If You See It: Eat It! Via Panama to Disneyland - Completed and Link to New Trip Report 2/24

We did not have to wait long for the tour to start, but we nearly missed the start as our very relaxed tour guide did not deem it necessary to tell us that he was not just walking somewhere, but that he was actually starting the tour… He was not the greatest tour guide… But somehow he grew on me during the tour.

We started in the dining room with adjacent kitchen:

The living room:

And upstairs there were bedrooms and bathrooms:

I absolutely loved the tiles in the last bathroom!

We then walked outside into the lovely garden (which you can rent for weddings and events, they were setting up for one when we were there):

And then in another building on the second floor there was Ernest’s study/writing room:

DSC02953.jpg

And a close up of his type writer:

DSC02957-2.jpg

The house still has so many cats living there, this was one of them:

DSC02958.jpg

She was our tour guide’s favourite and got quite a few snacks from him during the tour. The cats have all their little houses in the garden and just roam freely around in the whole house.

DSC02961.jpg

And this is from the gift shop:

DSC02966.jpg

I am pretty sure the cats are not for sale!!

They had a really nice pool:

DSC02959.jpg

And this is a very famous cat drinking fountain that came with a story (in the picture featured with our tour guide):

DSC02960.jpg

The tour did not take long at all and it was interesting enough. Since it did not cost anything extra, I would recommend it. You can always just leave and tour at your own time.

Walking back towards the ship along the street in which the Hemingway House is, we came to the end of Route 1:

DSC02975.jpg

We also saw this impressive Banyan tree:

DSC02977.jpg

And the house that was the first head quarters of Pam Am airlines.

DSC02978.jpg

By then we were hot and sticky as hell and really wanted to get back onto the ship to cool down again!!

DSC02979.jpg

By the time we got there, we were also quite hungry and decided to get food and drinks first and headed up to the pool area to get something from the quick service places there. I failed here miserably with pictures, but I can still tell you that Michael had a hot dog (he claims that the DCL hot dogs are really good) and I had some things from Goofy’s Galley that I showed you in a previous update. I had a tuna wrap (it was like 1/6 of a wrap, they slice them in tiny pieces which is great if you just want a snack), a brie and bacon hot sandwich and a salad. The sandwich was delicious. It was a multi grain bread and they warmed it up for me, so the brie was all melted. Very good!! I also like that they have small bowls of salad, usually a mix of lettuce with something else, one day it was tomatoes, another it was carrots and sweet corn etc. There were big bottles of vinaigrette and ranch dressing and you could just add as much dressing you wanted yourself.

At some point I got a picture of this lovely mural that you can see from the glass elevators that go through the atrium –once they go to the higher decks:

DSC02982.jpg

When we got back to the room, we noticed that they had exchanged the handle on the safe. That was great as it showed that our issues were being dealt with. However, otherwise there was not further improvement in the room, the table was still wobbly. And in addition we found a dirty and wet washcloth in the bathroom (we had not used any of the washcloths, so we knew it was not ours). Michael was less than thrilled with the discovery. We also found that the area around the bed was not really very well vacuumed as there was stuff on the floor (white threads, nothing horrible, but still a sign of bad work). I think it was then that we also started to realise how worn the carpet was. I think there is a point when you have issues with a room and they start to bother you that your mind is much more starting to notice other little things that normally would not be an issue. But in combination they become something bigger.

Well, I convinced Michael to head to a trivia session that was going to start in Diversions right then. It was some kind of general trivia. I really like trivia, but thought that I had no chance at all to compete in trivia if it was held on an American cruise ship as I just don’t know much about American personalities, TV etc.

It was an adults only event and held in Diversions. It was done by David, who was the Club Host. I had no idea what this meant, but I found out during the course of the cruise that he was the one kind of responsible for the adult entertainment. He would introduce the adult shows, he was the host of the Match Your Mate Show etc. He was a really funny guy and I think this was one of his first cruises on the Wonder, he came from the Dream. He mentioned many times during the cruise how amazed he was at the different dynamic of a longer cruise as compared to the ones he had been on on the Dream.

He was also totally new to being a Trivia host (or played it very well) and kind of was totally blown away by the weiredness and randomness of the trivia questions. We kind of struggled through. And then there came this question: “Which automobile GIANT bought Land Rover?”. He repeated this question several times and always put the emphasis on GIANT. Well, my initial thought was that the answer would be BMW. But then he kept on with this GIANT – and BMW really is not a giant, it is more of a boutique company if you compare it to the likes of GM, Ford, VW or Toyota. So we picked something else as I was pretty sure that BMW would be the wrong answer. Then at the end when we counted the right answers, we found out that it indeed was BMW – and that we lost by 0.5 point!! So, Michael started accusing me that we lost because I did not get BMW right and I kept arguing back that David had said GIANT and BMW is NO GIANT!! The people on the table next to us were quite amused by our big “fight”. ;)

After trivia it was time to head to the pool where I got another delicious Drink of the Day: Key Lime Margarita:

DSC02985.jpg

This was an excellent drink!! Once again quite potent!

First it was rather sunny, but then it became more overcast…

DSC02986.jpg

We often hang out at the pool in the later afternoon which worked out quite well as people left the pool early to get ready for dinner and show. Our routine on days when we went to the show was mostly that I would head down to the room to take a shower before the show, then we headed to the show and then Michael would take a shower between show and dinner while I was getting dressed and prettified. Worked well for us and let us make most of the later afternoon.

So, that’s what we did today as well. The show today was a ventriloquist called Lynn Trefzger. Btw, in German we don’t use all those Latin names for many things, for example for medical terms. But also we don’t call that kind of performer ventriloquist, but the literal translation of the German word would be “tummy speaker” as they don’t speak with their mouth, but with their tummy.

I am normally not a fan of ventriloquists as I usually find the puppets they use rather scary. But she was very funny! I already liked it that she started out with a cuddly big bear, not a puppet!

After the show Michael headed to the room for the shower while I went to guest services to enquire about our room situation. Especially about that they said that the hotel manager would get in touch with us, but we had not heard from him yet. They asked whether I would go to the room now as they would then send him to our room. I told them that we would be there to speak to him in 15 minutes (once Michael got out of the shower) and went down to the room. Who was not there? Michael! He came in shortly after. He had chatted with a fellow guest in the hallway! So he had to take a speed shower. And just as he poked his head out of the door of the bathroom announcing that he was ready, it knocked on the door and there way Byron, the hotel manager for deck 2. We had a very good chat with him about our issues. He said that he had tried to speak with us a few times today, but we had been out. And we had not been in the room a lot during the day. He just got on the ship with us in Miami and had transferred from the Fantasy. We got the impression that he really took our issues seriously and could see that the room was not really in the shape that a room on a Disney ship should be. While we were talking you could see him looking around and making mental notes of things. I think it was also on that day that he told us that they had exchanged our wobbly table, but then realised that the new table was wobbly, too. It had turned out that the table was not the issue, but the floor! It was so uneven just where the coffee table would normally be placed that it made the table wobble! We discussed with him that the day after the next one when we were in Cozumel, we would be away form the room for a long time and that they could come in that day to do some repairs. We really felt much better after this visit!

Have been to Key West once. Would love to go back. Such an interesting place. History, Quirk, Port, beach and well more quirk.

Sorry you are having a bumpy start with not being seated alone for dinner and the room needing attention. Glad the dinner got resolved and hope the room does.

You had a beautiful day for Key West. Looks like you really enjoyed it.

Sorry for the room issues but kudos to the hotel director to take them seriously. I hope they are able to resolve them.

I had no idea you ever went on a cruise! And yes, we did see some chickens, but not so many actually. Maybe they were all asleep midmorning when we got off the ship?

It was in 2008, and was a PChef trip that Judy earned. Well, she earned a trip for two and we just bought regular tickets for the rest of us and had 2 rooms. I could have sworn that I had done a mini-trip report on it, but I looked back at my PTRs and I guess not.

The Hemingway tour looked pretty good, especially for the price! But it'd be very cool to see how he lived and especially his typewriter.

Whoa, I wonder what kind of plant this is?!

And this is a very famous cat drinking fountain that came with a story (in the picture featured with our tour guide):

What was the story? popcorn::

Aw, sorry that you missed out on the trivia prize, but I can understand getting thrown off by how a question is read. :sad1:

I am all caught up again. What a shame that you had so many issues with the room. Ours was in great shape. It is nice though that they take this kind of feedback seriously. Great that Josip managed to sort out the table situation.

I have to go back at some stage and make notes about the things you visited in Key West. I think we would enjoy this kind of wander very much.

I can't believe that I managed to miss the Key Lime Margarita. I would have loved this.

Corinna

Yay! I'm glad you're back. It's like reliving our trip through yours.

That's really a shame that your room needed some intense attention. I hope it gets better. Ours was pretty good.

Your wandering around Key West looks very much like our wandering around Key West. We started out with the trolley tour early and then by 9 we were done and off on our own.

That funky Walgreens actually had an amazing Craft Beer selection. They had a sign about having over 100 craft beers and we figured they must be using the term 'craft' very loosely. We were wrong! They had a huge selection of legit beer. We headed back to the ship with several six-packs for the room.

I loved all the cats at Hemingway House. There was one on the counter of the gift shop supervising the purchases.

Thanks!!

I think check-in at Port Canaveral is a little more whimsical, but generally it is very much like at an airport, you even go through the same type of security. The only difference is that there is only one gate!

The cherry coke is (currently) included in the dining room. You can get sodas for free from the drink stations and then during meals in the dining rooms and at the buffet. The dining rooms have a few more options that are not available at the drink stations. Like the cherry coke, my drink the club soda. I have also read reports of ginger ale being available, but recently someone said that this was no longer the case. Generally when we ordered something that was not included (for example the buffet turns into an alternative table service restaurant for dinner but does not have the cherry coke, they would have gotten a can of cherry coke from a bar), we were alerted that this would be an extra charge. There are a few threads on the cruise boards about which drinks are included and where. For example juice is free in the dining rooms and from room service, but soda is not free from room service...

Yes, you can order as much of everything as you want. Last cruise I had ordered something which I just did not like out of personal taste and my servers sprang into action to get me something else. I think with the steak he was not aware about how not so good it was when he was eating it, but with hindsight he realised how much better the other steaks during the cruise were.

Müsli is indeed a breakfast staple here! Can't you get it at home? It is actually quite easy to make yourself.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions. My girls will be thrilled with the cherry cokes with a real cherry in them! I just never think of Musli when I'm planning the shopping but I'll have to try next time.

Also thank you for the adorable cat pictures. As soon as I read you went to Hemingway's I wondered if the cats were still there. :lovestruc

Way behind and trying to get all caught up! :guilty: Work right now is not quite as bad as what you just went through, but pretty close. :crazy2:

Love the picture of you and the captain.......you look so pretty in that dress! :goodvibes

Love all of your shots on Key West! Never been there, but really need to sometime! I was out at lunch with a co-worker recently and he was really talking it up. He and his wife go there every year and just relax, even though he said there was a lot to see and do, which your updates sure proved to be the case.

Interesting tour of Hemingway's house, and cool finds with the end of Hwy 1 and the origin of Pan Am. :thumbsup2

And of course that mural of Ariel is a definite favorite!

Sorry you blew the trivia question and cost Michael the win........ ;) I guess that was one time being German worked against you. :rolleyes1

I guess you were posting while I was.

Great tour - If I am ever in key west again I may have to seek that out. :goodvibes

KEY LIME MARGARITA !!!!!!! Oh. My. Heaven. I need to have one of THOSE - well at least one. :rolleyes1

Glad you got some personal attention with your room. It is a bit funny when it turned out to be the floor and not the table, but you think the one who came in to replace it would have checked and figured that out.

Key West sounds fun. The Hemingway house sounds like a neat place to visit. Were any of the cats six toed? I know, the crazy cat lady asks that question! :rotfl2: You don't know anything about our cats, but some folks here do. :rolleyes1

It sounds like you really got a lot of relaxing done in the afternoon. I hope that they have a Key Lime Margarita on our cruise even though we don't stop at Key West. I'll have a few of those if they do!

I really liked Key West!

When going through it in the beginning, it did not feel so bad. But once all the issues were resolved (and you will soon find out how they were dealt with), we realised in hindsight, how much those littel things had bothered us. And how much nicer our vacation then was once they were gone.

Sorry for the room issues but kudos to the hotel director to take them seriously. I hope they are able to resolve them.

Jill in CO

The hotel director was wonderful and I was very impressed with him! We made sure to mention him on our comment card at the end as one of the VM that we thought were outstanding.

Looks like we got back from our summer vacation right in time. :thumbsup2

We just LOVE Key West! And your pics brought back so many wonderful memories. Can't wait to return on the Magic in March.
You hit a lot of the good spots. Hemingway's House definitely is great to visit and you can even climb the lighthouse across the street and it gives you a great view of the island. :goodvibes

So sorry to hear about your issues, but at least (so far) they are trying to take care of them.
And I know (since our cruise on the Magic earlier this month) that even little things not being right can put a damper on that wonderful vacation.

Can't wait to read more! :goodvibes

Ah, the PChef times! Sounds like there were some real perks to that job! But I am sure that Judy finds it far more satisfying to work in the field that she actually trained for. :goodvibes

The Hemingway tour looked pretty good, especially for the price! But it'd be very cool to see how he lived and especially his typewriter.

Oh, the house itself charges an entry fee. You just have the choice of walking through it on your own or with a guide. I thought his study was the most interesting part of the tour, thinking that this is where the books I read were written.

Whoa, I wonder what kind of plant this is?!

No idea, but we thought it was impressive!

What was the story? popcorn::

Don't want to spoil it, so the answer is in white:

The lower part of the water fountain, the white basin is actually an old urinal from Hemingway's favourite bar, Sloppy Joe's. When they renovated the bar, some of the regulars wanted to take the old stuff with them and somehow Hemingway ended up with the urinal and wanted to install it as a water fountain for the cats. His wife thought this was not what she wanted in her garden, however, her husband insisted. So she came up with the tall urn from where the water flows down into the basin that even got some nice tiles all around it. You really have to look close, but then you can tell that this used to have a different function in the past...

Aw, sorry that you missed out on the trivia prize, but I can understand getting thrown off by how a question is read. :sad1:

Yes, it was one of the cases where too much knowledge was not good.

I am all caught up again. What a shame that you had so many issues with the room. Ours was in great shape. It is nice though that they take this kind of feedback seriously. Great that Josip managed to sort out the table situation.

Corinna

We were really rather surprised about the room issues as we did not expect anything like that on a Disney ship. But they did take us very seriously!

We were really happy to have our table situation resolved!

I was really pleasantly surprised how nice it was to just walk around Key West as I read quite a few not so nice comments about the town. But during the day it was really pleasant and I was happy that we made the effort to visit the Hemingway House and took time to explore some of the shops.

I somehow had regretted not getting more drinks of the day on my last cruise, so I made a point on this cruise to check out the drink of the day nearly daily to see if it was something that sounded good to me. As I love margaritas, this was just perfect!

Yay! I'm glad you're back. It's like reliving our trip through yours.

I know what you mean about reliving one's own trip through another's TR, that's why I loved reading Corinna's TR about our cruise!

I am happy to hear that our room issues were not common on the Wonder. On board when we mentioned having room issues to others, we generally heard that everyone else was very happy with their rooms, so I think we got a room that was an exception.

You definitely got an earlier start through Key West than us if you started walking around at 9am! How funny that the Walgreens had such a great beer selection, but it kind of suits the building and the city very well! But I am very impressed that you carried all the beer back to the ship! :thumbsup2

I think the cat at the register was there as well when we were there, but the shop was so full of people that I could not get a picture. I thought it was lovely how much all the cats felt at home all over the place.

:lovestruc

I am happy to help - I had a million of questions before my cruises as well and was always greatful for other DISers providing information.

There were plenty of cats and they were very adorable! :goodvibes

And thanks for the comment about the picture with the captain! :goodvibes

I think Key West can be a bit of a party town, but it is not only that, there is much more to see and do. It might not be the best place for great beaches, but if you drive to some other keys, there are really nice beaches, too. I once spent a day at a wonderful state park on the Keys with a fabulous beach.

On the trivia, I think this really was a case of being confused because I knew too much. There will be another story kind of related to trivia with a better outcome!

Ah, your previous reply could have worked well for both updates!! :goodvibes

The Key Lime Margarita was really good, but the problem with the drink of the day is that you never can count on it. Of course, they might be able to make it for you anyway...

I guess they don't do repairs in the rooms as they want to get in out as quickly, so standard procedure would be to bring in new table, take the old one with them and repair it in their shop and then have it in the replacement storage. Cruise ships actually sail with replacements for nearly everything on board, furniture, bedding, carpet even as you never know what happens and they cannot get replacements ordered as quickly as on land.

Key West sounds fun. The Hemingway house sounds like a neat place to visit. Were any of the cats six toed? I know, the crazy cat lady asks that question! :rotfl2: You don't know anything about our cats, but some folks here do. :rolleyes1

Yes, there were six toed cats. There were quite a few other visitors who were constantly counting toes and taking pictures of cat feet! :goodvibes

Drinks of the Day seem to vary from cruise to cruise. But you could always ask the bar tender if they can make you one. It was a great drink!

Looks like we got back from our summer vacation right in time. :thumbsup2

We just LOVE Key West! And your pics brought back so many wonderful memories. Can't wait to return on the Magic in March.

Can't wait to read more! :goodvibes

Sorry to hear that you had to suffer from issues on your cruise! And I totally understand, we really tried to not let those little things take us down, but it only worked to a certain degree.

Climbing the lighthouse would have been fun, I have to remember that for when I am there next! I was a bit surprised how much I liked Key West, but it had a wonderful relaxed atmosphere!

Just catching up...

First I encountered the “foggy lense syndrome”:

I hate it when that happens!

Josip had a big smile on his face and greeted us with: “Good Morning! Remember table 14! That’s where you will eat tonight!” Yeah!! He had been able to arrange for us to have our own table!!!

:cool1::woohoo::yay:

Duvall Street is the main street through Key West and it is filled with bars and lots of souvenir shops – some of them with rather questionable merchandise.

Never been there, but I can already picture it in my mind.

Then we came across the San Carlos Institute http://www.institutosancarlos.org which is kind of a Cuban Cultural Center I think. It had some exhibitions on the ground floor and it was free to explore. So That’s what we did.

DSC02924.jpg

Awesome tile work!:thumbsup2

Next we came across what must be the most bizarre Walgreens in existence:

Wow, that is weird. Like you said, I guess it's better than tearing it down.

I ended up buying a lovely necklace at one of the nicer stores. It turned out that lady making the jewellery that I so admired was actually the person selling it and we had a nice chat about how she made the jewellery. We started talking about Germany and she and her husband had been on a big trip to Germany a few years ago driving all over the place and really loved Nuremberg. I felt that on that first port stop I already had found a wonderful souvenir from the trip!

Great! Seems like it was a divine appointment.

The house still has so many cats living there, this was one of them:

Hmm...I'm not sure I would do well on this tour. :rolleyes1

So, Michael started accusing me that we lost because I did not get BMW right and I kept arguing back that David had said GIANT and BMW is NO GIANT!! The people on the table next to us were quite amused by our big “fight”. ;)

This is serious! Next comes the fight over leaving the toilet seat up! :rotfl::rotfl2:

But also we don’t call that kind of performer ventriloquist, but the literal translation of the German word would be “tummy speaker” as they don’t speak with their mouth, but with their tummy.

That's SO much better than "ventriloquist". I'm using "tummy speaker" from now on! :rotfl:

We really felt much better after this visit!

I'm glad they were taking your concerns seriously.:thumbsup2

Ah, the PChef times! Sounds like there were some real perks to that job! But I am sure that Judy finds it far more satisfying to work in the field that she actually trained for. :goodvibes

Yes there were! I enjoyed the perks and she had all of the headaches :headache: so it was probably tougher for me when she gave it up than it was on her. Oh well.

Don't want to spoil it, so the answer is in white:

It's been a while since I've seen the ol' invisible ink trick. Thanks for the additional info!

Yes, it was one of the cases where too much knowledge was not good.

Happens to me all the time! :rotfl2:

I guess they don't do repairs in the rooms as they want to get in out as quickly, so standard procedure would be to bring in new table, take the old one with them and repair it in their shop and then have it in the replacement storage. Cruise ships actually sail with replacements for nearly everything on board, furniture, bedding, carpet even as you never know what happens and they cannot get replacements ordered as quickly as on land.

I guess what I meant was I would hope the person who brought the table in to replace it would of at least wiggled it to make sure it didn't wobble. Then I am sure there is a simple solution like a felt pad on one of the legs to even it out.
I guess it bothers me when they come into fix something and either break something else or replace it with it an item that has something else wrong with it. :(

Joining in for your TR!

I actually got on the ship a month after you for an Alaskan Cruise. I luckily got Sasha in Palo's who I adore. He is fabulous.

I too have always enjoyed Jimmy as a cruise director, but this time he went above and beyond for a family we had the chance to get to know through Facebook before our trip. The family had lost their husband/father about 2 months before the cruise in a drunk driving accident. We had the chance to talk to Jimmy one on one at the DVC members meeting and informed him to see if there was anything they could do for them. He did something nearly everyday for them. Special meet and greets and privileges to enter cast member areas. Amazing! He is absolutely amazing. There are no words for the amount of gratitude we have for him.
