A custom title can be something that you type in yourself (in which case it will be black), or may be colored text that is only bestowed by the Tag Fairy (at her whim, she does not take requests).
If you have a colored tag from the Tag Fairy, any changes that you then make to your custom title will make the the Tag Fairy's work go "poof"!
If you have a custom title (either do-it-yourself or from the Tag Fairy) and you DELETE it, you will then get whatever automatic title has been set for the number of posts you have.

Thank you so much for explaining this, Kathy. I have wondered about this too. I'm pretty sure those of us who have been visited by the Tag Fairy wear our tags as a badge of honor and would rather keep the colored tag than lose it by becoming a "Mousketeer" or a "Veteran"...although sometimes I wonder. the thing is...
...I think mine scares newbies...yep...sigh...and the reason I have that one is because I misunderstood something a webmaster said about a trip he took through Georgia...you know those signs that advertise, ahem...minimally clothed girls? I can't even remember what I said, but evidently it tickled his funnybone and voila!...I now "bare all!"
Anyhow...it's my tag so I bare it proudly! I even wrote a song about it at the time entitled...The Beer Bare All Polka!

..I'm on here by my name...but I really want a "nickname" like everyone else has...for the longest time I thought they were assigned by someone and wondered why I didn't have one....I'm now thinking that I need to do it myself - I'm not very computer savy, so it better not be hard to do!!! If someone could let me know....I could have a new title really soon! I just have to think of a good one..
