If your neighbor did this...what would you do?

I'm not sure if "naked day" would act as a deterrent against party goer nosiness. Might have the exact opposite result!

My new neighbor and I have an adjacent backyard separated by a brick wall. My new neighbor decides to create a deck so high that when he has his parties all the guests can look down into our private yard. I know he can do what he wants and at this point don't care. But how would you feel if this were you?

I would go out there and hope he'd invite me over :cool1:

Seems like it's a pretty even trade-off.

They can see into your backyard. You can sit in your backyard and watch their party.

Neither of which, BTW, would bother me.

:earsboy:

In that case, I'd have to hop the fence and ask for a drink. Maybe everyone else would join in on naked day :)

My mother's neighbour did something similar. She built up her house and added on a deck to her second flood.

Then she complained that she could now see into my mother's yard and wanted my mom to grow her hedge higher! :confused3

Of course, she was a bit of a nutter at the best of times.

I will go against people here and say yep, it would bother the heck out of me.

This could be one of the good things about living in an HOA. Around here, that probably wouldn't be allowed. It is one think to have your neighbors see into your yard, it is another if they have a lot of parties and everyone can see into your yard.

I don't understand what a HOA would stop.
Building a deck?
Building a 2nd floor deck? Our house has a walk out basement, so the deck is on the 2nd floor.
Or someone having parties?

Assuming the deck conforms to whatever HOA guidelines there are, I don't see how they're a help.

IMO, if you have a problem with someone looking into your yard, put up a taller fence or taller plants to prevent it.

Feeling better and better about my decision to buy a house at the top of a hill, at the end of a cul-de-sac, on three acres, bordering a nature preserve.

Yes and yes. Some of them are very strict about what you can and can't build.

We don't know that they conform, I know some that wouldn't allow it, I know some that won't even let you park your car on the drive way. IN our neighborhood, if you build a second garage or building, it has to be the same material as your house. I also know that some won't allow trampolines or swing sets that can be seen. Some have lots of rules and some don't. IT may not help in this situation or it may have helped.

Also in our neighborhood, you can't just put up a taller fence. Sorry but it can only be so high and it must be out of certain material.

PRESUMABLY he has a permit for the work that he had done building the deck. Assuming that is the case, then the height of the deck is within whatever the zoning regulations are in your neighborhood and you have no recourse.

When you live near your neighbors, they can see in your yard, and usually they can see in yours. That's just part of living in suburbia. If you don't like that idea, you need to live somewhere with larger lots and more trees.

I don't care if my neighbors can see in my yard. I will do whatever I am going to do without any qualms about them seeing me. If they don't like what they see, they don't have to look.

Sounds perfect! We also border a nature preserve.

To answer the OP - yes, it would bother me. Mostly because I have privacy here and I like it and wouldn't want to give that up.

If Mrs. Tex and I decided to be romantic under the pecan trees, though, it might cause permanent blindness. But, anything our neighbors can see by looking into our yard is their own fault.

I wouldn't care. If anything, I'd probably spruce up my backyard some.
