I have been planning my disney vacation for 2 years....All set to go this November. Just found out that my sister has cancer and needs to have surgery making my disney vacation impossible for when I planned it. My friend said that she will lose her points because she has already made the reservation for us....but not to worry about it. My sister should be just fine...which is the important thing, but now I feel terrible because I screwed up my friend's points for the year. Is there any way she can be credited back? Can I get a doctor's note explaining the problem so she doesn't lose points? I just feel sick about the whole thing. Can this be rescheduled without penalty? Anyone have any input? Help please....

First of all, hoping your sister will be fine.
Regarding your friend's points, it is difficult to answer your question without knowing more about what month your friend's points are credited each year and whether your friend used banked, current or borrowed points. The best plan would be for your friend to call Member Services immediately to see what the options are. If all else fails she still may be able to rent her reservation to someone else.

Could your friend rent the reservation? List it on the rent/trade board, and see if anybody can use the reservation. Depending on use-year, it's possible that the points can be rented and a variation of the reservation can be done. All is not lost until the use-year is up.

BTW . . . praying for your sister's health, and for your peace.

I agree with Jean...try to find out more about the points.

Since we're more than 31 days out (you said trip is in November) there may be some flexibility. If they are December Use Year points there won't be much flexibility. But any other UY should give you some time to reschedule--at least thru 1/31 since there is no January Use Year.

Trip Insurance would normally cover some losses, but probably not in the case of a cancellation more than 30 days out. Insurance is normally designed to cover last minute cancellations which result in an actual loss.

Good luck and God bless.

Thank you for your responses....I'll have my friend call tomorrow and see what can happen. She said that she borrowed some points from her next years pool...I just don't want her to be out anything....and thank you everyone for the well wishes for my sister!:goodvibes

Wonderful that you will be by your sisters side through her cancer.

You sound like a very devoted sister...I wish your family the best!!!!!!!!:flower3: :flower3: :flower3: :flower3: :flower3:

Just want to add my best wishes for your sister. I've been through it with 2 of my own and know how stressful it is even if the prognosis is good.

Hope that you are able to enjoy Disney at some future date.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery for your sister.
I am new to DVC but I understood that if the trip was over 30 days out that the points, even if they are borrowed from a future year, could be rebanked in a holding account. I hope that is correct as my son in law is in the army and at times leave is cancelled.

Me, too.

I'm celebrating 5 years of my sister being cancer free next month with her.

I've passed along everyone's well wishes! Thank you all so much. I found out today that my friend won't lose points as long as we re-book by end of February. I've never been to Disney in February but we are now scheduled to give OKW a try 2/1 to 2/7. Thanks again!:goodvibes

If you cancel at 30 or less days prior to arrival, points go into holding status. That means that they can only be used for reservations booked 60 days or less prior to arrival at the resort.

They can not be banked, and expire at the end of the use year. Any borrowed points can not be re-banked as banking and borrowing are final transactions. All the points in the reservation would be gone at the end of the use year.

If canceled at least 31 days prior to arrival, points go into the current use year, but borrowed points can not be "unborrowed." They remain in the use year of the reservation.

i know that i heard somewhere (maybe from my guide) that MS can make special exceptions with reservations in the event of a terrible unforseen event such as yours. can't hurt to let MS know what's going. thinking good thoughts for your family :goodvibes
