We'll be flying out of here in June/returning in July on Southwest for the first time at that particular airport. We live about 2 hours west (travelling in on the Reagan interstate) and need an exit off Route 88. Once we arrive at the airport can somebody walk me through parking, locations of ticket counter, etc? We plan on taking the first flight offered for the day, so it will be early. We're pretty experienced flyers--DH, Me, DS-18 and DD-16. THANKS! :earsgirl: :earsboy: :earsboy: :earsgirl:

Route from I-88 to Midway: Just east of the York Road toll plaza, take I-294 southbound (I-294 is the Tri-State Tollway; southbound is towards Indiana). Exit I-294 at I-55 eastbound (I-55 is the Stevenson Expressway). Exit I-55 at Central Avenue and turn right on Central (south). Proceed south to 55th Street. Turn left on 55th Street. Midway Airport is on your right for the mile between Central and Cicero Avenues. After you've driven about one-half mile east, you'll see daily fee parking on the north (left) side of 55th across from the airport. Find a parking space in the lot and take the shuttle bus to the terminal (make note of your parking location, there are multiple sections of the parking lot and they are color-coded; you'll need this information when you return so you know where to exit from the shuttle bus returning from the terminal).

At the terminal, exit the shuttle bus at the Southwest door (Southwest has about 75% of the gates at Midway, so this is quite easy to locate). You can proceed to the ticket counter or to a kiosk to check-in. In fact, you can print boarding passes from home within 24 hours of your scheduled departure using your Internet connection. After checking in, obtaining boarding passes if necessary, checking luggage if necessary, proceed through security to the designated gate and queue up with the A, B, or C boarding group when you're ready. Southwest does not pre-assign seats, instead boarding by "groups", so you'll want to get advance boarding passes if you can.

That should do it. I'll see how it goes for us on Monday :bounce:

Just wanted to say we had a great experience with SW out of Midway. We drove in about 4 hours to get there, as the prices were so much better than our local airport. We had an early morning flight as well, and it did take a little time to get through the security lines (much longer than our return flight home). I think it was about 1/2 hour, but that was really the only holdup. The southwest counter was very busy, but moved very quickly. Print off your passes from home 24 hrs in advance so that you can board with group A and get on the plane sooner.

Have a great trip!

Just wanted to correct the above poster with the directions. I-55 is actually a Northbound exit towards Chicago, not eastbound. :)

Thanks for the great information. Ralph&Pam have a wonderful time! :flower: :earsgirl: :earsboy: :earsboy: :earsgirl:

The new Midway Airport is lovely. Just allow lots of time... the walk to the gate can be longer than the walk at the BWVs!!!

Oops. Sorry about that. It has to do with the interstate highway numbering system (odd numbers for N-S highways and even numbers for E-W highways). I-55 is actually going in a general direction from the southeast to the northwest at the point where it intersects with I-294 (which itself is L-shaped, connecting with the E-W I-94 when the roadways are actually both heading north toward Wisconsin and bending around to the east at the other end to connect with I-80/94 again where it heads into Indiana). So what one actually does is go from I-88 (eastbound) to I-294 (also eastbound both actually southbound since the interchange is along the long north-south section of this highway, but it should be an E-W highway since it has an even number, so this counts as a turn to the "east"), then moves from the "eastbound" I-294 which is actually traveling to the south onto the "northbound" I-55 which is actually moving almost directly eastbound at the interchange. As Nuke indicates, however, the signage for I-55 offers two choices: North to Chicago or South toward St. Louis (or Springfield or Bloomington, I forget what the sign actually say). Bottom line: take the Northbound exit ramp from I-294 to I-55 and proceed on I-55 to the Central Avenue exit. You will turn to the right onto Central and be heading to the south at this point. Inspect any Chicago-area highway map and all this misdirection becomes much clearer in practice that I can make it in print.
