I'm joining Teresa and Kathy on their journey to health. Who's with me?

Thank you everyone for joining Teresa and I on our journey to a healthier life. At this point I am doing this for me. I will be sharing but I am not holding anyone accountable. I am a big fan of doing things when the time is right. My mind is in that place now to try this.

As I said on the Podcast I have lived through much worse that starting to exercise and eat healthy but this is going to be a tough challenge. I know that I need to take baby steps but to keep on taking them no matter what happens but easier said than done.

Please know that I appreciate every word of encourgement from all of you. It means more than you know.

Thanks for your support everyone!!!

Baby steps are good. It sounds like you are on the road to healthier living..:goodvibes

Thank you for sharing and letting us join you on and support you in this journey. My fitbit says my BMI is a little high at 26 and I would love to achieve in getting that down in ok range instead of where it is. My weight is up 8 pounds since last year in part because I spent 7 months laying around with a very aggravated disk herniation that kept me from doing much. Since getting my fitbit I realized how little I was actually moving around each day. In the last month or so I have upped my activity level to at least 10 flights of stairs each day and a goal of 5,000 steps each day as well. My ultimate goal is to be able to walk a 5K with my DIS friends at one of the RunDisney events.

Looking forward to getting fit together!

Ski season ends for me on Sunday (local hill where I have a season pass closes). Starting Monday, my 3-4 times per week of skiing will be replaced by a combination of treadmill, neighborhood walking, and maybe starting some yoga DVDs. My wife is very fitness committed and I look to her and our children for inspiration.

I really need to watch what I eat better. Our meals are pretty healthy ( I can recommend some good cookbooks and websites). My big issue is snacking. I come home from work.and am ravenous. So I search for anything not tied down...salty is my preference, especially tortilla chips and Cheese Itz . Any ideas of alternatives?

My goal is to get my BMI down a few points and improve my stamina. I also have slightly elevated BP, so I take a low dose of lisinopril. Would not mind getting that in control via lowering sodium intake and increasing my exercise.

Good luck to everyone on here!

Sitting in rehearsal right now, but after I'm out, it's a healthy lunch and a walk for me!!

Just be sure to get enough calories and to meet your macro needs. Eating too few calories can have a negative impact on your health. Very few people need to drop all the way to 1200 calories. Know your BMR and your TDEE. Make sure that when you lose weight that you are being healthy about it. Find what works for you but be careful about all the false information out there. If you find something that works within your life then you are more likely to stick with it.

Very few people need to drop all the way to 1200 calories.

Good point. The dietitian/certified diabetes educator who I work with teaches that a healthy meal should be about 500 calories plus a couple of snacks of about 100 calories each day, so that comes out to 1,700 at least. I'd say virtually nobody should be on 1,200 calories.

Trying my best to follow the 500 calories/meal rule is really what got me in better shape. Of course, it can be very difficult to follow when you eat out, especially if the restaurant doesn't list calorie content. Even if they do, it is tough to find places that have meals that fit. We were at one restaurant recently that had a "calorie counter" menu. The first item on that menu was 770 calories. I can only imagine the calories on the regular part of the menu if they consider 770 to be their low-cal option.

I'm in too! I'm getting married in December and want to drop at least 15kg by then. (What's that in pounds? Around 35 I think)

Having the support of my fiance has been key for me. He doesn't have much to lose at all but he's been coming to the gym with me 5 times a week and agreeably eating the healthier meals I've started putting in front of him.

I just finished a 6.5 mile run in Central Park while listening to this week's shows. It was great to hear Kathy and Teresa's perspective. I know a lot of us listen to the podcast while we exercise, but it was especially cool to hear about fitness while running today.

I'm in!

I know I've had to lose weight for a long time...

I don't want to do it because I want to be thin...

I want to do it to be healthier...

I've already cut out a lot of the binging I've been doing with candy, etc... and I'm down a couple of lbs. I'm going to start walking very soon and watching what I eat.

Ten lb intervals for me... that way I don't get too overwhelmed.

It's another day! A fresh start! Make good choices today, and if you slip up, just get back up and try again!

Off to the grocery! Healthy meals need made! :)

way to go everyone! :cool1: As a physical therapist, I always encourage my patients to be realistic, if all you can do one day is a 10 minute walk, that is great! It's better then 10 minutes of sitting. And you don't have to do all of your minutes of exercise at one time - 10 minutes 3 times a day is as effective as 30 minutes at once. And here is the best news of all... you are going to feel better, have more energy, and be happier when you embrace a healthier lifestyle - these are PROVEN facts!!! I promise!

Healthier lifestyle, like others have mentioned, is not about the scale. It's about total health - physical (stay active and try to eat well most of the time - there is still room for treats, just moderate), mental (find support if you need it, take care of the inside too, surround yourself with positive people), and spiritual (whatever this means to you - for me it's my faith and I also really enjoy yoga). Again, within days of making an effort you will notice a positive change!

Listen, I do not LOVE exercise either, so I walk, walk, walk (while listening to my disunplugged and anything else Disney). I only allow myself to listen when I'm walking - it's my reward. Everyday is a fresh start - I had a big piece of chocolate cake last night, oh well, today, no cake and a walk, moving forward.

It's NEVER to late to change your health - you can do it!::yes::

Just listened to the habit heroes podcast from February. Although the order is off chronologically, it is a great follow-up to the getting fit for your trip discussion.
My goal lose 6.5% bodyfat (~14 lbs of BF) by our fall cruise/trip.

I'm curious how you intend to determine that.

Good question Steve.
3 methods - bodyfat scale, caliper, and hydrostatic.
Tanita BF-680 - (weekly) The percent reduction will be based on a baseline established using a tanita body fat scale. I understand that multiple factors (i.e. hydration, consumption of alcohol, time of day, etc.) can influence the accuracy and reading on these scales, but I have also found that if all variable are equal, the accuracy is pretty close to hydrostatic testing for me. The method I use to help reduce outside factors is weighing myself on the scale in the morning, immediately after waking, and before drinking water.
Caliper - accu-measure (monthly)
Hydrostatic - local company * probably in September.

Ultimately, I look @ the Tanita as my easiest, and most accurate tool, to show change over a period if time because my measurements (process and results) have been consistent.

Let me know if this helps. Happy to take the conversation offline via pm if it makes more sense to do so.

Mike

I'm on this path, too. A long time ago Pete mentioned the couch to 5K program and said that he thought he might be able to do it. I didn't do anything about it at the time, but have heard Pete talk about he has lost weight and how he has changed the way he ate.

When I visited the doctor a couple of months ago, I realized I had hit an all time high on my weight. A friend suggested doing the couch to 5K program together, and we often text back and forth to compare meals and provide each other support.

Just hearing everyone talk about their own struggles and plans has been quite inspiring. I started about a month ago and have lost around eight pounds so far. There are many, many, many more to go! But I feel better and look forward to the walk/run time.

I heard Kevin say a while ago that he didn't like the idea of weighing in daily. I loved that advice, along with the idea that I will stumble sometimes and it doesn't mean I need to give up or that all is lost.

So many thanks to Kathy,Teresa, and for me Pete, especially for talking about this. I'll say this. For me, it has been a godsend to have a friend working along same lines.

Thanks all!

OK! It's Monday everyone!! ..... :sad1::crazy2:

If you fell off the wagon this weekend, it's time to get back on! Drink lots of water, move a lot, and make healthy food choices.

This morning was 2 eggs scrambled with a big handful of arugula, and a medjool date. Oh, and a HUGE bottle of water as I drove in to work.

Lunch is a handful of cashews, a handful of berries, a handful of cherry tomatoes, and leftover ground beef on top of roasted potatoes.

Dinner tonight will be pulled pork lettuce wraps with a side of mashed cauliflower and a banana with almond butter for dessert.

Good luck today, everyone!! :hippie: :cheer2:

May I join in? We eat pretty well over here, chicken, fish, salads, veggies, but DH and I are guilty of NOT exercising enough. As we age it doesn't seem to matter as much that we are eating healthy, if we are not exercising, the weight still seems to pile on. I feel like crud, and have vowed to start walking everyday again. I used to run, but since the three DD's, things don't stay in place too well when I run.

So walking it is, and what an amazing difference it makes to my day. I am trying to motivate DH to start riding his bike to work, but it is hard. I have to realize that I have to start with myself even if he isn't onboard yet.

So I would love to be on board with you all if you will have me! :flower3:
