I went to California last weekend to visit by brother & sil and somehow threw out my back! (probably a combo of sitting for hours in airplane seats and gardening at their house)

I haven't excercised for almost a week and I miss being able to move comfortably!

Help....

Hey Aurora,

Other than throwing your back out, I hope you had a good week and enjoyed visiting family.

If your back has been out for a week, you might want to call your doctor. Maybe you can get something for your pain or a referral to a chiropractor.

Be careful with the exercising while your back still hurts.

I'll keep you in my thoughts.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Sue

I'm sorry your back is out of wack! But it shouldn't take too long to get your back so you feel comfrotable. Please do go see a chiropractor! it will help!

I recently picked up a book on back pain in the doctor's office. One of the things that I've found helps mine feel better when I've strained it is laying in one of the "positions of rest" from the book. You lay on your back on the floor near a low table or ottoman. Put a thin pillow under your head if you need one, and also a thin one under your tush to help get the position right. You want to get your legs elevated so your thighs are in a 90 degree angle to the floor, and your calves should be parallel to the floor, your body is kind of in a z shape and it is a very relaxing pose one you get there, it takes so much stress off your back and the muscles.

Hugs, Aurora!! I hope you feel better soon, it is no fun having a bad back! :( Please see a doctor if it doesn't get better!!

Yep, been there! I was in a car accident that forced all the fluid out of my lower 3 discs- now my discs are degenerating and boy is that painful! But, thank God I found some relief. A pain specialist I called on (when I was in sales) gave me 4 exercises to do 2x a day- I've been doing them religiously since and have not had one back relapse yet!! I also found that activity was much better than inactivity - once I started trying to walk and warm those muscles they felt better.
If you can, your doctor might rx some physical therapy- the electric stimulation is AWESOME but temporary. It turns out most of my back spasms were caused by my hamstrings being tight (i.e. long plane rides etc.) so the exercises I do really loosen up the hamstring which relieves pressure on your lower back. First I would rule out a disc problem (bulging, ruptured etc.) but more than 80% of back pain is muscle related. Here are the exercises that saved me...
1. On your back with your knees bent, raise or have someone raise one leg keeping your knee slightly bent and have that person or you can use a towel around your foot to pull that straightened leg towards your head. Once you get good at this- try and stretch the other leg to the ground as you pull this one up- switch sides.

2. on your back with both knees bent, cross your left foot so your ankle is resting on your right knee. use your hands to pull your right leg into your chest. switch legs and repeat on other side.

3. in the same position as above, with one of your feet on the ground and the other one resting on your knee, outstretch your arms and slowly lower your foot that's raised to the opposite side, this also stretches your back and repeat with the other side.

4.sitting up with legs straight in front of you, bend your left leg and place your left foot to the right of your right knee. Take your right hand and stretch behind you with your left hand on your knee trying to twist your torso- this lengthens your back muscles. Repeat the other side.

I wish I could draw you a picture- I've used these exercises with so many people and they are amazed at the difference and lack of back pain. I suffered for 4 years and was facing surgery- it's been 4 years since I've had an ER visit and I am so thankful!!

Here's to a speedy recovery- don't worry about your diet/exercise- that will all come back with time- just work on feeling better soon!!

Eeeek!

Sending quick healing PD your way! Don't try to exercise until your back is better! You don't want to end up making it worse!!!!! Right now just be good to yourself. Don't worry because worrying won't heal your back any faster. Just stick to your healthy eating plan and rest, rest, rest!!!!!

You'll be feeling better in no time and then it will be SAFE for you to exercise again!!! Take care of yourself! xo

Thanks everyone for sending me some healing energy.

I am feeling better (I can now move without wincing and have stopped taking more than 2 ibuprofen at a time). Thanks for the exercises! My DH has a bad back so I'm very familiar with them - I started doing them about 3 days ago.

It was just dumb how it happened - I felt a twinge while gardening and kept going and unfortunately paid the price...

If I'm still in pain by Monday, I will certainly see a Dr. and thanks again for lifting my spirits!

You just take care of yourself and get better! You can start back when your body is ready. :)

(((hugs)))

Take care of yourself... I am still nursing my ankle from a bad sprain, so I know how you feel...but you can do it...just rest and roll around in the pixie dust we are all sending you!!!

{{{{HUGS}}}}

Hope you feel better soon!
