I'm Not As Tink As You Kronk I Am - Final Thoughts on Mustard's January Trip to WDW

great updates of the sailing! Looks like that is so much fun. I don't know if I'd be brave enough to do it though  I'm sure the view is breath taking. How come you and your DW didn't partake in the fun?

That looks like something I'd totally do. I had the opportunity to do it with my sister last January, but I didn't go because I didn't want to not take the kids. I'll do it someday. Didn't you go up? What about DW?

good question, you two!

hey, I guess I happened to look at my User CP just after you posted. And I'm a fast reader, too.

Oh I can imagine! I noticed they were both bending their toes backward before landing, probably trying to thaw them!

Glad your mom didn't lose her shoes!

Well, that is good...Disney seems to do EVERYTHING better than everyone else!

Good timing that - yay! Yeah, I warmed up Bean's toes and DW helped MiL warm hers up before we got their shoes back on. And my mom said she had no problems with her shoes. I think the guys were more referring to people wearing crocs or sandals and such. Ah well, live and learn.

Yes, Disney does usually do it better :wizard:

Yes, it is something DW and I will eventually do. For us it came down to making this something special for the grandmas and their grandbabies :) We'll get our chance somewhere down the road.

hey Mustard. Sorry I have been slacking. Haven't been around much. I read the end of the update from cindy's castle and the pictures with the bad girls. Love Love those pictures of the wicked stepmother and step sisters. That is awesome that they took such time with the girls and made a specticle out of it. I'm sure that is something they will never forget :goodvibes

No worries Carla, we all get swallowed up by RL here and there. Glad you were able to get some time to catch up with my little epic  I really loved the interaction between the stepmother/stepsisters and my girls - they were just having a great time and it showed.

They had a wonderful time and I think you'd do great doing it yourself :thumbsup2 We'll get up there one of these days - we both want to do it. And actually MiL and my mom tried to convince us to do it while we were out on the boat. I think for me I want to make it a more romantic experience for the two of us. We'll see what life brings us ;)

good question, you two!

Yes, they are a couple of sharp cookies for sure!

Hey all, Just throwing up a few pics from the Memorial Day parade the the DDs were in :)

The Kermit car was pretty cool :thumbsup2
parade01.jpg

I was in the staging area near Bean so I got some cool shots of the fleet of classics coming out (I took a bunch of pics of them but I won't torture you with them ;) )
parade02.jpg

I moved out onto the parade route ahead of the girls and followed them down. Here's Bean!
parade03.jpg

parade04.jpg

And here comes my Pumpkin Girl!
parade06.jpg

She's second from the left in these two

parade07.jpg

They both had a great time and I was happy because the rain held off until AFTER the parade :rotfl2:

Yes, the Kermit car is cool!:thumbsup2

Cute pic of Bean on the tractor.::yes::

Pumpkin Girl's a flutist, huh? So, how long does she have to wait until she gets to do the parade in WDW?:lmao:

Cool parade pics! My sister played flute in marching band all through high school, too! I was always disappointed that they didn't have marching orchestra, lol - I played viola.

But, we got to be in a (smaller) parade on Memorial Day, too. All the local Scouts marched, and they let the families march with the Cub Scouts, so I was glad I'd worn navy blue so as not to clash, lol. The parade was fun, but the kids got restless during the 30 minutes of speeches afterwards!

Thanks! Did you manage to get any video of all the interaction? I really gotta remember to bring my video camera this year. I wanna be able to show my kids (whenever I have some) what their parents were like before they were around

Haha Thanks but I'm not so confident about that. Maybe if I had someone going up tandum with me...is there a weight limit as to how many can go up at once?

ooooo having it be romantic for you and your DW sounds great!! Better than a carriage ride for sure. Hope you guys get to do it on your next trip. I'm anxious to see if you guys are already planning your next trip :hyper:

awww shucks, thanks!

Love the parade pictures. The kermit car is definitely cool!

That is so cool that Bean and Pumpkin Girl both got to be in the parade. And even more cool that the middle school does marching band! I didn't get to be in marching band till I was in High School. My sister played the flute too. Is this Pumpkin Girl's first year in band? How does she like it? Hope she sticks with it so she can do the parade through MK one year :goodvibes

I wish there were old time small town parades around here....:(

Those pix are great. Thanks for sharing.....:thumbsup2

Sorry I didn't answer sooner - we spent the past 4 days down in Cali for my nephew-in-law's HS grad and my bro-in-law's b-day ...just got back in last night and I'm exausted! :surfweb:

Yes, the Kermit car is cool!:thumbsup2

Cute pic of Bean on the tractor.::yes::

Pumpkin Girl's a flutist, huh? So, how long does she have to wait until she gets to do the parade in WDW?

Yeah, it was amazing how much having Kermit hanging out the window added to that car :D Thank you on the Bean pic. It was funny because I took quite a few pics of her but her hand was getting tired from waving the flag so she was frowning in most of them :lmao:

Yes, Pumpkin Girl has been playing flute for 3 years now and is getting pretty good. Ohhh, I'm sure she'd LOVE the opportunity to play a parade at WDW :hyper:

She did aye? Did she have fun with it or was it a lot of work? DD11 is hesitant about joining the marching band when she gets to HS because they are VERY compeditive and practice a lot. They start having practices before summer is even over. But they are very good and win competitions and get to travel quite a bit, so we'll see.

Hehehe, yes - marching with a viola would be a bit troublesome. But you got to do your performances indoors and sitting, which I consider a big bonus :thumbsup2

We had quite the contingent of Boy Scouts at ours too! I'm glad you were able to get out there and march with your DS :) Speeches do tent to make the little ones a bit squirmy. We don't have speeches after ours - we have a carnival set up at the city park put on by Davis shows and jetboat races on the river - whoohoo!

Thanks! Did you manage to get any video of all the interaction? I really gotta remember to bring my video camera this year. I wanna be able to show my kids (whenever I have some) what their parents were like before they were around

No, it was a bit misty with rain that day so I didn't do anything with the video camera, but it would have been a great moment to capture, that's for sure!

We didn't get a video camera UNTIL we had kids and most of the footage is of them - go figure, aye? :confused3 :rotfl: But yes, you should get some footage of you two having fun and doing the Dis!

As far as going tandem, you need a minimum of 125lbs and a total combined weight of no more than 330lbs. I think it would be a great thing for you two to do as a couple :)

We did the carriage ride thing as part of our 11th anniversary (I have a thing for planning our big events on off years). I flew DW and I to SLC to take her to the broadway production of Phantom of the Opera (her favorite musical). We stayed at a really nice hotel, got a couples massage, and saw the sites.

For the evening of the show she wore an old-style formal dress and I wore an old fashioned tux (one with the long jacket). We took a cab to this fantastic steak house and had a great meal, then I had a carriage take us from there to the front of the theater, so she got to make a grand entrance!

We had seats 2nd row on the isle and I even enjoyed the show - lol. It was a great time and it ALWAYS gets me in trouble with my friends when DW starts talking to their wives about it. They get the "how come YOU never do that kind of stuff for ME????" thing :rotfl2:

We're actually taking the DDs to see it in Sacremento the week after next so we'll see how they like it ;) Sorry, got off on a bit of a tangent there didn't I?

Well I already want to plan the next trip and I think it will just be a matter of setting the date and have my wife sigh and start trying to get the money saved for it - hehehe. I want to do either the not so scary halloween timeframe or between Thanksgiving and Christmas to see all the decorations. But then again I want us to be able to do a PPP while we're there so we'll just have to see how it comes together.

You're very welcome! :goodvibes

Yay Kermit! Yes, I was very happy to hear they were both doing it. There has been years where it was just DD11 and Bean got a little jealous  The marching band thing was very impromptu. They had been practicing the music for months but didn't even START practicing marching until the week before the parade :lmao: They pulled it off very well though and DD11 was VERY excited that she got to be in the front row.

As I said to Nikki, she's just finished her 3rd year playing (we have a pretty decent music program and you can start on an instrument in 4th grade). She likes it but there were problems with their band teacher being let go (big story full of drama). But the upside is that her school is getting the band teacher from the other middle school. He is very dynamic and although he makes them work hard, he still keeps it fun!

We'll see if she continues into HS, she has 2 more years of middle school to go. I think when push comes to shove she'll go for marching band. Their program is very intense as I wall telling Irene, but they have won a whole grocery list of awards at state, regional, and national competitions.

And yes, to march at Disney would be a dream come true for her ...well, and me too ;)

Great parade pics! I  Kermie!!!

Your daughters look stoked to be in the parade!

Thankyee Cheri! Kermit is a cool little amphibian and yes, the girls were very excited to be there :-]

I wish there were old time small town parades around here....:(

Those pix are great. Thanks for sharing.....:thumbsup2

Hey Jordan! Sorry to hear that there aren't any there. I've done the big city thing (Phoenix, Denver, Atlanta) and they have their perks, but here my family's quality of life is pretty high. We have four seasons, there's lots of outdoor stuff to do, and because of their activities both of my girls have been pictured in the local newspaper (DD11 on multiple occastions).

You're very welcome and thanks for stopping by :thumbsup2

Okay, where was I with our last fun-filled day? Oh yes!

With touchdown complete the ladies get unbuckled. Here comes our Pumpkin Girl
Dis08_1746.JPG

…and then Grandma Dollface
Dis08_1747.JPG

Soooo, do YOU think they had a good time? :D :D :D
Dis08_1748.JPG

Interview time!
Dis08_1749.JPG

I think this is one of my favorite shots of the parasailing experience – just pure joy on both of their faces :-]
Dis08_1750.JPG

We came back to the dock and I gave the guys a BIG tip for such a wonderful time and another dream come true for my fam.

The girls were full of energy and chased each other around a bit while we got ourselves together
Dis08_1751.JPG

Dis08_1752.JPG

DD11 came across this little number and was ecstatic to hear that you could legally drive it at the age of 12 …only 7 short months away – lol
Dis08_1753.JPG

Bean of course had to have her turn in it
Dis08_1754.JPG

We headed back towards the Contemporary and stopped for some Mickey Ears shots. As you can see DD11 has made off with Papa John’s hat :D
Dis08_1755.JPG

Dis08_1757.JPG

Dis08_1760.JPG

And I believe that out of the 1,800 shots (yes, you’ve waded through about 1,800 pictures if you’ve stuck with my TR – lolol) this is one of my favorite of the trip :-]
Dis08_1764.JPG

I popped a quick “playing with mirrors” shot in the elevator to show that I was there and to capture the three smiles of my Pumpkin Girl :D
Dis08_1765.JPG

We rode up the back elevator and stopped to do a last minute coin press in the area where you switch from the back elevators to the front ones to ride up to the monorail station. When we got up top I snapped a few shots of our surroundings while we waited for the last train out of town.

Once we boarded Bean managed to get Papa John’s hat, so he proudly wore her ears :D
Dis08_1772.JPG

The ride was all too quick and we were soon out of the TTC and on our way to the parking lot. I hung back a bit to watch our weary but happy travelers make their way down the path.
Dis08_1773.JPG

Dis08_1774.JPG

We headed down and up and I stopped one more time to take the very last picture. It is a simple one but in my eyes says so much.
Dis08_1775.JPG

We loaded up and drove back to the resort. Most of the fam stayed there to pack while DW and I loaded up 2 SUITCASES full of memorabilia that we had collected over the past 12 days. We were in search of the nearest UPS store and our darned GPS lead us to a UPS drop box instead.

After getting directions a couple of times and taking several wrong turns we finally found it with 30 minutes left before closing time. I can tell you it took all 30 minutes to get everything checked and wrapped and set for boxing. The clerks were very understanding despite our load of goodies coming in at the 11th hour. I’m sure they get it a lot. We thanked them profusely and carried our now empty suitcases out to the van and picked up Subway, which was thankfully located right next door.

Back at the resort we ate and packed and reflected on our wonderful adventures. My mom was especially thankful, giving lots of hugs and saying that she couldn’t believe how many dreams had come true for her during this trip. Hearing that really made all of the planning and weirdness associated with making this come together worthwhile :-]

We had an 8am flight the next day so it was late to bed and early to rise. As fate would have it, it was foggy the next morning. It took FOREVER for our GPS to acquire a signal and then the exit it had planned for us to take towards the car rental place was under construction! We took the next exit and wound our way to the rental place. When we got there a shuttle was waiting and about to depart for the airport. So we got to scramble and get the bags from the van to the shuttle and rush through the “walk around” with the rental return guy.

The shuttle trip was uneventful and I was happy to dig in and see that I had enough cash left to do the curbside check-in of our bags. We made our way to our gate, which was in an area that was under construction. I remember lots of black plastic and exposed ceilings. We all slept as much as humanly possible on the way back and after a long flight from MCO to SFO and a short and very cramped one from SFO to home we packed up and drove the last 35 miles to our house.

It was only 3pm but felt MUCH later. We brought the suitcases in and collapsed, happy that it was only Saturday afternoon and that we had through Sunday night to try and recover from the jetlag. Oh, and the next morning we awoke to fresh snow – good ole Oregon apparently wanted to welcome us back to winter – lolol
Dis08_1777.JPG

So as our trip began, so it ended. But now we had lots of wonderful memories to keep us warm :-]

Up next, final thoughts on our time at “The World” and the all important question, would I take on the mantle of planning something this big again???

And I believe that out of the 1,800 shots (yes, you’ve waded through about 1,800 pictures if you’ve stuck with my TR – lolol) this is one of my favorite of the trip :-]

Ooh - that's a great pic! I don't think I've seen that statue before, either - very cool. (oops - clipped the wrong one!)

And, oh no, your trip is over!!!

My sister's band wasn't very competitive - they did some competitions, but I can't remember how far they got. I think they had a fair amount of practice, but I don't remember her really complaining about it. Actually, the worst was some of the weather they got on a couple of Memorial Day parades. But then, it seems like so much kid stuff is more competitive these day - my nieces who cheerlead have practice 5x/week, even in 2nd grade!

Hehehe, yes - marching with a viola would be a bit troublesome. But you got to do your performances indoors and sitting, which I consider a big bonus
That is a good point, I suppose. And I did get to do pit orchestra for the variety shows and spring musicals each year.

We had quite the contingent of Boy Scouts at ours too! I'm glad you were able to get out there and march with your DS Speeches do tent to make the little ones a bit squirmy. We don't have speeches after ours - we have a carnival set up at the city park put on by Davis shows and jetboat races on the river - whoohoo!
That sounds like a much better deal! I actually learned a lot about the history of Memorial Day, though, during the speeches. Our town has a carnival sort of thing in a couple of weeks, and the scouts get to march again in that, if he wants. Hm - on dd's 1st day of ballet lessons - need to check on the timing for that!

And, oh no, your trip is over!!!

Yes, I love that pic. You have to go out the back doors of the Contemporary towards the marina for that statue/sculpture ;) I think I remember that Dan had some shots of it on his TR too.

Yup, it is finally coming to an end …and to think, it only took me 4 MONTHS to get it finished! :lmao:

But then, it seems like so much kid stuff is more competitive these day - my nieces who cheerlead have practice 5x/week, even in 2nd grade!

My wife’s boss has a daughter that just finished her last year of HS and was in the marching band all 4 years. It was crazy how much she had to practice. And they would be out there rain or shine, snow or fog or whatever. You are very right about the cheer stuff – both my DDs did gymnastics and DD11 just finished a year of cheer. At one point she was doing 16hrs of practice a week year round :scared1:

That is a good point, I suppose. And I did get to do pit orchestra for the variety shows and spring musicals each year.

Well that’s very cool! Do you still play?

That’s true, all of the remembrance stuff is held at the local cemeteries and does not get the crowds that the “fun” stuff does. Oh, well I hope y’all have fun at your carnival and that you can get your schedule settled between his marching and DD’s ballet!

My guess is that you would do it again in a heartbeat....when's the next trip....;)

Yeah, you got me there …and as far as when the next one will be you’ll have to wait for my final thoughts post ;)

Aww, I hate leaving! I can't believe it's over!

Loved the pictures of your final moments at WDW. My favorite was the one of Papa John wearing Bean's mouse ears.:lmao:

1800 pictures?!?!?!?

I also hate going back to snow! That really stinks!:headache:

ok all caught up and it is over.

the pics were beautiful.

the para-sailing looked like fun.

I hate last days, they make me so sad.

I think you will be going again, a certain soon to be 12 year old wants to ride a boat by herself.

Sounded like a magical trip and thanks for sharing with us.

Well that’s very cool! Do you still play?
Its been a few years since I've picked it up, but I still have it. The last time I played in any organized manner was in college - but then I broke my wrist, and that sort of blew that semester of orchestra. The next year, I was in France, so I didn't bring it there, and that sort of ended it. I did eventually pick up guitar, tho, and play that somewhat more often, but not much lately.

Well, I checked the schedules - the parade is the week between the last day of swim lessons, and the 1st day of pre-ballet. Phew! (Because no one wants us to have a chance to sleep in on a Saturday, apparently...)

Yes, it was at once a sad thing and also a relief ....12 days of running around sure wore us out. But if asked, we would have stayed another week :thumbsup2 :rotfl2:

The girls and Papa John had a lot of fun wrestling over his hat. Watching them brought a lot of smiles to all of us and really made those last couple of hours with him and my mom extra special :lovestruc

Hehehe, yup - 1,800 shots. Crazy I know, but I'm glad I did it. LOTS of memories to look back on ;)

As far as the snow goes, we're in a valley so it doesn't stick for more than a couple of days ...then we're back to rain. The girls were happy though, they had two weeks off and then came back to a snow day :lmao:

Hiya Scott! Yup, it had to end sometime I guess - lol. Thank you about the pics and the parasailing is certainly something I want to try in the future :-]

Yeah, I'm already firming up a timeframe ...not this year but next year, hmmmm :rolleyes1

It was funny though, I don't remember being sad. We saw SO MUCH and had such an amazing adventure I was just happy it came together so well despite the little hiccups. I guess that's the planner in me - I checked off everything on my list and I was done ::yes:: But it doesn't make the urge to go back as soon as we can go away, that's for sure!

Thank you for coming along for the ride :goodvibes

Ouch, a broken wrist would certainly put a stop to any playing and yeah, when in France you don't generally think about practicing an instrument in your spare time. Glad you found a new instrument to work with and I hope you get some free time to play it :thumbsup2

Lucky break with the scheduling and I know what you mean about all this stuff keeping away those lazy weekends. Oh well, maybe sometime NEXT month we'll both get a chance to sleep in :cloud9: :rotfl2:

I'm curious as to how much they charged you to ship everything? 2 suitcases full seems like it would cost a pretty penny! Were those the suitcases you needed to pack up the rest of your stuff in the room? I'll bet that was a pain going back to finish packing. I hate the last day!!

I LOVE hearing what your mom said. It is so sweet! It made me smile so big, you have no idea!

I didn't realize GPS had trouble in the fog. :confused3 I'll keep that in mind!

I never get to see snow like that...wow!

Sounds like an amazing trip, and I'm so sad it's "over" again.

The answer to your last question is YES! :goodvibes
