Anyone going. I have a co worker who is going to go on Thursday as if it will be any better then! I was hoping to go on the holiday but ...I don't know.

Cranky,

Will you let me know by PM how it is. If there are huge crowds or if it is not worthwhile for us to waste our NOv. 11? Thanks

I'll let you know :) My best friend and her wife are going Friday so I was instructed to provide a trip report by Thurs morning or else :rotfl2:

Geez! I better get the measurements for my wall space tonight! Can't go to IKEA unprepared!

Thanks! At least if it is not all that great or there is a line I can go to Christmas Tree or Costco or down the street to AJ Wright.

Good luck!

I took my DD days after the grand opening of the one in New Haven last year. It was MOBBED. They were directing people to park blocks away. We waited at least an hour in line for the restaurant.

My friend and I had been talking about going to the grand opening of the Stoughton IKEA for a while, and then last week decided we didn't want to brave it. So she and I drove to New Haven instead last Wednesday. We got there before 10:30 AM, and stayed till it closed at 9 PM!!! We looked at EVERYTHING...and I mean EVERYTHING...as well as ate breakfast, lunch and dinner there. :teeth: And some mighty good cinnamon buns for the ride home. :) (Next time, we're bringing a cooler to bring home some frozen Swedish meatballs.)

The store wasn't crowded at all, but we got chatting with an employee towards the end of the night and she said that it still gets VERY busy on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays in New Haven. So I'm guessing Veteran's Day in Stoughton will be pretty bad.

Can't wait to hear how it goes in Stoughton. GOOD LUCK, you brave souls!!!

Wow. Didn't know a Ikea would be a big deal. Guess I'm spoiled. Ours is 10 minutes away and has been there almost 10 years. It's a fun store! Enjoy. :goodvibes

Let's hope it's not like this!
Chaos at Ikea opening
By Oliver Finegold and Chris Millar, Evening Standard
10 February 2005

Five people are in hospital today after hundreds were crushed as the opening of England's biggest Ikea store turned into a riot.

Nine ambulances were sent to the outlet in north London after reports that up to 20 people had suffered heat exhaustion when the opening at midnight descended into chaos. Staff closed the doors after half an hour amid fears the stampede could become a Hillsborough-style crush.

Security guards said they were put "under siege" by customers who attacked them, leaving one guard with a dislocated jaw. The store remains closed and a cleanup operation is under way. Ikea apologised for the chaos and admitted the store was understaffed - but added that some customers "behaved like animals". Up to 7,000 flocked to the Edmonton store lured by adverts promising huge discounts, including £45 sofas and £30 bed frames, to those who bought before 3am. When the main doors opened 40 security guards were overwhelmed and crowds pushed through, leaving people pinned to the wall or trampled on the ground.

Security guard Gerard Visagie said "I have never felt so threatened. It was madness. A guard next to me was punched by a customer. He had his jaw dislocated. People were punching and kicking me and screaming. We were under siege.'

Paramedics said they had feared a disaster. An ambulance service source said. "I thought it could be another Hillsborough. It's a miracle no one was killed."

Video footage showed shoppers fighting over furniture - one man was pinned against a wall by a burly customer as they argued over a sofa - while others were stretchered into ambulances.

After 30 minutes the store was closed, staff holding up signs written in marker pen against the glass doors to announce the fact. The crowd refused to disperse and some tried to smash their way in.

More than 30 police tried to keep the peace amid fights between Ikea staff and shoppers. Firefighters freed trapped customers. Assistant Divisional Officer William Bird said: "I have not attended anything like this before." Traffic on the A406 seized up as people stuck in jams for more than an hour abandoned their cars.

John Olie, the deputy head of Ikea in Britain who oversaw the opening, said he was "shocked and overwhelmed". He admitted staff underestimated customer numbers and there were not enough security guards. "As soon as I saw the crowds I knew there would be problems," he said. "People were jumping the queue. We will review future openings.

"We are used to 1,000 people appearing, not 7,000." He said the store would only be reopened when it was safe to do so.

Earlier, an Ikea spokeswoman said: "It's fair to say we misjudged it but some shoppers behaved like animals and started shoving and pushing. There's not much we can do to stop that."

One Ikea worker said: "We closed the doors, but some people got stuck in them. We tried letting in people one by one but they ran through again."

Customers criticised the store. "I'm amazed at how badly organised it was," said Karni Mahmood, 37, from Enfield. "I only came here to buy a cheap sofa." Latyia Arpesh, 23, from Tottenham, said: "I was pushed to the ground and people clambered over me. I feared for my life."

Avril Nanton, 46, from Edmonton, left the queue after four hours: "Near the front there was a sense of camaraderie. But when the doors opened, people at the back ran to the entrance. Everyone was upset, people were fighting. I saw a woman held down by a group of girls." Ben Adetimle, 31, from Leytonstone, added: "I bought a sofa but when I turned my back someone stole it. I'm not upset. It's just furniture, not worth dying over." As medics helped the injured, customers carried on shopping. A woman with pot plants said: "I've come from Birmingham for this." Jilal Patel, 29, from Tottenham, said: "I was queuing at 11am. Nothing is going to stop me from getting my sofa."
Ummm...a woman with pot plants???

Houston already had an Ikea for several years, and they built a new, bigger one right next to it. When the new store opened, the crowds were absolutely unbelievable for weeks after. Mobs of people, no where to park, huge lines at check-out. We didn't go until about a month later, and it was still crazy.

So I am guessing no one went to the opening today. I guess I will just have to reconsider. I heard this morning at like 730 the traffic was backed up for miles . I guess I just wonder what the big deal is. I mean if they do not have any great specials then what is the attraction?

My DW works one exit up from the new store's exit, and IKEA was making deals with areas businesses to park people in lots up to 2 miles away adn bus them to the store.

She's not home yet, so I don't have the first hand account of the horror. She's probably stuck in traffic.

I went! Got there around 10:00am and sat in traffic on that road. What a stupid set-up but I'm sure it won't be too bad once things settle down a bit. Plenty of parking (not close but plentiful). It was very, very crowded but the store's huge so it was okay. The downstairs part is too crowded with the carriages but still, we managed to do a little shopping.

The restaurant was crowded, we didn't try. Lots of cool stuff - it's set up just like the New Haven one. I'm going back but I'll wait a few weeks.

Worth going but if you're serious about making purchases, I'd wait.

Well it does not sound like it was all that bad. Anyone else go? I was thinking that people would not even get it. I was going to head down at bout 630 on friday morn to avoid the traffic but it does not sound like that is necessary.

Here is my sad tale of woe.

I drive by the plaza entrance every day on my way to work. More often than not, I swing in to the Dunkin Donuts for a coffee. Today, I was NOT thinking, and swung in to hit DDs. There were orange cones set up so I could NOT turn left into the Christmas Tree Shop parking lot. There were at least 8 police officers along the road. I finally saw a break in the cones, and there was an officer right there, so I stopped and put my window down, and said to him: "I've made a huge mistake, all I wanted was to go to DDs for coffee" He laughed at me, and said "Sister, you picked the wrong DD on the wrong day. Go ahead right here, take a left, scoot up the parking lot, and get your coffee".

I'm gonna have to find a new place to stop for coffee. Since there's a DD on every other street corner, I should be fine. :rotfl: But I thought I was going to be forced to go all the way up to IKEA or Jordan's to turn around.....

I'm going to wait for the hubbub to die down, but I definitely want to check it out.

channel 4, 25, 7, etc. all had it on their morning news today. The first 100 people received a free chair (recliner?).... on the radio, a representative called and said the first person in received $5000, the second person in received $2000.

I guess there were people camped out there for a week in tents!!! Sorry, I don't see what it's all about... it's not close to me, and I don't think I'll make a special trip down.

We got there around 4:15 and it wasn't crowded at all - think Christmas Tree Shop this time of year level crowds, only spread out over a larger space.
The people there were kind of oblivious to their surroundings and often stopped short in the middle of the aisle and made it impossible to get by them. DH solved that issue by loudly saying "Ramming speed" and moved the cart back and forth. people got out of the way quick

The as is section was much better than New Haven. We bought 2 child dressers to use as fish tank stands/dvd and vhs storage for $51.70 each.

Jenz, I didn't think they'd have an "as is" section yet. But I guess that makes sense, if they screw something up while they're putting it together.

Can't wait to go!
I guess I just wonder what the big deal is. I mean if they do not have any great specials then what is the attraction?
It's a great store...a lot of people seem to think so (I do), but I'm sure not everyone will like it. But they have some great prices for some great items. They had a lovely bureau for $149, with big, full drawers. My friend and I were comparing them to Target, where you pull the drawer out and they're about 6 inches deep. However, if you want expensive, Trump-style furniture, then IKEA probably isn't for you.

They also have some great storage items. And things that you can pick and choose and put together as your needs require, ie, racks for the kitchen wall that you can add whatever accessories you need (baskets, paper towel holder, etc). You can solve a lot of storage problems there, to suit your own needs.

And it's an extremely well run store. I want DH to go, just to see it from a business point of view. There are rooms all set up, and you can get tons of decorating ideas. Everything has a price on it. The rooms have signs saying how much it would cost to buy everything in it. Then they have sections with just the beds, or just the bureaus, etc, and you can compare one to the other. They have the measurements on everything. On the item, it tells you where to get the item in the warehouse on the way out...which aisle and bin. They have a lot of items you just can't really find in your basic neighborhood store chain.

I still haven't gone to the New Haven one yet...and it opened, what, August 04? The only time I can drive over there would be during the weekend! I have some time off after Christmas...might head over there then...never a good time really. hehehe

How long should I wait before going back, do you think? I saw some really cool closet organizers that I want to get but I'll need to concentrate (measurements) and I'd prefer to wait until it's not so crowded. Do you think by next week, during a weekday, it will be better?

Also, I've had those darn cinnamon rolls on my mind since smelling them yesterday morning and now I'm obsessing over them! I need a fix to stop the craving! :rotfl:

It HAS to be better after this weekend...doesn't it??? I'd think so. The Grand Opening drawing ends Sunday, and I think so many people will have gone between yesterday and Sunday (esp with tomorrow a holiday), that it should be better Monday. I just might go myself, and the only thing I need is $5. :) Oh...plus the cinnamon buns (6 for $4). And the Swedish meatballs. :)
