Illness on Wonder

I would not have known about trying this if I had not come to the boards for a completely different reason - to find the contact number for buying the H2O products and a t-shirt my DD wanted but we didn't get to buy due to the quarantine.
While here, I started reading this thread and saw a couple of mentions of trying to get reimbursed for the quarantined time. So, I called Disney, they sent me to Access America/800-573-5665, the insurance company. They started the process, sent me e-forms for claims, and told me to get documentation from medical onboard. So, I called Disney back. They gave me contact info for Vanter Services/703-236-2690 - the company that contracts for med services on the Wonder. By then, it was after 5:30 yesterday and the office was closed. I will try again this morning.
None of the people I spoke with seemed to think any of this was out of the ordinary. They were all very empathetic and sympathetic.
So, maybe I have a shot at it.

I haven't claimed through the DCL insurance, but did submit a claim on our Travelex insurance last April. Since DS was quarantined for two days, they paid two days of his cruise fare and two days of one adult fare, since one of us had to be in the cabin with him. They were very quick - received the check about 7 - 10 days after I mailed in the paperwork.

We were on the Jan 10-14 sailing and of course everything was not self-serve. I was at the spa for a treatment and decided to ask a few questions and this is what I was told... the cruise before us had a lot of sick people and they were concerned because it was starting to hit the crew members. The measures they were taking were not just precautionary steps, it was to avoid having to cancel any future cruises and take the ship out to sea to let the bug run it's course. No one in our party (11 of us) ended up getting sick but we did see a few kids not looking so hot.

I didn't read the whole thread, just skimmed..

But we were on the Wonder the second week of December and our last night, our DD4 got really sick and threw up on the table at Triton's during the last night's goodbye ceremoney of the serving staff. We quickly used the table cloth and wrapped it...but I felt awful exposing others...I had NO idea she didn't feel good. Then she threw up all night. We went to Vero Beach the next night and DD10 threw up all night. The remaining 4 of us did not get sick. A couple of days later 4 of us sailed the Ruby Princess and came home fine.

However, I am thinking it might have to do with travel itself, especially air travel. I've come home with colds from WDW (hot, then air conditioning, then back home in autum!) and plane travel is just gross. I would be more likely to believe nasties develop because of plane travel as opposed to the Wonder...I've been on three and CMs are constantly cleaning. Of course, any time you get a tight space situation like a cruise ship, it could happen, but the Wonder is as clean as the Carnival Dream was its very first day in port in the US...as clean as a new ship, if that didn't make sense (it is late, and I am rambling

I'm so thankful that I read this post before we went on our 3 night Wonder cruise Jan 21-24. Just got back home this afternoon and nobody is sick! And yes, we were on the 6th floor....
I bought a can of Lysol and sprayed down everything in the room immediately upon entering. I also made sure our 6 year old daughter washed and washed her hands several times a day and as of now..... we're in the clear. Thanks DISers for the tips. I'm sure I wouldn't have been this over the top cautious had it not been for you guys, and we could possibly have gotten the "bug" as a result.

What size bottle did u bring? Do they have travel size lysol?

I followed this thread very closely before my cruises on 2/4 and 2/7 (back to back), as I was traveling with a 3 and 5 year old.

On the Wonder, I saw 1 throw-up at the theater on the 3 day and 1 throw-up outside Tritons on the 4 day--but that's it. All buffets were self-serve. The wipes provided on the ship say "antimicrobial", which I think is key to killing the virus. If you follow recommendations for hand sanitizer (provided a few pages back) they are probably antimicrobial (I purchased and always used the one from Target). I DO stress washing your hands often and wiping down your tables. But, we didn't get sick. I did restrict the times my kids went in the pool and ate at buffets. Getting sick wasn't worth the risk to me, plus they swam at the beach and in Disney.

I also went to Disney, where I saw the illness even more. 1 throw-up at AK, 1 at MK, and 1 on a bus. Worse than what I've seen on other recent trips. So, keep your hands clean and be careful.

We just got off the Wonder on 2/11 we did the four day. We have officially been home 48 hours and my son is sick, throwing up. However, I dont think he got it on the boat, we left the boat on Thursday 2/11 at 830am, its 2/13 at 11pm and he just hurled, so it had to be somewhere else.

We just got home from the 2/14-2/18 cruise on the wonder. I did not see anyone get sick. No one in our party got sick (8 people). After reading this thread, I did bring sanitizing spray that I used 3 or 4 times in our room on all the door and drawer handles, light switches, toilet flush button, etc. We weren't totally nuts about everyone washing their hands all the time, just vacation as usual. And, the kids did go in the Mickey pool a couple times. The buffets were self-serve. They did pass out wipes before any and EVERY meal. So, it was smooth sailing for us!

Just returned from the 2/18-2/21 Wonder Cruise. I was confined to my room starting at about 3:00 yesterday afternoon due to being very very ill. We went to Castaway and I started to feel very sick to my stomach. I left the island early (that is how I knew I was really sick, since that is my favorite place in the whole world). I began throwing up around 6:00pm and it lasted until about 12:30 that night. I am still feeling a bit sick to my stomach and run down, but I think it was more of a 24 hour bug. Not a great way to spend the last night of your cruise. I went to the medical center. They gave me meds and that was it. I did not even see the doctor. I hope no one else EVER gets this!

What is the medical center like? Is it open 24/7? You said they gave you meds, but who gave them to you if you didn't see a dr.?? A nurse maybe or just a CM? What do you suppose would happen if I needed to get meds (like cold meds or Advil, simple things) for myself or my family. Will they have it on hand? How much did they charge you for the meds? Is it better for me to try to pack what we MAY need... (I'm a confirmed member of "overpackers anonymous" and I'm trying to control myself this trip. I mean we'll only be gone 3 nights... just spazzing out reading this....

It was a big bummer! I stayed home an extra day from work today so I could get my strength back.

The medical center seemed pretty worthless actually. I called down and told them what was wrong with me. The CM said "we close in 15 minutes so you better hurry up and get here." (I guess they close at 730. So if you get sick after that too bad). I walked in and he handed me meds over the counter. One was Imodium and the other was something for nausea and vomiting. I did not see the doctor nor did they check my temp or anything.

I think it is pretty easy to get meds on board. They had a few samples sitting out. I would not worry too much about bringing a bunch of meds on board.

I have been on 9 cruises and this is the first one I have gotten sick.

If you are really ill, you can call the medical emergency number and they may meet you at the medical center. When we were on the Magic last April, our DS came down with the dreaded noro virus. We called the emergency number at 4:30 in the morning and a nurse met us at the center. She gave him an injection to stop the vomiting and we went back for a consult with the Dr. later that morning. After hearing the symptoms and how DS felt, he diagnosed it as noro. Poor DS was quarantined for 48 hours, but didn't feel like leaving the room anyway. Our trip interruption insurance did pay for 2 days of his cruise fare and 2 days of one adult fare..

Bottom line is..... don't be afraid to call the emergency number, just because the center is not officially open.

I wish I would have known that. A shot to stop the vomiting would have been amazing!!! After looking up the symptoms I am pretty sure that is what I had. They did not even ask or tell me to stay in the room. They just told me to eat bland food and wash my hands. Maybe because we were getting off the ship the next day. Thanks for the info! Hopefully I won't ever need to use it, but it is good to know!!

We just got back from Wonder boarded on 2/28. 4 out of 5 got ill. Throwing up and all. It lasted 24 - 48 hours. Cabin number 8542. We also saw other children throwing up at Castaway Cay.

There is a nasty stomach virus going around here right now and we are all thanking the heavens none of us have it. If a virus is as persistent and contagious as this one is, it doesn't matter whether you are on a ship or not - all is takes is one contact with a person in an airport, hotel, whatever. I think this has just been a VERY bad year for both snow and viruses and I'm crossing my fingers next winter will be better!

I am thinking the first thing I do is spray all surfaces in my cabin down with lysol....really dont want anyone getting sick.
