I'm concerned that DH and I are doomed.....

I think DH and are are very likely to get H1N1. We have a trip scheduled in a couple weeks to go to DH's Granny's 90th birthday party (plane trip).

DH will be going to Arizona to do an Ironman Triathlon a couple weeks after that (another plane trip)

And we are going to WDW in a little over a month (yet another plane trip).

I'm wondering if we are going to be able to avoid it.

I give us a pretty much zero chance of getting the vaccine before we go as we aren't in any of the designated groups.

We're going to do our best to follow of the usual sanitary precautions but I'm sure I'm going to forget and rub my eye or something.

At least I can take comfort in the likelihood of either of us having any compliciations from it are extremely low if not non-existent. However, it really would suck to have to deal with it with everything else we're trying to do.

Well, the good news is (and I think I heard that the CDC has said this), the H1N1 is supposed to be peaking now and through late October. After that, it will start dropping off. It will be around but not like it has been. All flu bugs go through a bell curve of infection and we are at the top or approaching it right now.

Maybe by the time your trips are in full swing, it will be on the downside. At that point, you will just have seasonal flu to deal with!

Don't know if this will make you feel any better, but youngest DD and I had it, and rest assured it only lasts 3 to 4 days. At least it did for us. If you are lucky those several days will be during the time you can afford it, and not due to be somewhere. Crossing fingers for you. :thumbsup2

I really hope you all do not get it and can stay healthy.

I also want to wish your DH good luck at the Ironman race. DH did Ironman Loisville last year and plans on doing another one soon. He seriously was looking at Arizona but I'm thinking he might go with Panama City so he can drive instead of flying (he would rather not ship the bike). Has your DH done one before? Are you going? Please wish him luck and also let us know what he thinks of Arizona. We talked to someone last year at WDW during the marathon weekend whose son had done Arizona.
I know your DH has put alot of hours in training for this race and I hope he can stay healthy to feel good while doing it. It is exhausting enough to do w/o added in a fever or cough or something.

Self fulfilling prophecy? ;)

I just took a trip cross country, 6 hour flight each way. :headache: Two very full flights. :crowded::scared::crazy2::crowded: So I know how you feel. I was worried. I actually wanted to be one of those crazies who wore a face mask. But, I didn't. I took Airborne tablets instead, (I swear by those! :thumbsup2) and made sure I took all my vitamin & supplements. I did get a little run down, but I did not get the swine flu. :cool1:

If I had all those things coming up, I'd be hoping I would get it now and get it overwith. So y'all just do what we did when we were little and the chicken pox was going around:

Spend as much time with the chicken pox kid as you can. :)

LOL! My mom did that to me - made me go play w/ my friends little brother, which I thought was pretty weird....then I got the Pox!

Good luck OP...you really might want to consider the masks on the plane (I'd hate to do it too, but at this point w/ the amount you have going on...they DO provide some amount of protection.:thumbsup2)

I'm in the apparent age range that is more at-risk to contract H1N1. I just took a plane from New York to Phoenix, and spent two weeks in Phoenix, Disneyland, Los Angeles, & Las Vegas, and then flew from Phoenix back to New York. I don't wash my hands or use hand sanitizer as often as I should. I'm not sick, not even a little bit. You'll be fine.

This Ironman in Arizona will be his tenth Ironman triathlon. He did C'oure d'Alene and Wisconsin earlier this year. He's done Arizona every year since it started. It's a hard course and when it was in April, the weather was BRUTAL. Fortunately, we're in south Texas so it wasn't really anything he wasn't used to. But they moved it to November this year and the weather should be much, much nicer. I generally don't travel with him to his triathlon's. It gets expensive and he has more vacation time from work than I do.

However, if he manages to squeak out a spot to the world championships in Hawaii, you can bet your bippy I'll be going to that one.

Wear a mask and gloves. Take wipes. They will call you "Monk' but you may stay healthy.

I didn't go as far during our Winter here as masks and gloves, but I did however, always carry some anti-bacterial hand cleaner and used it everytime I sat down to eat.

I'd advise that strongly.

If one of you does come down with it, see if your doc will give you BOTH Tamiflu. My son had H1N1 nearly 3 weeks ago and really suffered for several days and missed a week of school...he did not have Tamiflu. My daughter came down with it this week...she is under age 4, so her doc gave her Tamiflu within hours of her symptoms appearing, and she did not have to suffer anywhere near as much or as long as my son did.

The morning after my daughter got sick, my husband was getting ready for work, and boom....started feeling bad, and within minutes started getting a bad headache and had a high temp. When they say it comes on fast, they really mean it...so you will KNOW if you have it! He called our doc, and he gave my husband Tamiflu AND he wrote a prescription for me as well to prevent me from getting it since I had two household members who were sick with it.

I should add that I am very weary of taking medications...I prefer not to take anything unless I have to, and I am even more picky about what I give my children. But after seeing how sick my son got and how disrupted our very busy lives were for so long, I was more than happy to have the Tamiflu for my daughter, husband, and myself. Some people are afraid of the side effects, but our doctors and our pharmacist assured us that severe side effects are very, very rare. So far none of us have had a single side effect from taking it, not even the more common one of having an upset stomach.

Of course not all doctors will prescribe it unless you are in a high risk group, but it is worth it to ask. And VERY important...you want to get it asap after your symptoms start. They say within 48 hours, but my daughter and my husband got Tamiflu into their systems less than 8 hours after their symptoms started, and I believe it made a HUGE difference in the severity and length of their illness.
