Iger: Working on `Star Wars' Attractions at Parks

Nov. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Iger comments on the release date for "Star Wars: Episode VII" and the planned expansion of "Star Wars" attractions at Disney theme parks. He speaks with Jon Erlichman on Bloomberg Television's "Street Smart." (Source: Bloomberg)

Almost or even green lit projects such as monsters inc coaster, Tron and DHS cars land all got tossed due to a star wars. Just wait for a huge 3 phase star wars land expansion at dhs. They will approach this like harry potter, DL will get a marvel theme park.

Could not agree more, this is going to be the HP killer that Disney wanted. Star Wars is huge for Dis and they need to be careful how it is presented within the parks, but I can see a strong movement in trying to out pace HP as Dis still wants to be king by the landslide that they have always been....IMO

I don't think it will kill HP but I do think it will draw more people to DHS.

Run for money yes, Star Wars is actually that big whenever an immersive land comes in to play to compete to Harry Potter, but will not kill Potter's success

Any Star Wars parks, rides etc will pull people from HP. SW will always have move of a lasting drawing power and with 3 new movies coming WDW would be crazy not to jump all over that.

Personally, I don't think it's a matter of drawing people from WWOHP (and why do I think of IHOP every time I write that?)

I think most people don't do Disney (or Universal) every year. Some go every year, some go once in a lifetime, but I'd bet there are many people who go every couple of years. Something big like Star Wars might draw them to choose WDW that year instead of some other place.

At most (in terms of the effect on Universal), it might affect how people split their trips. Assuming many families go on vacation for a week, maybe they do an extra day at Disney because of Star Wars, and Universal loses a day. Or perhaps Sea World or a beach trip loses out altogether.

So, with the expansion at WWOHP and new stuff at DHS & AK, I'd expect attendance records at both parks to be broken, rather than one park stealing from the other.

What I'm wondering about is how Star Wars meshes with Avatar in terms of schedule. I've heard rumors of 2017 for both.

From a guest perspective, a massive rehab for DHS and AK in the same year could drastically affect WDW, in terms of attendance, crowds, touring plans, everything.

From Disney's perspective, it seems unnecessary. Rather than having two big things in the same summer, they'd be much better off spreading them out over a couple of years. Something like this:

2017 - Avatar land opens. Restaurants, shops, extended park hours, evening show. Maybe one new ride.
2018 - Star Wars Land opens. Massive new theme, cantina restaurant, etc. Maybe one ride.
2019- Avatar's biggest new e-ticket ride(s) open.
2020 - Star Wars Land's biggest new e-ticket ride(s) open.

Spread the excitement over several years, & you're likely to get more repeat visitors over the same time period. I know I'd fall for that.

Agreed except subtract 2 years from your dates.

exactly build it in phases will get people to come back. Almost smart to announce details during construction. DL would expect a marvel themed e ticket with in the next 4 years and expand on that for a theme land.
Epcot will get some love over the next 10 years. Now I could see in the distant future a marvel 5 th gate. DC comics cut ties with six flags (could of easly happen 5 years ago when six flags when bankrupt) then DC goes to universal, marvel to WDW.

If Disney is going to contradict Harry potter they are going to have to announce Star Wars within the next year or at least start some sort of construction to show they are doing something. I agree with the above timeline making AK a full day park and adding a new themed land to DHS will definitely draw large crowds. I also think opening in phases will be the best way to go. If you open it all at once your going to be waiting quite a long time. That's why they are doing that with Disney springs because of the shopping element. But if you can get a ride, some shops, and restaurants open before you open your big attraction I think that will draw the people to come back for that attraction. I think Disney is going in the right direction with this. And if DC got bought out by universal and Disney got full rights to Marvel and they opened a 5th gate or at least a themed land I think Disney would be set for the next 25 years. The only park that would need something would be Epcot.

I dont know if someone brought this up and didn't watch the video but read this article that was with it here (see link below) about it saying that Disneyland would get a Star Wars Land first? Does that make any sense? Is that someone's opinion or did Iger say or lean that way? DCA got the overhaul and Cars Land. Don't know why they would do it at DLR first if not even at all. I can understand a Star Wars ride (or rides) in Tomorrowland maybe as they do already, but I don't agree with a whole land. Cars Land is unique to DCA and don't know why they wouldn't do the same with Star Wars Land at DHS. My opinion.

Ya, they were just talking about a SW theme addition to Tomorrow Land. They were not going to add an entire new SW land to DL.
Now does that mean that they are theming all of TL into SWs or is it a minor/partial insert or retheme?

No I think you mean ADD 2 years to his dates.

Disney is in such trouble with its Nextgen/MagicBand initiative that 'luxuries' like Star Wars and Avatar Lands are going to be pushed back and back.

I prefer optimism.
