I'm I allowed to bring:

Let me try to clarify....the RULE is no beverages in your checked bags....
Exactly. Not blaming anyone here who thought it was right because the PORTERS allowed it, but: On one of my cruises a few years ago, when luggage arrived at the cabin next door, two bags were totally saturated with a dark liquid. They said it had leaked from someone else's bag when the luggage was piled up prior to delivery. They later told me that it did seep in to the inside of one bag and ruined a dress. It must have been wine, juice or soda. More recently I know of one couple who checked water in their luggage and had some of it leak. No serious damage, but it leaked.

The problem is that the majority of us nowadays use soft-sided bags, and cruise luggage is handled like airline luggage. It is NOT neatly placed standing on its own, but piled in a huge stack in the baggage rooms until delivery. If the ones near the bottom of that weighty stack happen to have beverages in them, there is always a POSSIBILITY of leakage. If you ever got a glance at one of those baggage rooms when it is full, you would likely decide to never pack any liquids in a checked bag again beyond a small amount of toiletries. The RULE is there for a reason! You can bring your beverages, but please carry them on. ;)

MJ is correct - Those non-CM porters will take almost anything for a good tip.

Luggage gets piled high on carts, and is then moved with forklifts.

No wonder DCL says "no liquids in checked luggage."

That is why I always put any liquids or cream in a zipploc and then in a plastic bag. I once had the unfortunate experience of having a shampoo bottle liquid all over my suitcase. :sad2: I ended up having to wash everything in the hotel tub :laundy:

Hello,
Last time i went on the cruise...not too long ago, i stopped by the super market on the way to the port and picked up a case of water. At the dock, i checked in the case of water as a seperate bag and it arrived at my doorstep later that evening. With that said, i've heard from many many castmembers that it is alright. I've seen people at the port check in a case of beer too...again no issues.

In my luggage i had food...i have a special dietary restriction, but i also brought some regular goodies for me to munch on...kinda find the ship food a lil bland...i'm more of a spicy type of person, but again, no questions asked.

Also, on the stops, at the port, i've seen tons of people do some shopping for snacks and drinks at places like cvs at key west and bring them onboard, no questions asked.

I just hope my bag is not under anyone's bottles/case of wine, beer, soda or water that they check with the porters.

Just this past Friday (I love saying that:goodvibes), I watched a room steward pick up a piece of luggage from the hallway and literally throw it on top of the pile of bags waiting to be sent down at the end of the cruise. I would NEVER pack anything breakable/leakable (new word ;)) in my luggage.

When we picked our case UP the last time going home there was spirits of some kind soaked through a case and all over the floor, it was stinking.

Ditto here! It doesn't matter if certain CMs MAY say it's "alright." They are trying not to "offend the guest" (just as those in WDW won't say anything to a guest who changes their child's diaper on a restaurant table!). The RULES should be what matter, but most guests don't bother to even read them much less heed them.

Those who put large amounts of liquids (ie. beverages) in their checked luggage are not only risking damaged baggage and contents themselves, but are passing on much of that risk to anyone whose luggage happens to be beneath or beside theirs in the "pile." If your bags with liquid ever suffer the consequences of being beneath several hundred pounds of luggage of others, hopefully you will learn a valuable lesson. ;)

With respect.:goodvibes
IMHO I am sure most guests do read and stick to the rules, but I am a trustworthy, hopefull and (gullable?) person
But imho, most rules are obvious and dont need to be read.
ie, red wine in suitcase and changing nappy on a table:goodvibes

Well, one would HOPE the guests read the rules/FAQ, but what makes me think a lot of them don't is many of the questions asked here on the DIS and elsewhere by those who booked many months prior so would have had time to read DCL's FAQ, plus what many guests bring aboard or do (like ironing in their stateroom). It seems some guests do whatever they can get away with. And PLEASE - That comment is NOT directed at any individual. It's just what I have observed through the years of cruising.

But I agree with you. IF everyone used common sense, that is all that would be needed. Even those who don't read the rules do fine if they think about the possible consequences of their actions on both themselves and other guests.

I've never had a problem carrying on my drinks. We always board either 2/3 and still only have a minimal wait to get into our rooms. There really is no reason to take the chance of spillage and check your drinks. I say carry on!! The people sitting with us in the terminal last October were bragging about carrying on 4 cases of beer, a bottle of vodka, and a bottle of rum...I hope they remembered their cruise!;)

At Port Canaveral in January, at the curbside drop-off area, we saw a guy holding a large suitcase over the edge of the crub as red wine leaked out.

Apparently the bottle broke on his way to the port.

He couldn't blame the cab driver or shuttle driver, since they did not know what was in the suitcase when they loaded it.

Are juices readily available at all times? What kind?

Juices are available in the dining rooms at all meals--apple, orange, cranberry, tomato, prune, V-8...dont' know what else. At times that the dining rooms aren't open, they are available from room service.

Huge piles moved with forklift. That explains the condition of a suitcase we got. It arrived with the metal frame hugely bent. DD looked at it and asked "How did they even manage to do THAT?" Granted, it was the only time we've seen such a thing in MANY cruises, but the case was totally ruined.

We have seen all types of things happen as those bags arrive to the ship. ONe of my favorite things to do is right prior to the safety drill to go out on the verandah and watch them load the ship... We have cruised DCL many times, so we do not need to "explore" as all of the newbies are. We eat and go back to our room to unpack and settle in. Well, I have seen bags pop open and the stuff get stuffed back in. I have seen the fork lift drop all of the bags as they are being lowered to the belt.... Last cruise I saw someone's garmet bag come unzipped, the tux fall out and the lift drive over it.:scared1: The guy when he notice did get out, pick it up, dust it off, rehang it on the hanger and put it back in the bag.... I would NEVER pack anything that could not be tossed, stacked, thrown, squashed, tumbled and I guess driven over....:lmao: So please be cautious with anything you put in your bags.... The joys of watching from the verandah... The reason we get it... To watch the bags arrive and watch the people run for the ship when getting left...:lmao: I know crazy sense of excitement, but well worth the $$$.

Don't forget watching the DCL bus roll up at 4:55 with the late arrivals from the airport (they'll only do this if you bought DCL air. Otherwise, you have to be there before the last person WITH DCL air who is late. Translation, if you're there before the last person they are holding for, you are on.
