Illness on Wonder

So you are allowed to pack an aerosol can of Lysol in your suitcase if you fly? Just not you carry-on right?I've never flown before so I wasnt sure, but I plan on bringing a large can of Lysol and wipes.

I have brought with me the small less than 3 oz. cans of Lysol with me on the plane in my carry-on.........Target, Walmart sell them at the cash-register area!!:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

We are sailing on the Wonder on 1/28 and I am bringing Clorox wipes, purrell and mini Lysol spray cans. I always Lysol the door knobs, sinks, toilets, remote controls, any sort of button, switch and phone. We've been on 10 DCL cruises and luckily have never been sick nor had any servers have to serve us at drink stations or buffets.

Right now there is a horrible stomach virus going around the local schools and my son's wrestling team with lots of kids out sick. So far no one in my family has had it thankfully.

Recent cruisers, please keep updating us. I'd hate to spend the trip in the bathroom!

We are also sailing on the Wonder on 1/28. This will be our first cruise and now I'm afraid that we'll end up sick! Thanks for the tips about all the places to Lysol!

We sailed on the Wonder Jan 7 - 10th. All 3 of my children ages 5, 3, an 1 year old became ill in the early AM of the 9th! I suspected there were quite a few individuals ill on the ship as they weren't allowing us to server ourselves. I became ill the day after getting off the ship. (we had even been upgraded to the Concierge Level at the contemporary and I couldn't even benefit from the free beverages!)

I am curious why it hasn't shown up on the CDC website though. If you think about 3% of approx. 2400 - only 72 people would have had to been sick to report it. Not very much at all.

When I contacted Disney to see if I was eligible for any reimbursement, they indicated that they had no record of anyone in my cabin being sick as we did not visit the medical center. I found this odd, as I did call and report the illness to the medical center as per the instructions in the bathroom.

I wonder if they are only reporting their numbers based on the visits to the medical center, which would greatly under estimate the actual value.

Ashame really as I'm sure if it had been reported to the CDC it would have forced better cleaning before the next cruise. I have no doubt that those coming into our cabin for the next cruise would have gotten it from the surfaces. It's really hard to contain the aim of 3 children all under the age of 5!

I was on the sailing right after you, and my stateroom host did mention that they had to disinfect the ship from the previous sailing implying that there was a greater level of attention paid to cleaning between the two sailings. Obviously from the number of folks sick on our sailing, they may have missed some spots!

are there any reports from the Jan 14-Jan 17th sailing of the Wonder yet? (they would've just gotten back yesterday)

I think it would also be interesting to see what everyone's stateroom numbers were.

Please dont shoot the messenger, and please dont anyone take this the wrong way. I agree that there has been for the last few sailings at least a GI issue on the ship.Exactly what I dont know as Im in the wrong field, and not on the ship.Im not condoning Disneys actions or inaction or the actions or inactions of the affected guests.

Playing devils advocate, as Ive seen this issue on another board as well regarding the same ship and same questions, same issue, assuming that those who were sick went to the med center, how can you tell, that all of the guests in that line were sick?(other than those who wer vomitting inline) From experience, looking at the line for a lot of things, youll have 3 or 4 family members in line for something that only affects 1 person.(Yes I know. If a child is sick, then at least 1 parent is going with them no questions asked. Both if there is more than one child ill.) How many times have you seen a line at say Cosmic Rays, that there were 6 people around the register, but 1 person paid and ordered? And they all walked away together. So in that regard, it would be hard to get a true estimate of how many people are truly affected.(Im not trying undermine anyones account.Just saying) At the same time, those who are not sick, are unknowingly exposing themselves to what ever the GI issue is.Also, some people may not be reporting the illnes which would further skew the numbers.
Second thought I have, is that since the med center,(which is contracted by Disney. Not owned or operated by Disney.) is treating the guests that are sick, it may be something that the CDC does not consider reportable.I dont know for sure, but if for arguments sake the med center has declared its a flu type illness, CDC may not be interested.(Please keep in mind I am only speculating and putting out a possibility)Which would explain the lack of it showing up on the CDC site.

I dont know for sure what the CDC considers reportable and not reportable, so I could be way off base on the reportability issue.

As far as better cleaning if Disney reported it to the CDC, I doubt it would make a difference in the outcome.Simply because, the CDC and whoever else is involved sets certain steps to deal with an issue like this. They still have to go from step 1 to 2 to 3 etc.

very true, i am sure there is a chain of events that is required to be followed. i for one would be interested to know how that comes about. just out of curiosity, for no other reason!

We are sailing on the 28 3 nighter (Hanover, a previous poster, is sailing with us and is part of our FE :goodvibes )

any way, this is just my OPINION-
it seems like families with children seem to be getting hit (also deck 6??)..
It will just be my mom and i sailing but we will do all possible ways of disinfecting whatever we can.. I do hope people have common sense as to washing their hands after the go to the restroom, sneeze, cough, etc.

I am curious if people on the cruise that ended the 17th have gotten sick..

I am totally nervous now. We are sailing on the wonder in a few weeks and have small children and will be on deck 6!

Me too! We sail on 2/14. We aren't on deck 6, but I'm still going to disinfect EVERYTHING I can. Is there anything stronger/better than Lysol to use?

We have plans after we get off the boat and I don't want to be in sick instead!

On our nov cruise, we noticed a bunch of folks were sick the last day and after the cruise (reporting it on our disboard thread). I didn't know if that was normal or not. Luckily we didn't get sick. I'm pretty sure it was luck. But what we do is use Lysol disinfecting wipes (don't like spray cans) on most things when we entered the room. We also had liquid antibac soap in the bathroom, everyone washes their hands when they get back in the room. And we had anti-bac gel with us and used it wherever we go (except in the dining rooms, since they gave those out when we entered). We are also germ-phobs at our course. Good luck and stay healthy!

What's up with Deck 6? That's where we were, too. Of course I did see a little girl vomit outside the theater just as a show was letting out on the third night. I feel certain this is where we were exposed to it.

I did not contact the cruise line, I really wish I would have now and i encourage all of you who just got off to do so and tell the of the reports of others from the Wonder. Maybe they could do a large disinfecting.

I want to go on the DCL again very badly, but I will be so scared about getting sick. It may sound silly but I'm scared to do a week-long one because of it.

We were on Deck 6 as well, reminder this is the rooms that were filled with sick people and overflowing sewage pipes.

Are the Lysol wipes effective in killing the norovirus?

Our hospital uses a bleach solution. The Clorox wipes aren't strong enough to kill the virus.

we were on deck 6...did not see any other sick people, no sewage, but our son was sick as described by many the day we got off the ship as mentioned earlier in this post. Just wanted to add we were on deck 6 too.

One more thing for all the nervous people...I had no idea there was any sickness on board, I only found out about it once I got on disboards, and I was on the cruise (Jan 10-14). All the shows seemed full, castaway cay was full, I did not see any sick kids or people looking sick moping about. I thought it was no different than my previous cruises, except for the slow buffet lines due to being served by cruise workers.

Even if you are on a cruise that is as "bad" as ours, there is a HUGE percent chance you will not be affected by illness.

Our hospital uses a bleach solution. The Clorox wipes aren't strong enough to kill the virus.

A phenolic environmental disinfectant (Lysol® or Pinesol®) may be effective, but may require a concentration of 2-4X the manufacturer’s recommendation. The use of this product at the higher concentration may
pose a significant health risk to children, workers, pets or yourself. Use extreme caution when using these products. Please read the manufacturer’s warning.

Here is a list from the CDC on what products DO kill the norovirus:
http://www.epa.gov/oppad001/list_g_norovirus.pdf

Normal household lysol and household clorox wipes are not on the list. (medical grade clorox wipes are - I'm guessing the actually have clorox in them unlike the household stuff)
