What are these better ways to save 5% on a Disney cruise?
I'm big on credit cards and bonuses, but it's not for everyone. I just got a cc with 3000k spend with 500 dollars back. I tend to make a lot of changes to vacations and I wouldn't want to be locked into anything with gift cards.

Why don't you just get your cash back? I'm scheduled for a cruise 4/12, I've been able to get it all back in cash. Getting refunds in credits is really stupid.
Exactly how did you pay for your cruise in cash? I see you just joined today.

Meant only for a giggle....

and of course ya cant forget about -;)

You get refunded in your original method of payment. The OP used gift cards to pay for the cruise and, therefore, is being refunded in gift cards

We've been wanting to try an ABD for a while now, but the cost keeps putting us off. That's a nice chunk of change for a down payment (or total payment depending on the package you choose)!

I find it interesting that after a few days there are zero votes for the Disney Hilton Head resort. I guess I may scratch that one off of the contingency list!

I think the issue with that one is there is pretty much no way it would run you over $11K (room rates start at $158 a night). It could be nice in addition to one of the other options though.

You may have gotten it back on your Debit card but definitely not cash if you booked through DCL. Stupid? Many airlines are only giving credits and not refunding to the original payment method. I also buy discounted Disney GCs but I will use them eventually. We have a vacation fund and are okay with "credits". We did not buy the insurance for our flights but even if we had then they don't cover pandemics and so the "credit" United is offering is much better than nothing.

Just to clarify, airlines in the US (or traveling from the US) MUST refund cancelled flights to original payment if requested. They are trying to get people to take credits, but the government has clarified that under US law a cancellation requires a refund if requested. The airlines have tried to keep that quiet, but wanted to make sure everyone knew that was an option.

Why not combine discounted gift cards and your credit card rewards to save even more? If you can get about 5% discount on gift cards and another 5% in rewards, wouldn't that be better than just the rewards? If you end up with a cancelled cruise and are refunded to the gift cards and needed to get cash back, I would imagine that you could resell your cards on one of the gift cards resale sites.

We’ve been to Hilton Head a few times and we LOVE it there, it’s one of our favorite spots. We haven’t stayed at the Disney resort but we did walk around it last year just to check it out. The pool looked nice but I was a bit underwhelmed. It’s on the sound side, not the ocean side so you have to take a shuttle to the beach. We stayed in a nice 2 bedroom condo across the street from the beach and walking distance to Coligny Plaza for a fraction of the price so for me personally it wouldn’t be worth paying a lot more just to get a Disney resort that’s not even on the beach (they do have their own beach club but like I said, you have to take a shuttle to get there!)

That’s just too much work to save 5%.

Book through Costco (that's usually an 8% savings). Pay with a Chase Sapphire Reserve for an additional 3% cash back or a Disney Visa for 2% . 10-11% savings off rack rate.

Book a discounted rate last minute (can save almost 50% sometimes).

This is true. The only thing is many of the earlier flights (March) weren't cancelled, thus they can offer credits not refunds. It's actually more than I thought they would ever offer, considering w/o insurance they didn't have to even offer credits. I'm pleased with banking our spring break flight credits. The flight still went on so they technically didn't owe me a refund at that point.

Same here! I really wanted to do Peru for our family of 5 but the cost!!!

I didn't vote, but we've done all the rounds of Disney properties, including Disney Hilton Head last year for spring break - and we loved it! It was an extended family trip with 3 generations, and everyone really liked the feel of the property, etc. The villas were nicely set up, and all of the hammocks, little outdoor games set around the resort, pool area, etc. were all perfect for our group. It's on the water but not the ocean beach, as someone mentioned, but is a quick drive or free shuttle; we did both on various days. The beach house was really nice too - well appointed, with a pool, ping pong, etc., much nicer than I had been envisioning in advance.

But you aren't going to spend that amount there. There isn't a table service restaurant - just one quick service at the main resort and one quick service at the beach house, and I wouldn't recommend them for 3 meals a day, all week (although we did like it - but it's not an extensive menu). They have a few up-charge activities/excursions. We spent maybe $100 total on a bunch of upcharge crafts for my family (champagne painting thing, Mickey burlap wreaths, etc.). The only paid excursion we kept trying to do was repeatedly canceled due to the tide (kayaking), but it was priced a bit less than a cruise excursion. We did rent bikes and spent a small amount in the gift shop. But that's pretty much it.

Long story short, if you were going to split the money into multiple trips, I'd keep it as an option. We'd go back there in a heartbeat, except it's kind of hard to get to if you can't drive. None of us are on the east coast. It's a lot more low-key than Aulani.
