If you were to go to Las Vegas....

The answer to the question, "when do you go home" is ALWAYS - early tomorrow morning - LOL
I like my brother's answer better. When one of them in the Rio asked "where are you from?", he pointed and said, "five miles that way". They left us alone - no point in trying to sell a Las Vegas timeshare to a local, ya know? ;)

Thanks everyone! I will definitely look into some of the suggestions. I forgot about all the shows. I wonder if DH will go see Mama Mia with me, he can't stand ABBA music. The Hoover Dam sounds like a dam fine idea, too:rotfl:
I'm pretty sure Mamma Mia closed back in January. On the other hand, its theater may be where they are or will be staging Lion King. Two big shows closed around the same time, and I don't remember which is being replaced by LK.

I was going to recommend cheapovegas.com, but I see a wise person already did. Really good forums, see everythinglv.com.

I wouldn't go to Vegas if I didn't wish to gamble. And when I go, I want to win buckets of money. ::yes::

But if I somehow got sucked into being there when I didn't want to gamble, I'd rent a car and drive to see Hoover Dam. Or Disneyland. Or both, depending on how long I was there.

More information: while Las Vegas Boulevard is actually a highway that runs for miles and miles and miles and miles and... "The Strip" is generally considered to start at Mandalay Bay at the south end and continue up to the Stratosphere - a distance of about three miles.

DON'T try to jaywalk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There are overhead walkways at the busy intersections; where you must cross at street level, obey the walk lights.

The better of the half-price day-of-show ticket agencies is Tickets2Nite in the Coke bottle building, just north of MGM and across from Monte Carlo. Sales start at 11, the list of available shows starts running on the overhead displays at 10:30, and if you check the listings in the What's On magazine in your room, they also do some phone sales ("that other place" doesn't, as far as I know).

Also check goldstar.com for reduced cost - as low as free - tickets to some shows.

The CAT (public) bus runs reasonably frequently; you can get to at least one of the outlet malls, south of Mandalay Bay, all the way downtown. The bus also runs on the cross streets and, well, really, into the neighborhoods because it's there to serve the local residents, too.

Anyway, Carnival in the Sky at Rio is fun, but the Rio is off the Strip. You can walk if you want - it's less than a mile, but CAREFULLY, please. You need to cross some highway on/off ramps. Or, there's a free shuttle from the front of Harrah's - which is not the Strip/casino side, but all the way through to the hotel lobby then out the door and around the corner to your right.

Great advice--especially about not jaywalking! Watch the cars turning, they aren't always carefully watching for pedestrians...even when the pedestrian has the right of way.
May I add a couple of other tips? Tuck some 10's, some 5's, and a few 1's away in your wallet. Having smaller bills makes taking the occasional taxi much, much easier! (I often take a taxi from the MGM to the Fashion Mall (about $11-12.00, and then walk back. It's a hike, but I enjoy the walk.)

About the Rio--the little shuttle buses you can take from Harrah's to the Rio are very nice...and free! (And the Rio has a seafood buffet that is second to none in my opinion.)

I go with a group of girls 3 times a year and we never rent a car. We walk from MGM grand and love to see the fountains at the Bellagio. Have lunch at Paris at Mon ami Gabi (their hamburgers are amazing) we went to the Mirage to see Zeigfied and Roys Secret Garden. The lion habitat at MGM grand. But my favorite is the view from the Voodoo lounge at Rio. I think its 50 stories up and the view of the strip is amazing. We were there in May and the weather was perfect, the crowd was great and we had such a fun time.

My birthday is early November and my friends is late October so were planning on going again for Halloween.

Yes, DITTO on the jaywalking tip.

Is NV a state where pedestians have right of way? MA is one of those states. I wish they would have BIG signs up as you cross the border into MA.

In NY, we loosely have that rule when at a traffic light, and you must let the pedestrian go first.

In MA, apperantly ANY time a pedestrian is standing at a curb and wants to cross the street, even against the light, the cars MUST stop for them. I've actually seen TWO TON cars, in moderately flowing traffic, abruptly stopping in the middle of an extremely busy street, (not at an intersection,) to let an 120lb. person cross. You can't imagine how many near fatal, rear end pile up collisions almost happen because of the first car abruptly stopping, for seemingly no apparent reason. :scared1: :sad2: PLUS, the other side of the street has to stop traffic too, in order for this person to cross.

I can't believe a law that favors abruptly stopping multiple, two TON cars, in favor of a 120lb. person. :sad2:

I'm not from MA. I'm not used to the signs on posted on cones saying I MUST stop at ALL times for all pedestians at the crosswalk (even if they don't have the light.) It took me several times before I realized and then remembered to jam on my breaks (in already flowing traffic,) to stop in time, and hope I don't get rear ended by another non-MA resident, for a person wanting to cross, instead of him waiting for the light. I'm surprised I haven't killed someone already who automatically expected me to stop, and they just went ahead and started walking.

Stupid, stupid law. :sad2: If traffic is already flowing, the law should err on the safety of the people IN the cars, not the pedestrians at the side of the roads. Moving cars become projectile weapons. To abruptly stop a two TON car for a 120lb. person is ridiculous. :sad2:

Another transportation tip is to use the monorail. It connects several resorts on the strip. You can get an all day pass for like $10.00.

for 4 days and you don't gamble what is there to do after you've walked the strip. Do you need to rent a car? We are looking for a relatively inexpensive long weekend trip for our anniversary in October. Any ideas?
Shows - Donny & Marie, Lion King, 5 different Cirque shows & more
Dining - everything from 99 cent breakfast to Michelin 3-star dining, including theme restaurants (Margaritaville, Rainforest Caft, Dick's Las Resort, Kahunaville, NASCAR Cafe & more)
Attractions - Fountain Show/Bellagio, Free Shows (Rio Show in the Sky, etc), Shark Reef (not free!), Mirage Volcano, TI Pirate show, Fremont St Experience
Spa - have a couples massage. The Canyon Ranch Spa at The Venetian has a Rasul experience that IMO is better than the Rasul on the Disney Magic
Hiking - Red Rock, Valley of Fire
Tours - Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon

You can even just sleep in and go to a movie.

If I can answer any questions, PM me!

thanks for all the advice:thumbsup2

My impression of Las Vegas from listening to friends that have gone is that LV is a "party town", and that if you are not a night owl there is really no point in visiting. However seeing the variety of things to do, I see my impressions were wrong. I did know about the Hoover Dam, but it didn't seem like it was enough to base a whole trip around. I think we may just give it a whirl if finances allow, or if WDW doesn't win out ;)

thanks again

Sue

I don't gamble, and I purposely want to go to Vegas to see Donny & Marie and then Bette Midler. :cool1: :thumbsup2

Isn't Cher doing a show there too, now? I can finally see her too.

Cher is, however once her contract is done she is done. I told my sis we can go down there and see her. (I am trying to get to Vegas.:lmao:)

I've never rented a car. We always use the Duece bus.....we buy a day pass, as many trips as you want. It goes to the outlet mall....where there is a Disney outlet :hyper:

Last trip BBF and I did only free things. It filled our 4 days. Carnival at the Rio, water show at the Wynn, pirate show at Treasure Island, Volcano at Mirage, M&M movie, walking around the Forum shops is fun, lions at MGM, over to Fremont street to walk around too, walked the strip and looked in all the resorts, Bellagio fountain, chocolate fountain there too.

Same here you can catch it from Rio, MGM and Harras........it can take you from one part of the strip to the other. You will still have to walk but not far. Besides walking is half the fun. Also very important....watch your wallet and watches....there are very professional pick pockets and they are good. One bump into you and there goes your wallet or watch.

We go the Vegas at least 4 times a year. WE drive 5 hrs or we hop a plane and we are there in 45 minutes(we do this 98% of the time) and take a taxi from the Airport. Be sure to try to share a Taxi.....just ask who is going where you are going ...you will not be the only one waiting for a Taxi. You can split the fair.

By the way Rio's buffet is the best...IMO...and most agree. Caesars is the least impressive and one of the most expensive...and most expensive.

Have a great time! WE head out sometimes just for a few days to take in a show. The kids come along with us. A plane flight for us is as love as $69.00 round trip most of the time so it's a no brainer. The shows however are not. Have seen almost every show they have.

Take the dam tour.

Ask dam questions.

Take dam pictures.

Sorry, couldn't resist. Love that scene. :lmao:

Back to our regularly scheduled programming.

We're supposed to tell you to go discuss this on the Vegas board, which is a sub-board of the Disneyland board, which is listed on the main section when you click on the general discussion boards.

Just a note - these are two different buffets. The seafood buffet is at the far end of the Carnival in the Sky section of the casino; the "regular" buffet is just inside the self-parking entrance.

I had no idea there was a Vegas planning board. That's why I don't like all of the sub boards on this forum. There are too many to keep track of
The specific board name in the Disneyland forum is California and the West.

Maybe we can get a Community Boards Moderator to move it?
