Illness on Wonder

Just returned from the 2/18-2/21 Wonder Cruise. I was confined to my room starting at about 3:00 yesterday afternoon due to being very very ill. We went to Castaway and I started to feel very sick to my stomach. I left the island early (that is how I knew I was really sick, since that is my favorite place in the whole world). I began throwing up around 6:00pm and it lasted until about 12:30 that night.

We just got back from Wonder boarded on 2/28. 4 out of 5 got ill. Throwing up and all. It lasted 24 - 48 hours. Cabin number 8542. We also saw other children throwing up at Castaway Cay.

:scared1: Wow looks like we dodged a bullet! We sailed the Wonder Feb 21-25 on Deck 2, and managed to avoid any GI illness (though DD and I both came home with cough/upper respiratory ick). We saw a couple of "protein spills" over the 4 days, but there weren't any extra precautions taken by the cast/crew that we observed. We did head into port canaveral early (11PM instead of 5AM), some say for a very sick child/infant--I wonder if they also had the GI bug?

Anyway, hope you're all feeling better soon!

I definately felt sorry for the little girl who threw up all the way up the stairs at the show on the 2/18 cruise. We had to leave after the dancers came up the stairs and spread it around (I don't know why they were taking so long to clean it..they knew about it, as the person in front of us left early and we heard him telling an usher). The smell got to be a bit much.
My hubby didn't start getting ill, until the second part of our b2b, on the 24th but was OK by the 26th..just eating light. He was one sick person. I managed to stay well until the 28th (he's such a sharing person). Mine lasted longer than his. I was sick up til the 3rd. We flew home the fourth, so I missed a big chunk of my vacation. I"m still eating light. I've never had the flu or a virus so I have nothing to compare it too, but I never want it again.

We were on the 2/28 too. I didn't see anyone getting sick, but both myself and my granddauther had bouts of stomach pain and nausea. I contributed it to either the food we ate or possibly the rough seas we were experiencing. Mine was almost immediately after dinner (which makes me think it was the food - fish) but bovine and chicken noodle soup from room service solved the problem. The next day when the seas were worse, late at night my granddauther experienced the same problem. I think it was possibly a combination of what we ate and the rocky seas. We were on deck 7.

I am glad I did not witness the little girl getting sick. Poor thing. But I don't do well with other people's vomit!

Sorry to hear that you ended up with the virus. I did not pass it on to my friend that went on the cruise with me! Thank goodness. I don't think her husband would have liked if I sent her home with the stomach flu!

I am very late in posting this. But, wanted to let you know....
We finally got everything thru the system! It took a couple of weeks of sending stuff back and forth. The people I worked with were very courteous and professional.
ONE TIP: to avoid losing any of your coverage - AS SOON AS YOU FEEL ILL REPORT TO MEDICAL. My husband got sick during the night Friday night, but didn't go to medical until mid morning Saturday. So, we only got a portion of his sick time covered. If he had gone Friday night, he would have gotten his entire sick time covered. The clock starts when you report to medical. And even if they are closed, they page someone to meet you there and start the clock. That's how I got the girls covered from Saturday night to Sunday.
Looking forward to our next cruise.....:)

We traveled on the Wonder 2/26-3/4 and my daughter became sick on Thur., ending up throwing up that night. She felt so much better, we hoped it was the 24 hour bug. She didn't feel so bad the rest of the trip, but stayed in the room most of the rest of the time due to her head hurting from the sound of the activities going on in the ship. When she seemed her worse we went to the medical center to find they had really odd hours (open in the morning and evening only) so figured we would only call if she seemed to get worse. Her symptoms, in addition to the ill tummy on the first day, were achy head, sore throat, coughing.

The gal who took care of our room was off sick most of the cruise, and now I wish I had asked what her symptoms were.

The last night of the cruise my husband started to feel lightly nauseated and a sore throat coming on. By morning he was not able to eat due to stomach upset, mild diarrhea, achy body and sore throat. This was our travel day home. As we were leaving Grandpa (Grandma and Grandpa were on the trip with us) was also showing symptoms.

It's been a little over a week since we got home and all 6 in our family are sick at one level or another, and Grandpa (lives in CA) is also sick with this thing. Whatever we have has manifest itself differently in each of us. My husband developed laryngitis, and a leaky eye... one of my daughter's developed plugged ears and red leaky eyes, but all of us share extremely sore swollen throats, cough, and head congestion that just won't go away. The daughter who was sick on the ship is still fighting symptoms, coughing, congestion and low energy nearing two weeks after becoming ill on the ship. Another daughter has been experiencing a mild sore throat until last night, symptoms seem to be becoming more intense for her now.

What we have must be fairly contagious as Grandpa #2 picked us up at the airport and brought us home. Three days later he had the exact same symptoms as my husband.

Out of all the reports here, it looks like most people got some form of stomach bug that was fairly short lived, with the exception of one person reporting head congestion.

Aside from all this, this was our first cruise and it was AWESOME! All four kids (ages 9-18) can't wait to go again.

My bold above - are you referring to this thread? If so, it is from 2010 and not a current report of illness on the Wonder. I was on your same cruise and no one in our family got sick and I also did not see anyone on the ship that was sick. All in all I felt it was a healthy cruise. But it is a very large ship and my experience could be very different than others.

Sorry that you all got so sick, I guess the bright side is that it was for the most part after your trip so you at least got to enjoy it a bit :goodvibes

Glad to hear you had a good cruise, we did as well. Loved it!!

I meant through the thread... I see that it started in 2010, but that a few people gave reports on the January, February and then this first week's cruise too. I guess I was just trying to figure out if the symptoms we have relate with any others, but that anyone recently or prior had different symptoms, with the exception of my daughter's first day.

We noticed a few "clean ups" coming out of the theater and then in one of the restaurants. A lady in the elevator mentioned she walked by a room where the attendants were cleaning up throw up. I kind of assume, with so many on board in a mostly enclosed space, it would be rare for there not to be someone who gets sick. Overall, I do think it was okay though. I am glad your family did not get sick.

Yes, my daughter was very glad it happened when it did and that she didn't miss out on the whole cruise. She has such a sweet spirit about it. We were also very blessed by our dinner staff who made sure I had a hot dish of food to take her at dinner time, since she wasn't able to make it to dinner with us. They took such good care of us.

OH GEE! You are right... this who thread was from 2010... for some reason I thought the last posts said 2012... UGH! Can I blame it on being sick? LOL!!! Sorry about that.

After seeing this I am so glad I have vacation insurance (i got it through DCL so it better cover this)

I am staying on Deck 6 when I sail to Alaska in July! Should I try to move my room?! Starting to panic a bit here after reading all the deck 6 sicknesses

On Sunday he wasn't physically ill anymore, but he was totally wiped out from the whole ordeal. We were thinking it was possibly food poisoning. We felt that if it was Norwalk, at least ONE other person in our party would most likely have gotten it (even with all the handwashing we did).

Not necessarily, have heard of a few instances of Norwalk (not on a ship) where not all family members got it.

The ships do what they can, but a virus can spread pretty rapidly when everyone's in such close quarters. This is a resurrected thread, but this year there were some outbreaks aboard Princess ships apparently.

The outbreak you are reading about was in 2010, even if it was now they would clean the ship long before July.

I feel the need to respond.

Our very first cruise was a Disney Cruise in 2009. Our youngest daughter got sick on the second day we proceeded to medicialand was quarantined 48 hours. Unfortunate considering we know our daughters health and is was a combination of ship motion, excitement and rich food but understand that any Cruise has to protect the passengers. I will say Disney went OVERBOARD to ensure our stay in the stateroom was comfortable and everyone onboard asked us how she was the next two days. The second day they did aloow her of the ship but we could not do our planned Disney Excursion.

OK this is where I now rant....... We saw many kids and a few adults who obviously were sick. We heard parents talking to their kids about how much they threw up as they sit beside them and cough all over. With a confined ship it is very easy for somethng to spread. Do the PROPER thing snd report to medicial, why let your own sellfiness ruin someone else vacation. You can always book another cruise (like we did)

ok rant off........

it is aways unfortunate to get sick on holidays but things do happen.

cheers
:goofy:

Do you have to report to medical. My DS's both had the stomach bug on our recent cruise and we kept them quarantined in the room for 24 hours after they FINISHED throwing up(so basically they were both in the room for almost 2 days). We had 8 people in our party and they were the only two that got sick. We let our stateroom hostess know that we had two sick children and also spoke to guest services, but didn't feel the need for medical attention.

If you have trip insurance that covers interruption, then by going to medical and getting a diagnosis that also states the child is quarantined, you can normally file for $$ back for the timeframe of the quarantine. I believe most insurance companies will require that info from a doctor vice on the word of the parent or sick person.

If it is a child, then normally the refund covers the child and an adult-caregiver. Of course, there is a small cost to visit medical, but (a) that might be covered by health insurance, and (b) it is likely less than what you'd get back in terms of cruise fare if there is indeed a quarantine situation.

Since you notified the Stateroom Hostess and GS, they will have notified the MC so they can keep track of the amount of any Guest's affect by an outbreak.
It is asked that you do call the MC yourself should anyone in your party feel ill though.

I have not heard much rumblings about sickness in the last couple of weeks.

It seems to me that this is more prevelent during Dec, Jan & Feb.

Does anyone else notice that pattern? We're cruising in May and hope that this type of thing is more seasonal - with people getting the ful during the winter months.
