We sailed on the Wonder Jan 7 - 10th. All 3 of my children ages 5, 3, an 1 year old became ill in the early AM of the 9th! I suspected there were quite a few individuals ill on the ship as they weren't allowing us to server ourselves. I became ill the day after getting off the ship. (we had even been upgraded to the Concierge Level at the contemporary and I couldn't even benefit from the free beverages!)
I am curious why it hasn't shown up on the CDC website though. If you think about 3% of approx. 2400 - only 72 people would have had to been sick to report it. Not very much at all.
When I contacted Disney to see if I was eligible for any reimbursement, they indicated that they had no record of anyone in my cabin being sick as we did not visit the medical center. I found this odd, as I did call and report the illness to the medical center as per the instructions in the bathroom.
I wonder if they are only reporting their numbers based on the visits to the medical center, which would greatly under estimate the actual value.
Ashame really as I'm sure if it had been reported to the CDC it would have forced better cleaning before the next cruise. I have no doubt that those coming into our cabin for the next cruise would have gotten it from the surfaces. It's really hard to contain the aim of 3 children all under the age of 5!
Please dont shoot the messenger, and please dont anyone take this the wrong way. I agree that there has been for the last few sailings at least a GI issue on the ship.Exactly what I dont know as Im in the wrong field, and not on the ship.Im not condoning Disneys actions or inaction or the actions or inactions of the affected guests.
Playing devils advocate, as Ive seen this issue on another board as well regarding the same ship and same questions, same issue, assuming that those who were sick went to the med center, how can you tell, that all of the guests in that line were sick?(other than those who wer vomitting inline) From experience, looking at the line for a lot of things, youll have 3 or 4 family members in line for something that only affects 1 person.(Yes I know. If a child is sick, then at least 1 parent is going with them no questions asked. Both if there is more than one child ill.) How many times have you seen a line at say Cosmic Rays, that there were 6 people around the register, but 1 person paid and ordered? And they all walked away together. So in that regard, it would be hard to get a true estimate of how many people are truly affected.(Im not trying undermine anyones account.Just saying) At the same time, those who are not sick, are unknowingly exposing themselves to what ever the GI issue is.Also, some people may not be reporting the illnes which would further skew the numbers.
Second thought I have, is that since the med center,(which is contracted by Disney. Not owned or operated by Disney.) is treating the guests that are sick, it may be something that the CDC does not consider reportable.I dont know for sure, but if for arguments sake the med center has declared its a flu type illness, CDC may not be interested.(Please keep in mind I am only speculating and putting out a possibility)Which would explain the lack of it showing up on the CDC site.
I dont know for sure what the CDC considers reportable and not reportable, so I could be way off base on the reportability issue.
As far as better cleaning if Disney reported it to the CDC, I doubt it would make a difference in the outcome.Simply because, the CDC and whoever else is involved sets certain steps to deal with an issue like this. They still have to go from step 1 to 2 to 3 etc.
