Illuminations question

Has anyone ever just showed up at the dock where the Illuminations cruises take off and finagled their way on by sharing the cost of the cruise with another party that has extra room? I'm thinking about doing this for our Spring Break trip in about a week.

I am not sure how this works, but we shared a cruise last month and the boat next to us had 1 person. The boat was reserved for gold package and they said they never know how many they will get. I wonder if you can buy your way onto that?
