Illuminations ending rumor- credible or nah?

Remember...the barges are there by choice...not lack of time/desire/funds to build permanent banks in the lagoon.

Fireworks sound cute..like something in aisle 4 at toys r us...

But they are basically a coctail of gunpowder, dynamite, nice caustic chemicals, and industrial pigments...

They spend all day repacking those tubes on the barges and at the artillery range behind the "safety" building and near the roundhouse north of Magic kingdom...

They don't want that stuff being done in the middle of a park...no way if it can be avoided.

Say something were to happen...and some pyro tech's hand gets blown off and goes flying 300 feet into the showcase at 4:30?

Can you imagine the consequences? If it landed in Canada...it could stop the stampede on Le cellier temporarily...and hold people back from the most mediocre quality/highest prices USDA subprime steaks on earth...

Too
Much of a risk.
No doubt about any of what you said above. Look towards WoC, RoL, and Disney Dreams where Disney has reduced or even eliminated fireworks from their nighttime spectaculars. They then installed permanent infrastructure for shows. Something tells me there's less liability in lasers, LEDs, and Fountains...

Of course, WSL is one of the most horrible underwater environments in a Disney Park (about as far away from DCA's paved cement lagoon as you can get). Though that isn't stopping them with RoL so you never know.

The other problem with implementing some of the WoC technologies would also include viewing angles with projections. Maybe they could introduce viewing zones? I don't think they want to do that.

It will be interesting seeing what they do...

I saw illuminations 2000 very early in its run - I think December 98...

I saw it at 12:00 on 1/1/2000...when they had all those light towers and "security" everywhere because they thought the power was gonna go out...

Had a dessert party there...after my EPCOT wedding and EPCOT reception...

Long before they were sold by the dozens...

I can amaze my kids by describing the type and location in the sky of each firework according to the music...with my back turned and/or eyes closed...

It's been well over a hundred times I think... And I never worked in EPCOT.

That's the backstory for this opinion:
It needs to go...still probably the best fireworks display ever in Florida...but still needs to go. 17 years is ridiculous for anything of this type.
100% I will miss that soundtrack though...

Indeed. Apparently it's all been TDO doing the upgrades to the current show. As we know, sometimes local spends money on things just as Burbank is ready to fork over the serious dough.

If I had to hazard a guess it would be 2017 or after when they start work. Knocking Illuminations offline before ROL would mean there's only one nighttime spectacular on property (Fantasmic is on the edge of qualifying). Bad for business. I see them using the new ROL as cover, they could take Illuminations offline for a few months to force people into Animal Kingdom and keep the nightlife going.
What is TDO and ROL?

No doubt...as they've shown over the last 15 years...they have no problem decreasing the length and complexity of fireworks displays...due to a huge cost.

You can't fault that...except they did not do that in the 80's and 90's... Where they had far lesson money to play with.

It's just one of those subtle, unfortunate things...it was never micromanaged or cost accounted...it was just something management took pride in as something "we do"

That has gone the way of the dodo

What is TDO and ROL?

TDO is "team Disney Orlando"... The overal managers at wdw...they have a "large" budget...but cannot really do anything in regards to capital investment

Rol is "rivers of light". The new nighttime show being installed at animal kingdom for next year

In case you see it WOC is "world of color"...the popular show at California adventure that debuted several years ago

Alphabet soup

The new Disneyland forever show will be shorter than the previous show at Disneyland... But then again what this show will entail might make the shorter length worth it.

I know WOC but only because I've been planning our first DL trip. I know most of the accronyms but these are new. Well I'm very excited for ROL! I didn't know that was the name for it.

I hope that Illuminations: Reflections of Earth does not go away. It's my absolute favorite fireworks show at WDW and the ONLY one that gets applause when it completes every night. I also love the soundtrack and would miss it.

Well like others have said its old things don't last forever

The show was better when I saw it in 92 on my first trip to WDW. The lasers, fountains, lighting the countries and announcing each country with the fireworks. The show was was better and had more elements to it.

Absolutely, the show was much better back then. I don't even care for it much now, and I really want to enjoy it but every time I think "that wasn't that amazing".

Have to agree with you too. I was disappointed the first time I saw Reflections of Earth.

Another one who misses the prior rendition. That one was a must do on every trip. This one not so much. We go every year and last saw itin 2012. Probably won't see it this year either.

I still like Illuminations, but it was much better in the early days.

I don't know if this has any effect on the speculation here, but my daughter is a dancer and just saw the Disney is auditioning for dancers for a new parade in Epcot. Might they be putting in an evening parade instead of Illum, or while they re-work Illum? I know that ToD was a crowd-control fiasco, but it ran for several years. They could probably do something similar while restating the evening show.

Well I can't see them doing a parade instead of illuminations so

Some type of day parade during the day would be great! Parade around WS

Love Illuminations, but WOC type would also be amazing.

Dang hard to beat some good ole loud fireworks though-hope they can implement plenty if they do switch.

I wish they would do some type of projection show on SE. That would be amazing but crowds around the ball would be horrendous!

I think we will see a WoC look alike or at least some of the same tech in RoL in AK when it opens.
