Im so over this Ice Bucket Challenge

I think it's kind of cute. I mean, either way, you raise money. Seems better to me than posting your bra color or shoe size.

I first heard this existed when Roger Goodell did it lat week.

From what I understand, donations are up a staggering number compared to last year. So, seems like a good thing to me.

I happened to get this challenge during a hot flash so I was quite happy to try it. Ladies….it was perfect. So much that I think I need to carry a bucket of water and a change of clothes where ever I go just to combat those flashes.

I laughed so much I was not able to issue the challenge. I did in a subsequent post to challenge other Coast Guard wives. Our husbands jump in the water routinely to save people. Not ONE took me up on it. There is a word I would use but you all know it…...:rotfl2:

I was wearing my husbands Coast Guard tee shirt to further the message.

I was never into it so there isn't anything to get over. If someone wants to give to charity than just give. Don't bully others into doing the same. We all have causes near to dear to our hearts. I don't go around trying to make others feel guilty for not giving to my causes, please grant me the same consideration.

There are many terminal diseases much less known and funded than als. Will they be championed as well?

Bully? You know the reanimated corpse of Lou Gehrig doesn't show up at your house demanding money if you don't donate, right?

Don't bully others into doing the same.

Bully? I never felt that one single bit. It was a challenge. It was FUN.

Therefore I challenge you Poohforyou to look up the difference between challenge and bullying. :rotfl2:

I really with people would lighten up just a little bit.

I seriously can't believe some of the comments on this thread. What is the matter with some of you people??

Extortion? Bullying? I know common sense (and decency) are clearly lacking here, but just how would someone know what amount of money you did or did not donate in the privacy of your home.

Kudos to the people that see the "challenge" for what it is, and especially to the ones that have donated. ALS is a horrible terrible disease, and I cannot for the life of me understand how someone could be against any fundraising or anything that raises awareness

Tweeted about this earlier today: Hey, Folks Whining About ALS Videos! What bugs you more: awareness being raised for the disease, or how watching them is 100% optional?

I have never really understood how someone could be bothered by something that they don't want to look at if they don't have to look at it. Granted, you might have to scroll through your FB feed a bit, but is that really a big deal?

Some of my friends were complaining about parents posting "First Day of School" pictures of their kids on FB. They said they weren't interested in seeing all of those pictures and it was such a bother to have to scroll past them. Really? What exactly is FB for if not for sharing things you find awesome in your life with your friends and family? :confused3

Agreed x100000

Bully, extortion and shaming are not words that should be used here. My 6 year old did it and my youngest wants to as well. How is it a bad thing??? And I donated as well, and will again if we get challenged.

As one who held the hand of a coworker(she didn't want the family in the room) when they took her off the ventilator after years of suffering with ALS, whatever brings attention and funds to this horrible disease is a good thing.

Don't want to watch them, then don't..and pray that you never encounter this disease in your family. It's heartbreaking.

I did three volunteer "jobs" today including two that were outside my comfort level. And still, I'm really hoping that nobody "challenges" me with this. I think its great that its working out, and I won't complain about it. But I would feel pushed into it - ignoring it feels wrong and so does politely declining it. I like to have better choices. Maybe its a personality thing, but I really wouldn't like this on a personal level.

I don't know if it's caught on around here or not, but most of the people I know have never heard of it. When told about how it works, all have said no way would they dump a bucket of ice over their heads. The only local challenge I've seen was a couple of TV news people doing the challenge in the station parking lot, with cold water instead of ice.

It seems kinda silly to me, but then I detest getting wet with my clothes on. Those who want to, go right ahead and enjoy your moment of attention -- it's not hurting anybody.

Over the weekend I read that ALS has received 11 Million dollars because of this challenge. The Boston College Alumni started it to honor a former Baseball player for the school who is now in a wheelchair because of the disease. We in NY might have increased awareness, since Lou Gehrig had the disease, and many people formerly called ALS "Lou Gehrig Disease".

If you are not interested in this particular disease, please don't knock the people trying to help others. Just do what you want to do, or ignore it.

That's so awesome! I'm so glad this got folks to donate! Yay! :thumbsup2

My wife did it and challenged me. I am the assistant head coach of a high school varsity soccer team. Tomorrow at practice, my players will see me do it and challenge all the other coaches at my school, as well as members of my family. We will then write the checks to ALS for an unspecified amount. If no one else does it, no big. But the breast cancer thing really gets me, especially with high school athletes. They do not know why they are doing it, except they are bombarded with it during October pro and college football games. And very little (almost none) of the pink dollars go to researching how to end breast cancer, yet we (society) continue to fork out dollars for pink during October.

ALS is a little known disease on which there is limited information about due to the difficulty in diagnosing it. By the time it is diagnosed, it is far too late. There is no cure for this disease, but many cancers are routinely being cured now and Americans still donate huge amounts of money to these organizations. Any thing that increases awareness and brings in money is a good thing.

Remember, we are only a little over two weeks away from the biggest and oldest heart string-wrenching bombardment for donations to support Muscular Dystrophy. It is unavoidable....they have been challenging and "calling out" friends, competitors and family for generations. No one seems to take offense to that.

I really had no idea what this was till yesterday when I took the rare monthly plunge to my FB wall. Seems to me anyone who has a problem with this actually has a FB problem. My feed was cluttered with people doing this. Good for them, raise that money, but really this doesn't affect me at all as long as I continue to interact with my friends face-to-face rather than on Facebook.

Some of us are multitalented-we can spend time on Facebook and still interact with people face to face.

Seriously, people are ANNOYED at others raising awareness and money for an absolutely awful disease?! Having seen a customer, who was an absolutely gorgeous woman, fight against this disease for years before dying a painful death from it, and the impact it had on her amazing husband and daughter, I am disgusted that people would complain about having to scroll past a few videos on Facebook.

It is just starting to catch on in Australia; a lot of football (as in Aussie Rules) executives and players have done it after it was announced that a former coach of one a team has been diagnosed, and a popular breakfast TV host did it live too. $10,000 has reportedly been donated in the last week, which is 10x more than normal for this time of year (as charity donations are tax deductible they tend to slow down a lot after people do their taxes in June/July). There are two factors that I think might stop it from becoming as popular here: firstly, it is winter; and secondly, ALS is known in Australia as Motor Neuron Disease, meaning people are even less likely to have heard of ALS and might also struggle to find where to donate.

I would ignore it if someone called me out. Just like I ignore requests from other charities if I choose not to participate. I certainly do not begrudge anyone else from participating or bringing attention to a terrible disease that had vey little support prior to this challenge.

I think that it is very easy to move past a post on FB if you don't have any interest, and I think it is not hard to simply ignore any challenge. I do not understand why folks get their bloomers in a bunch over this.

Because it gives some people something to do. :lmao:

Yup! And, since I am sadly lacking the ability to teleport to my family and friends who live far away, FB is a great way to share our lives without being able to be face to face...including seeing my nephew do the ice bucket challenge.

Frankly, I don't understand negative sentiments regarding this. This challenge was a stroke of genius that has increased giving by what would have seemed an impossible amount.

Usually tragedies prompt big bumps in giving so to me it's fun to see people giving with laughs instead of tears.

Oh and I got challenged last night, I would have elected to only give but it was my sweet fun loving niece who issued the challenge so I'll be the fun aunt and do both. The video will make her happy.
