I'm freaking out just a little... **DOC UPDATE pg 5

My 14yr old daughter also has extensive Morphea on her face, neck, belly and back. I freaked at the Scleroderma diagnosis and like you ran to the internet. She sees a pediatric rheumatologist as well as a dermatologist. They initially did a ton of bloodwork to confirm as well as rule out things like lupus. She is on very aggresive treatment right now and is on prednisone as well as a drug called methotrexate and topical creams and she is tanning 3 times a week. The nearest light therapy bed is 2 hours away so we're trying this route first. The dermatologist said he spends 99% of his time telling people to stay out of the sun but for morphea it's a way to slow it down.
She has routine bloodwork to monitor her organs because of the meds but the sad thing is there is no cure only control. The drs told me it's very very rare for this to turn into the bad kind of scheroderma.

One site I like is http://sclero.org/medical/about-sd/types/localized/morphea/rare-types/a-to-z.html#artefacta It helps explain the different types of morphea. Hang in there and try not to worry! It can be treated and is not life threatening and looks like you caught it pretty early with only one spot. Hugs!!

Oh, how frightening! Of course you're freaking out, this is your baby! I remember your post too about her little dimple. It seriously could be absolutley nothing to worry about. We had a health scare at my DD6's annual check-up when our pediatrician heard a 'weird' heart sound. I totally freaked, looked it up online and scared the living daylights out of myself. It turned out to be benign thank God! But until all her testing was done, I was convinced it was going to be something awful. Moms worry, it comes with the territory doesn't it? Please don't read about signs and symptoms online. If you look hard enough, you'd be able to diagnose yourself with something awful! Let the specialist examine her, do whatever tests they need and go from there. Like my DH says, don't put the cart before the horse. Which of course means don't start worrying about something that may not be. I'll be thinking about your little girl, she's adorable!:goodvibes

Happened to us to - pediatrician thinks it's something so we are referred to specialists who do millions of tests that all come back negative. Of course, it could have been something terrible which is why we always check. But it turned out to be completely nothing.

Hang in there! :grouphug:

Just want to add my :hug:. You have been given some good advice and information on this thread. Congrats on the new baby!:wizard:

We too have been through this. I pray for peace for you while you wait out the process. And of course for a happy diagnosis.

Hugs, prayers, and luck. My DH is a pediatric dentist, and when he was in dental school there was a saying for any pathology they found, and he still says it today: Common Things Happen Commonly. By this he means that don't assume you have the rare, awful thing. Usually, it turns out to be the common, treatable or benign thing. So keep that in mind (I know it's hard when it's your baby, but it does help put things in perspective!)

Hi Vettechicklet99 - Yes, I have localized scleroderma. Mine is also less jagged but does look very similar to this one.

I hope that you get some good news soon. My 11 year old DD has trouble with her skin all of the time. We deal with eczema year round, but it's worse in the winter. About 2 years ago she had a place on her leg that looked like a bruise, but it would not go away. Her doctor said it could be something, I can't remember now what he said, but it was bad. I came home & got online. It was the worst thing that I could have done. I was all worked up. We got her in to an expert and they checked it & ran some test on the skin sample and it came back fine. I worried for nothing.

I guess what I'm trying to say is just calm down, everything will be fine.

That's what we intially thought it was. It's right in the spot she normally gets her shots. But the shot she had the month before was not in that exact spot. Her two-year shots were given 4 monts before this showed up. How long did it take for yours to show up?

I got a 'scar' after getting a shot - only time it's ever happened - but it looked a lot like that. It took several months for it to develop. By the time my DH noticed it I didnt even remember having had a shot...went to the dermatologist and she called it some 'fancy' name (basically is a scar that develops w/extra tissue in it). It has never faded like most scars do either.

I will keep you and your sweet baby in my thoughts - - stuff like this REALLY sucks. Hopefully, the specialist can get you in QUICKLY...the waiting can be the hardest part (and hopefully, it IS the hardest part and it will soon be all over.)

I didn't read thru the entire thread, but I agree with the PP who said don't look on the internet.
Did you get an appt with a Derm? I would asap for your own piece of mind.
the chances are greater that it is completely harmless, but its best to get it checked out.
will be thinking of you both:hug:

I would guess I originally noticed it about 3 months after? Then it got worse for a while.

If it's in the spot where she gets her shots I would think that is too much of a coincidence not to be related. I hope it is all figured out soon! :goodvibes

That's what we are hoping for!

Still waiting to hear from the doctor. Thanks for all the kind words. We are feeling much better today.

Ok, don't laugh I learned this first on DIS-but have you tried Head and Shoulders shampoo on the eczema? Our boys get eczema and it works better than anything else we have ever tried. It stings some the first time or two but if she can deal with that for a few seconds it really does help!!!

:hug:I know the worst part is the waiting. He said it was "beyond his area" meaning he is just stabbing in the dark on his guess on her condition.

I hope you get much better news after seeing the dermatologist. (I would be making my own appointment by the way= not waiting for the pediatrician to talk to one)

I hope you get answers quickly!

I agree, I also would not wait....call a dermatologist ASAP.

Hoping you have gotten an appt. Waiting is so tough. After seeing this thread I started to wonder about this patch of skin on my thumb that no matter what i do is always hard, dry and peeling and tight...trying Vitamin E oil now. Guess I will mention it to dr. WOuldn't think much of it but when I had to get an IV last month nurse had a tough time and said "Wow, your skin is so hard." I already have other autoimmune issues, so just making me think. Hoping all is fine for your little one.

I have never heard of that before but I am willing to try anything. We have a cream that we use to clear it up but it still takes a while. Sometimes we even have to wrap it at night. It's crazy.

I've never heard of this before. Do you use this as a body wash or as a lotion that you don't wash off? My DH suffers from eczema and I'd love to find something that makes him more comfortable!
