the boards?

I've listened to every single podcast and it is extremely rare that politics are discussed...your reference in fact is about the only one I can think of off the top of my head. Your post makes it seem like it's a weekly topic. It isn't.

And really I have to say....even if politics were a regular part of the podcast, since Pete runs, owns, operates and pays for the running and maintenance of the DIS and the boards, basically he can make any rule he wants. He could make a rule that no discussions about the Magic Kingdom are allowed, yes, I would think that was totally ridiculous, but I'm not the one running the place. Personally, I appreciate the fact that politics aren't part of the podcast, but I also know that's because it's Pete's choice not to do so and very occasionally he might not be able to contain himself. ;)

There are many double standards. When it is your ball, you can take it and go home when ever you would like.

Pete's board, Pete's rules. :thumbsup2

On the rare occasion that politics was introduced into the podcast (and it's an EXTREMELY rare occasion), there was no rule forbidding it on the boards at the time. Honestly, there was only one occasion that I can recall where a discussion on the show got political - I apologized for it the following week and promised not to introduce it into the show again. As far as I know, that's a promise that I've kept.

There are many double standards.

Such as?

Time for my "mom voice".
This is the happy boards. If you can't say anything nice...

Indeed, it would be very one sided since one person gets to make and break rules as they see fit. Or can edit and ban the other. Something a lot of people forget... this is not a public forum.

Those are great 'general' statements of accusation - why not back them up with examples?

Exactly! These are DISNEY DISCUSSION BOARDS!!!!!!

If you want to talk politics, there are PLENTY of other places online to go and get yourself in a tizzy. Here we discuss Disney (and perhaps the odd pie or cake)

Have there been more debate threads about D23 or the politics banning policy? I believe that the politics on the podcast question was asked and answered in other threads that the wonderful new forum search tools can find.

I only remember one or two discussions of politics on the podcast and they were also Disney related. The boards (well, mostly the community board) are a much better place with the new policy.

Kudos for the great new search tool. Man I'm glad BoardTracker is gone!!

I think earlier this week, DISers over on the Budget Board were suggesting that not allowing money to change hands for swaps/shares on the Budget Board, but allowing money to change hands for sale of DVC points on the DVC boad was a double standard.

Maybe so, but from what I understand, problems with DVC rentals are very, very few and far between and from reading the Budget board this is not the case with the swaps and shares. Since there are ALOT more people involved in those it naturally lends itself to more problems and issues, which requires more policing by Pete's volunteer moderators. I have no idea if this is the case, but maybe the moderators told Pete they had become too much and gotten to hard to deal with? Whatever the reason, I don't think the decision was arbitrary and not for nothing.

The bottom line is that members of the DIS enjoy everything it has to offer with none of the responsibility. Any one of us can leave the DIS tomorrow and not give it another thought. It is not our responsibility and it is not our livelihood. To me this severely limits any say so anyone may think we have as to how it is us and what rules are made. Of course we may not like some of the rules and there is nothing wrong with expressing that, but to say Pete has no right to makes the rules is ridiculous. While the DIS certainly means alot to many of us, none of us share in any of the risk or responsibility. And so I have to trust that the decisions Pete makes, popular or not, are based on what he feels is best for his business. Afterall, he has the most to gain AND the most to lose.
