Illness on Wonder

I was also on the Jan 10-14th Wonder sailing with my parents, DH and DS1 and we were not affected at all by this illness and had no idea that there was any issue until I came on here today to find out why we were being served at all the buffets. We had cruised Disney before and were wondering if Disney changed things. They definitely were proactive however because they started serving us immediately which I must admit we found extremely annoying.

We were on deck 2 and never noticed or heard of illnesses... so there is still a good chance that all your future cruisers can cruise and not have problems!

A phenolic environmental disinfectant (Lysol® or Pinesol®) may be effective, but may require a concentration of 2-4X the manufacturer’s recommendation. The use of this product at the higher concentration may
pose a significant health risk to children, workers, pets or yourself. Use extreme caution when using these products. Please read the manufacturer’s warning.

Here is a list from the CDC on what products DO kill the norovirus:
http://www.epa.gov/oppad001/list_g_norovirus.pdf

Normal household lysol and household clorox wipes are not on the list. (medical grade clorox wipes are - I'm guessing the actually have clorox in them unlike the household stuff)

Thanks for the list... household bleach is made from sodium hypochlorite, which I notice *is* on the list as an "active ingredient" in a few of the products.

Other active ingredients listed are: ammonium chloride, hydrogen peroxide, and citric acid. I would think any product with one of these four "active ingredients" would be effective.

Going to be on the wonder 1/21. Just curious if there are any illness's to report from those just back.

We were on the Wonder 01/10 - 01/14, both of my young daughters, ages 2 & 4 caught this terrible virus, visited the med center a total of 3 times, and were quarantined for 48 hrs. It really made for a miserable trip... Hope you are all feeling better! It wasn't exactly the best "First cruise" experience for us, coupled with the cold weather... but we may try again in a few years.

So sorry your DDs got sick. Do you mind me asking if you were on Deck 6 as well? That seems to be where many people were when they got sick. And did you go in the pools? My family got sick on a trip to Disney a few years back, and I agree it was terrible.

We were on Deck 6... 6067 to be exact.
I have to admit that the dr's were great... our youngest daughter became violently ill around 3:30 am... even though they were closed, guest services paged the nurse / doctor on call, who called me right back, and had me bring her down at 4 am... she treated her and then we had to come back around 8 when they opened again, so they could see her again. Both kids were treated with suppositories b/c the vomiting was so bad. It was pitiful. We were not charged for any of the 3 visits or the meds we were given. The girls were very sick for the first 24 - 48 hours, but really worn down and wiped out for the next few days, and ate very little. Luckily, we haven't gotten it yet.
The ship dr did tell me he suspected it was Norwalk virus (spelling?) and that so far they had treated about 200 people for it. He said it was bad news, but usually when it breaks out on a ship, it is in the upwards of 500 - 600 people who contract it, so it could have been worse. He said to expect about a 24 hr incubation period before we would know if we had it as well. It was almost exactly 24 hrs between the time our youngest came down with it to when our 4 yr old got sick as well.
We never made it into the pools... or 2 of the three shows either, lol.

we just got off the Wonder on Sunday. We did not see any sick people. The ship was full. There were no mentions to take extra precautions due to illness onboard. Sorry to anyone who fell ill. We use the wipes, wash hands frequently. Disney is immepacable at cleanluness standards. The only thing we noticed was the Mickey pool being drained "unexpectadly" on Saturday night ( and we have seen that happen several times on previous cruises due to "accidents"). We will be back in 3 weeks to cruise the Wonder again.

Thanks mommy2paris for your response. It will certainly help cruisers on upcoming trips. Nice to hear the dr was good, and I truly hope your DDs are better now and you don't get sick. My DD had a stomach bug/virus in Dec at home, and I understand what you went through--but being on a cruise and missing almost all of it makes the illness far worse.

I am glad to see of the 6 pages of posts, only a handfull of cruisers were actually ill. Use the same precautions you would if you were with your hands any where else. (I personally wouldn't touch a table at a fast food restaraunt and then remove the wrapper to hold it.) You can't wash your hands enough. As far as the pools go, we only dip our feet in. Kids can easily swallow water and I think we all know (although may not like to admit) the kiddie pool water is warm for a reason! :rotfl: Just kidding!!

btw...we were on the 2nd deck.

We were in 6620 Jan 7-10.
We did not go in any of the pools, did not attend any shows, were not on CC due to cold and rainy weather, used wipes/soap a LOT, etc. I just think DH was unlucky  Poor guy!
The weird thing about CDC reporting...dh went to the ship's dr and they handed him anti nausea meds and imodium and never once asked him his name or stateroom. I thought that was odd because I thought they'd track that kind of thing.
And truly, we have no idea if his was noro or foodpoisoning or ???
Even after dh's nasty illness, I would still cruise again. Don't let this scare you off of your fun on the Wonder. Just be hyper vigilent and prepared just in case.

Thank you to everyone for the feedback. It is very interesting.
Details I missed in my initial posting are that we boarded the ship around 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, the 10th. The illness struck on the 13th, which leads me to believe that we did not bring it with us.
I should also mention that a couple more of us had it strike 8 or 10 hours after we disembarked.
What I have found particularly interesting are the references to Deck 6. Our cabins were 6552, 6553, and 6554!
Does anyone know which cabins had the sewage spill during the previous sailing?
Once the illness first struck, the cabin attendent refused to have anything to do with that particular room (6552).
We have never sailed before, so assumed that it was common practice to have someone serve the buffet food, and to hand out wipes before everyone entered a food area. Now I am convinced they were at least aware of a problem.
Thanks again to everyone for the information.

The handing out of wipes they've been doing for years (at least the 4-5 years we've been sailing) to keep outbreaks down ever since the other cruise lines lost entire sailings to the noro virus. The serving of food was a key indicator of a problem.

As I said in an earlier post we sailed Dec. 30- Jan. 3. We were in room 6108.
The other rooms in our party 6106,6110,6112,6114. Almost everyone of our traveling party of 18 was affected one way or the other with the virus.
Our son had an awful odor in his room one night, they were in 6114. Turns out that there was a sewage leak in the wall across from their room. The smell was very strong, but what can you do?
Again sorry to all others that got sick. It's not a great way to vacation but unfortunately it happens.
Besides that we had a great time and made some wonderful memories. We will be back for the DVC member cruise in September.:thumbsup2

I can't read the dr's writing well, but our daughters discharge sheets show R.... virus GI, so hopefully they will be reporting it.

We sailed in the summer of 2008 on the Wonder and they served the food then too. Wipes were also provided ALL OVER the ship... Both are just good practices on a ship where germs can spread so rapidly. Personally, I would think that if someone is sick in a cabin there is no way the entire room can be cleaned ENOUGH and disinfected thoroughly inbetween cruises. And I would think the porthole & inside cabins would be worse with no door to open to air the place out. I am sure they do not have time to go up & down all of the corridors & stairs and wipe down the hand rails & clean the buttons in the elevators etc. Once a virus is on a ship it is very difficult to get rid of it.

Is there anything stronger/better than Lysol to use?QUOTE]

There is a product called Odo Ban. It is used in hospitals and is very, very effective. I have it at home--- bought from Sam's club in large jug and then you add water to it. Has the eucalyptus type smell.

We used this to disenfect all areas when we had the flu at my house last year. Also works great on pet odors and non-toxic.

So you are allowed to pack an aerosol can of Lysol in your suitcase if you fly? Just not you carry-on right?I've never flown before so I wasnt sure, but I plan on bringing a large can of Lysol and wipes.

Your room steward will bring you a container of wipes if you ask. Not sure about spray.
