I'm so out of the loop on today's things

I was watching a segment on the Today show about the amount of tourists going to some little town in Washington state where the Twilight series takes place.

I've never read or seen the movies. I don't keep up with the other populare vampire series either.

I don't twitter, though I've been tweeted about. Never thought I'd say that
I don't have a face book or myspace page or own website. Just call or email or even text message.

I do text message but spell out all the words because I can't speak text message language.

I think I'm getting old but I just don't have the need to follow all these things. Heck I do good to figure out my new IPOD that can hold thousands of songs and movies and whatever else.

Anyone else out of the loop with me?

I am about as out of the loop as you are! I have read the books becuase a friend spent an outrageous sum to mail them to me so I felt I had to read them--I could hardly get through the first two but the last two were okay as fluff. I do also (with the family) have a website only becuase it is too much to email all the stories about moving to all our friends and family, but I have never sent a text message, don't really even understand the whole twitter thing, don't generally know what is playing in theatres (like I did not realize they made movies of those god awful books), etc.
I am sure there are plenty of us out there It does make you feel old though, doesn't it?

I do happen to know Twilight because my DD loves it, otherwise, I would be clueless.

I don't tweet though. I do Facebook and that's about it but I'm not on there all the time or anything (don't play the games). Again, it's all my DD's doing, her school has a lot of things on Facebook, therefore before I let her have an account, I had to get one. Otherwise, I probably still wouldn't have one.

I don't have an IPOD, my kids still have Gameboy Advanced. Although, DD does have an IPOD & DH was given a really old one. Neither one of them do videos of any sort.

Hey you are on the DIS though, so you aren't totally out of the loop. It's how I find out about 1/2 my news...someone will post about something & then I go to the news sites/turn on the TV to find out what is going on.

I don't know text language either. I will use numbers like 2day and 4 u when I text my hubby but that is about it.
I did read Twilight but I think I started late I just read them last April.

Don't feel bad about the books.
Nora Roberts wrote a much better tri-ology on the same subject,
but her books barely got noticed.
Those twi-light books are for ages 17-24 yr old girls, not that I am saying you are old, if it wasn't this, it would be something else that caught this age groups attention.

Don't worry about twittering, facebook or texting. It is just another obsession people have-sort of like our obsession on the DIS Just imagine how much time it would take out of your day. And it drives me nuts watching people on their cell phones, texting, etc., They all look like these tiny mice, holding their cell phones in front of them and moving their hands, just like mice do,, no offense to Mickey Mouse.

FWIW, the sycophantic behavior of some Twilight fans (particularly the adults) is just bizarre to me. Kudos to the SMeyer for touching a chord in these people I suppose, but IMO it's a bit out of hand.

I also got into a bit of a snit with my younger sister about Facebook. She doesn't understand my reservations about starting an account. Frankly I don't WANT people from my past knowing ANYTHING about me. Particularly my ex. My sister thinks I'm being foolish and that my ex has moved on. Sure, it's been 9 years since I last saw/spoke to him, but that last conversation was him threatening to kill me.

That would be my thinking...it is somewhat like that for Facebook. I could see my tweets -- got up, took kids to school, picked kids up from school, went to bed -- and just put that on a continous loop or something.

I hear you loud and clear. The only time I'm in the loop is when my kids decide to let me in and share a bit. I think the loop is designed to keep adults out. I have to be honest, nothing went uncool faster when I was a kid than watching one of my DF's Mom's try to duplicate the trend. I refuse to be one of those Mom's and will allow the world to twitter around me while I age with dignity instead Besides, the one thing kids can't pull off is sophistication

My DD went to a Twilight sleepover and all the girls scrawled 'I love ----' all over their pillows. It was sweet for them but those actors are just too young to be dreamy... gimme Matt Damon any day. I think it's fine to out of the loop, it just means your a normal grown-up.... it's the grown ups who want to be kids that always end up on the front page of the newspapers.

I don't twitter, I joiined facebook but only because my co-workers urged me to. But I never have time to go on and chat with anyone! I did read the first twilight book because my teen DD nagged me to. I guess I'm getting old too because I just didn't get all the hoopla made over it. Mark me as part of the un-kewl crowd.

I tried to read the Twilight books (in an effort to relate to my DS15 who owns them). I was less than impressed with her writing style and couldn't relate to the main character. I never finished the first one.

Agree that Nora Roberts' style is much better.

Whatever you do - DON'T READ THE BOOKS! I read the first one because I wanted to see what the hoopla was about. Holy crap! Like I need to read about teenage angst?? I didn't like this crap when I was a teenager.

Even my DSD (21 now), who started reading the series when it first came out was bored by the end of the series. She even told me that it got so bad she only finished the last book because she started it. This is a kid that can't get enough books in her life!!! Don't waste your time or your mind.

And I do have Facebook but only go on to see everyone's pictures. I last about 3 minutes on facebook and then I'm off. I spend more time on the Dis. I don't tweet and I still spell out the words on texting. I got myself a cell with a full keyboard because I got tired of txting on a regular phone.

We use our cell phone to CALL people--we don't text.

My DD's 4th grade class is making up 2 themed baskets to raffle off. Themes are Twilight & Bakugan. I had no earthly idea what either one was & had to send an email to the room mom to give me a clue what she was looking for.

Twilight maynot be everyones cuppa tea, but I wouldn't tell someone not to read it. Everyone should make the choice for themselves to like or dislike the books. The Twilight series were the first books in 3 years that I have read that are not text books.

Although it maybe a teen series of books, my friends (30 somethings moms) like the books. Even though I live in Washington I am not rushing over the mountains to Forks or La Push.

I do text, facebook, myspace and I have a Twitter acct but I haven't tweeted in months.

I have a pre-paid cell phone using an old plan where I pay 15 cents per minute and don't have to reload every month, only when I need more minutes (I said it's an old plan). Never read Twilight OR Harry Potter, but I'd like to read them some day, I'm curious.

But we DO have the internet, cable channels 2 - 99, and....we go to Disneyworld at least once a year. I'm happy!

If you care about quality of writing, Harry Potter is MUCH better than Twilight. Rowling did an amazing job of intertwining themes to make it to the final book.

I have read the Twilight books...found them just "eh." I love vampires; I have two shelves in one of my bookcases devoted to vampires (a lot of reference books, believe it or not), but I didn't think the Twilight novels were all that great. No interest in seeing the movies either.

No Twitter, but I do Facebook.

I have an mp3 player, no iPod. Because it would have cost me the same amount of money for a plain-jane 8g iPod that only played music as it did for the 30g audio/video/radio/photo mp3 player that I did buy. No contest there.

I have a Tracfone cell phone. An old one that only makes and receives calls. No texting, no photos...

Heck, even my landline at home doesn't even have call waiting or voice mail! Just caller ID.

Now, back to my research for a record player so I can play my vinyl records again...

I don't think it's a question of being in or out of the loop. I enjoy popular culture, so I read things like the AV Club, and when I enjoy something, it seems to stick. Sometimes I get curious and try something, but a lot of times things become popular after I've discovered them. Then, unless I really enjoy it, I lose interest.

On the other hand, DD10 listens to Radio Disney constantly, so I know the trends in tween music. I can actually recognize some of the female singers they feature, instead of all of them sounding exactly alike.

I haven't read Twilight yet, but know that I will have to in a year or two, before DD10 gets to it. I did, much to DW's disapproval, rent the movie and watched it with my daughter. Not being a tween or teenage girl, I really didn't enjoy it. I prefer my vampires to be stalked by Anita Blake or chasing Mina Harker.

Ok, with Twilight don't worry, it's mostly teenage angst and bad literature.

Twitter, don't worry about that either, I actually had a Twitter but got so annoyed with telling people what I was doing "Still blinking" that I made up humerous stuff before I just decided to delete it.
Facebook is just myspace 2.0.
I do still text out the words on my cell for some reason although my cousin the same age as I do can text at the speed of light. I don't see the point of text messaging because if you really want to talk to me, just call ,I have unlimited service and usually I am doing other things while talking on the phone like doing the dishes or writing so I am not going to sit around and text.

Shamefully, I am 23 and probably should know about this stuff but meh'.
