Im so over this Ice Bucket Challenge

Clearly, some answers are good enough for her and some are not. And if the answer is not good enough, the person will be categorized as high and mighty, on their high horse, hypocritical......maybe worse. With that attitude, is it any wonder people are hesitant to offer reasons why they declined the challenge?

Even if this WAS the case, who cares what Mkrop's opinion would be? She's simply just wondering why. The hypercritical part was towards her brother's reply and his posting of something else that was SIMILAR to this but yet he felt this was not worthy of his time or efforts. Again, so what?

The minute this becomes judgmental and people get criticized for choosing not to participate, the challenge will begin to lose its effectiveness. It will leave a bad taste in people's mouths. And that will likely hurt future fundraising efforts for ALS and other worthy causes.

Pure speculation and your opinion. Perhaps several will agree and see it this way, but I know for sure not all will (I wouldn't). Mainly because I typically don't care what one thinks of or about me. I'm not here to make everyone happy.

Oh please and all the criticisms coming the other way wont hurt it either,it will, why do those against the challenge need to be so critical as well. Why cant they just ride the wave on all this and not pass judgement. Dopey Dame spelled it out, those are the high and mightys I was referring to. Just like other things on FB and Twitter if I dont want to be a part of I just scroll past, ignore or POLITELY decline. I dont jump on my high horse at other people's ideas and look down on them. Like I dont/didnt get the cryptic posts about bra color and hearts on the wall to help breast cancer. I just decline or ignore. But I did not start a thread about it nor did I put others down on their FB pages or go on news outlets and post that it is the stupidest idea ever (which I dont think it is, I just dont get it) I let people do their thing.

I totally agree, if you don't want to do it then just don't, ??? bullied? extorted ?? c'mon ... I see this no different than the Salvation Army ringing their bells and staring you down at Christmas time saying Happy Holidays as you enter/exit stores or Sarah McLaughlin's animal cruelty commercial..which by the way is heart wrenching. I feel it's a way to help gain public awareness. I do agree it is now getting "annoying" to say the least but I simply stopped watching the videos of the challenge. I just don't get all the harsh feelings towards it. ..well that' my opinion anyway.

First off, there's this: "If you don't complete the mission on time and nominate others, you're expected to donate $100 to the ALS Association." I'm sorry, but who told me I'm EXPECTED to do anything?? Maybe some of us don't have $100 to donate. Maybe some of us live paycheck to paycheck. So, some random person says "dump water over your head or give me $100 dollars"..how is this okay with everyone? Because it's going to a good cause? Well, sorry, but I just don't like being threatened.

Secondly, there is no reason to waste water. Nobody is donating money on my behalf, so it's just a random waste. People say it's to raise awareness? How about I just post on my Facebook, "please donate to the ALS Association." How is that any different? I understand the appeal with celebrities who have followers all over the world...but there is NO reason for me or my fiancee or any of you to follow suit and dump buckets of water on your head. Especially when there are countries out there that don't have clean water.

Yes, Mkrop said some people who have chosen not to do the challenge act like they're on their high horse or are hypocritical - she never said that everyone who chose not to participate was.

And yes, she also asked if anyone could share their reasons for not wanting to do it. Since when does asking a question like that - on of all things a DISCUSSION board - offensive? The answer is, it doesn't, unless you are looking for something to be offended by, which is exactly how your posts come across.

1. Its merely just a "challenge" that can be declined (for whatever reason....or NO reason)....

2. There are steps that can be taken to not "waste" the water but if #1 applies, there's no reason to get into this one.

I posted earlier on the thread but decided to step back for a bit since some of the comments about being being bullied, extorted, threatened were getting to me. Having a personal connection to ALS having lost my mom to it, the cause is important to me and I am glad to see the awareness and money being raised just as there are many causes that has a personal connection to others. I could not imagine putting down fundraising for a cause just because no one in my circle has it. Bottom line, do what you want. If you want to do the challenge, do it. If you don't don"t. If you don't want to see the videos, just scroll. No one is bullying or "extorting" to into doing it.

I don't need to be personally affected by this death sentence with no cure and thus far minimal treatment to slow it's progression to have compassion and look at the positive effect this challenge has had across the nation to raise awareness and money to fight this debilitating disease. Yes, I "chose" to accept this challenge and dumped a bucket of Ice water on my head and I also made a donation. Hats off to all the people who participated and donated. Respect and love to those who quietly declined. To those who found necessary to debate and complain and make a mockery of such a wonderfully kind hearted movement that started out with the very best of intentions and at the end of the day was a brilliantly huge success (whether everyone did it correctly or not)..... in the world we live in today, surely you can find something that is actually "negative" to be negative about... I encourage you to watch....

Thank you for posting this both these words and the video. I think it sums up perfectly what needs to be said and the video is both inspiring and heartbreaking.

#2 Hyperbole again, there are plenty of enivronmentally friendly ways to do this challenge, and the waste of this small amt of water will not affect those other countries, donations, education and people going there to help will.

And most people who claim to be living paycheck to paycheck are not, and if your friends nominated you they might know that. But I am sure if people really wanted to donate they could offer up a Starbucks or something if the cause was important. We all have things in our life that we can offer up if we so choose.

Look, I'm not even going to address whether or not her reasons are "valid." They are HER reasons. They will make sense to one person but not to the next. There is no master list of what is an acceptable reason. For whatever reason this rubs her the wrong way so she isn't participating.

But a 3 point post as to why she is WRONG will probably just reinforce any negative feeling the challenge has generated in her. And that may spread so that she doesn't feel compelled to donate to ALS research in the future. Considering ALS has touched our family and caused great pain, I want donations to keep pouring in.

Asking why someone doesn't want to participate and then criticizing/name calling them because of their reply is not just idle curiosity. It goes well beyond that.

Well, then I may be in trouble, because I have not watched a single one on FB, and have no idea if anyone challenged me. Honestly, no one can make you spend you money, and no one really expects that you have to. I can tell you no one who knows me would believe I would accept the challenge, and God bless them if they did LOL!

Truthfully, did you hear much about this disease prior to the FB challenges? Probably not, unless you had family who were affected. The challenges have done way more that=n bring awareness to a disease that many have not even heard of, so in my humble opinion, the campaign is successful. If people choose to be offended, upset, or in any other way personally Peevish, they are taking the thing entirely too seriously. For goodness sake, it is easy to ignore, just as I have done.

I just watched the video for the first time today when I got home from work and it only made me happier that I had just completed the challenge with my husband and made our donation to ALS research.

AMEN! Had a PR firm come up with the idea it never would have worked. But this started from a wonderful place and with the very best of intentions. My family is not affected by ALS, right now. But that isn't to say it won't be in the future. Either way this "silly challenge" is making people aware and raising a ton of money for research. That is a great thing no matter how you look at it.

I didnt call anyone names, I said that they were using hyperbole which has been proven in this thread. No one "threatened" this individual, it is up to them to accept, so therefore using the word threatend or bullied or extorted is hyperbole.

So is the enviornmantal angle is hyperbole, as once again has been pointed out throughout this thread. No one is wasting water...it is called the water cycle. and there are plenty of ways to the challenge it one truly wanted to without it being environmentally wrong.

But if you want to say I am calling people names then so be it I cant stop you.

I came back here to post that my wonderful, self proclaimed "hippy granola whackjob environmentalist" (her words to describe herself) cousin in law, demostrated the perfect way to do the challenge and stay true to her ways. She saved her shower water in a bucket, she poured some of that water in some ice pop trays and a ice cube tray, froze those. Then added those to the collected shower water and then dumped on herself near her flowers that she was going to water anyway. Voila! Challenge accepted and done and she helped the environment!
