I stayed at David Walley's Resort in Genoa, NV for a week over New Year's. I'd exchanged points for a studio (I think it was 135 for high season?).

Genoa is located just south of Lake Tahoe on the NV side. It's the first settlement in NV, founded in 1851, complete with "Nevada's Oldest Thirst Parlor" in the very small (blink and you'll miss it) downtown area. Very cute place, and I wish we'd had more time to explore it. It's just over Kingsbury pass from Lake Tahoe and a very quick drive to Heavenly resort. All the mountains on the south side of Tahoe are very close to the resort. The others are anywhere from an hour or two drive away. Carson City is about 30 minutes away; Reno about 1.5 hours.

The room was very nice, but not the size of a DVC studio. As you walk in, there is a small alcove with coat hooks. A little further on, there is a kitchenette on the right with a sink, small fridge, microwave, coffeemaker, and enough dishes, glasses (wine, water, juice, coffee sizes), and silverware for two people. Just across from that was the bathroom. That was a fairly good size, but only had a shower - no tub to soak in after a long day of skiing. The main bedroom area had a queen-size bed, one nightstand, a low bureau that just barely left enough room to squeeze between it and the bed, a small table and two chairs. There was another small closet in the corner of the room, and a sliding glass door that led to a balcony. You definitely have to keep things neat, otherwise you'd run out of room very quickly in there. There was a TV with a VCR, no DVD player. There didn't seem to be wireless internet access, and you paid for any out-going calls, so dial-up would cost you.

The resort has several different buildings. Some had outside hallways like OKW and SSR. The building we were in did not - more like BWV and BCV. The resort is known for its 8 mineral hot springs, but access to those is $20 extra/day/guest. I didn't get a chance to go in those as I'd forgotten my bathing suit. There's a restaurant onsite, but we didn't try it. We did get sandwiches from the deli. Reasonably priced, but I found a spider and a fly wing in mine. I don't think they charged for the extra sides. ;) You could rent videos and DVDs (so some rooms must have had those) at the main desk, along with rec equipment as each floor had its own recreation room with a ping pong table and a pool table.

I would stay there again, as it's well-located to the big ski areas. I was a little disappointed in the size of the room, but it was clean and comfortable. Next time, I'd probably ask that we get a place that comes with a tub and shower, not just a shower stall. If you have any questions, let me know.

While I don't ski, and I probably won't ever go to this resort, I do appreciate that you took the time to write this review. Thank You!

Thank you so much for the review. It's nice to hear what people think about their exchanges. :thumbsup2

I'm from Reno and didn't know there was anyplace to stay in Genoa! The only reason I wouldn't stay there is no tub. I'd rather stay in a casino resort in Tahoe..don't ski..also would never go in winter. I'm hopeful that the Disney Tahoe possibility comes to pass.
Nice review and who knew there was a resort in Genoa!

thanks for the review.....

always nice to hear about the exchanges.

How were the ski conditions and the weather?
thanks
Kerri

Don't get me wrong - there is probably lots to do during the springtime, too. There's a bike path nearby, and I'm sure the hiking is great - but I could only write up what I experienced! :)

You're welcome for the write-up. When I was doing research on the place, I couldn't find anything current on any of the timeshare boards, and the reviews on TripAdvisor were all over the place. Some people told horror stories, others had no problem. So I thought it might be useful for other DIS DVCers who might trade there to have a review on the first place we all check.

Nunzia - some of the rooms do have tubs, according to the specs on the resort website. Ours just didn't. So don't let that be the only reason you don't stay there. It's got other stuff to offer. A DVC Tahoe would be awesome, though.

Webmasters - would there be any interest in starting an II exchange review sticky? It'd be a great reference for everyone here on the boards. Just a thought.

Kerri:

Ski conditions were OK, but not great. Tahoe hadn't really gotten alot of snow before we got there, so there were quite a few brown spots and places where weeds were sticking out of the snow. My DBF got a HUGE core shot on the base of one of his skis from a rock when we were at Donner Ski Ranch. The area definitely needed some major dumpage. Which it got, but I'll come to that later.

Weather, for the most part, was fabulous. The first day we skied was Sun., 12/30. From then until Wed., we had bright, sunny, fairly warm conditions every single day. True bluebird skiing! However, there was that huge storm that was brewing out in the Pacific. Forecasters and the local ski channel were using words like "historic proportions" and "10 FEET of snow". Storm was supposed to hit on Thurs. It eventually got moved back to Fri., but Thurs. brought winds of 50 - 90 mph. We tried to ski Alpine Meadows that day, but so many lifts were on windhold as of 10 a.m. and it was supposed to get worse, that we just canned it and bummed around Reno and Carson City. We were supposed to leave Sat. (we flew in and out of Vegas as that was the cheapest fare I could find), but the weather was so bad on Fri., I talked my DBF in to leaving earlier. We didn't get out soon enough. We left at 6 p.m., and there were already blizzard conditions and lots of wind. Road signs were plastered with snow, so we were using mile markers to know where we were on a map. Finally, after going 60 miles in 3 hours, we pulled off the road at the biggest town that had a non-flea bag hotel and got a room for the night, then continued on in great weather the next day.

So whoever skied the week after we left had great snow! We had a good time, though, as the snow here is pretty much nonexistant where we are on the East Coast. It was great just to get out and ski.
