If You See It: Eat It! Via Panama to Disneyland - Completed and Link to New Trip Report 2/24

We were on the wrong side of the ship for the visitor centre so it is nice to see the other side in your photos. If I remember correctly the stuff on the meat was wild mushrooms. I would have loved to see the pelicans fishing at night. I was glad that we refuelled after the crossing. In 2011 we refuelled during the night before the crossing and we kept being woken up by announcements as at that time people were still allowed to smoke on their verandas and therefore they had to make the announcements that they could be heard in the cabins.

Corinna

I am glad that I could provide the port side experience that you missed by hanging out on starboard!

Yes, the dark stuff was mushrooms. Thanks for reminding me!

Having an announcement in the middle of the night before going through the canal would not have been well received in our cabin!!! I had no idea that this would have been an option!

I really liked that we were anchored there in the evening, it kind of added some special atmosphere!

Going through the locks seems like such a cool experience! Thanks for the detailed report on that!:thumbsup2

Glad that you are enjoying it! It was pretty special!

As the resident engineer, the Canal is fascinating! Thanks for posting so many pictures of it! It must have been really interesting to watch the ship go through.

I'm also thinking those must be some high bridges to allow cruise ships to pass underneath.

Glad you enjoyed the new Captain America movie--I thought it was great!

Yes, I thought that someone who enjoys dams, would enjoy locks as well! :lmao:

The bridges were pretty high - but according to my engineer father (whose speciality is steel bridges) they were pretty basic. :confused3 Looked impressive enough to me!

And while I enjoyed Captain America, I much preferred Guardians of the Galaxy out of the Marvel films. :goodvibes

Love the video and yes it does remind me of the stretching room in HM. :rotfl:

I probably would be glued to the side to watch the process and taking video and pictures much to the annoyance of everybody. :lmao:

Now on to Dinner.
Michael has what 7 green beans? :confused3 I think the green stuff may be collard greens or something along those lines. The other stuff does look like mushrooms.

I might have gone for that prime rib ( with appropriate substitutions of course ;))

There is indeed something stretching room about it. It is really interesting that you can watch the ship going up or down. And I am sure your kids would love to sit through several hours of video of Panama Canal locks!! :rotfl2:

Portions are generally not very large on the cruise - and especially the sides are often very small. Partly because you get four courses, so you need space in your tummy. But I think this is one of the reasons why one does get tired of the cruise food...

You mean everything else on the plate??? :rotfl2:

Poor Pat can't eat beans and potatoes???

Day 13, May 10

Day at Sea
Dress Code: Cruise Casual
Dinner Menu: World of Flavour
Show: Toy Story the Musical
Weather: Cloudy, 77°F/25°C

Link to today’s Navigator

This was the first of four sea days in a row! I had been looking forward to that part of the cruise a lot. I really love sea days. But I was also a little bit afraid if things would not end up being too monotonous.

I woke up at around 7:30am and could feel the bed moving around quite a bit! Seems like we had met some rougher seas for the first time. I was briefly wondering whether I would get sea sick, but then I decided that I was really enjoying the rolling movement of the ship! I slowly got up and headed out to do my stuff while Michael was sleeping in.

Once outside, I saw that there was land on the horizon:

DSC03768.jpg

DSC03769.jpg

I think it must have been Costa Rica or Nicaragua on our way North West to Mexico.

I got a snack from Beach Blanket Buffet for breakfast:

DSC03770.jpg

Some müsli. It was delicious, very creamy!

I wanted to sit outside but the weather was really not nice at all… But I had a nice view nevertheless:

DSC03771.jpg

I also tried to get a picture of the restaurant:

DSC03772.jpg

I think it has a really nice, whimsical theme with the beach balls and surfboards.

After picking up some Earl Grey tea I headed to Studio Sea:

DSC03773.jpg

It was time the Cruise Director morning show!! It was really interesting this morning as Jimmy told us all kind of little facts about how the passage through the canal went. And he got some pleasure in pointing out that we had gotten a tiny dent due to Captain Fabian being “incompetent”. This resulted in the phone ringing and it was Captain Fabian calling in congratulating Ashley to her promotion as due to Jimmy’s lack of respect for the Captain, he will have to leave the ship at the next port. It was quite funny!

They were also talking about upcoming events, one being the Wii-Bowling challenge later that day between Jimmy and the Captain. Jimmy said that his price if he won would be that he would be allowed to dock the ship in Puerto Vallarta. I am pretty sure this got the Captain plenty of supporters!

The other event that I was really looking forward was the “Welcome to the Pacific Deck Party” that was going to be hold at the adult pool. Unfortunately the weather caused them to cancel that.

After the Morning Show I wanted to settle down with my book on deck 4. Not a good idea! It was really windy and rainy. So I decided to head to the Outlook Café. I found a nice chair in the corner and sat down. I noticed that the side of the chair was slightly wet and was wondering whether someone had spilled their drink there. But before I could investigate further a big water drop hit me. I looked up and there it was leaking through the roof!

I moved my stuff to another chair and alerted one of the CMs. Within a few minutes some maintenance people arrived and looked at it. I had already moved the chair out of the line of drops and they came and put a bucket down. I was still sitting next to this and took a picture of the bucket. The maintenance officer that was dealing with that saw me and was a bit embarrassed that I took a picture and asked me to please not post it on the internet. I did promise, so no picture for you! But you get the story. I can also report that already a few hours later, there was no sign of dripping water anymore. So, they were good in repairing the issue immediately!

It really was rainy:

DSC03776.jpg

I read my book, caught up on my trip notes and enjoyed a coffee and a pastry:

DSC03781.jpg

And after a while the rain got even worse:

DSC03784.jpg

And then the weather got better and I moved down to deck 4:

DSC03785.jpg

A picture of my seat with my important tote bag that carried all the important stuff like sunscreen, book, trip notes, pen, Navigator and a cheap waterproof watch (you can see it at one of the handles of the tote, this is necessary as there are far too few clocks all over the ship):

DSC03786.jpg

And a view along the deck:

DSC03788.jpg

After some time the weather turned back to rain – and then it was time to watch Jimmy and Captain Fabian during the WII bowling challenge. I was wondering whether this was really going to take place and I headed up to the Goofy Pool.

They had it all set up:

DSC03790.jpg

But as you can see, it was really raining!

DSC03792.jpg

In the picture above you can see a number of officers hanging out under the over hang of the pool bar.

Jimmy and the Captain were at the front of the pool, I guess talking about tactics or so:

DSC03793.jpg

And then they had to get from there to the other side of the pool. Through the rain…

DSC03795.jpg

And while the Captain tried to move in a way that made him not totally soaked, Jimmy just embraced the rain:

DSC03798.jpg

Once they got started, I headed down to our stateroom to see if Michael had woken up. And he had. We decided to grab something from the counter services places up on deck. I am not sure what I had, I think sandwiches and a salad. Michael chose to get the daily special from the burger place. It was a Philly Cheesesteak. It really wasn’t, even if it was called that:

DSC03799.jpg

There was some steak underneath the cheese slices. And Michael said it was ok, but was not in love with it either. He expected something else.

I decided to head into Beach Blanket to get some desserts from there. For whatever reason it seemed that the lunch desserts on the buffet were kind of the best selection and generally better than the choices at dinner:

DSC03801.jpg

The warm chocolate pudding was to die for and I think I got some more…

It was still raining heavily:

It's amazing how you kind of hang on to the good memories and kind of forget about the not so magical stuff. I had totally forgotten how wet that day was. Looks like you still had a good time. I actually loved that steak sandwich and had it a couple of times during the cruise.

Corinna

That's too bad about all the rain. It definitely can put a damper on things. I love seeing the photos of the ship. Only eight more days!

Sorry that I reminded you of the not so wonderful aspects of the cruise! ;)

I was really not so bothered by one day like this, it would have been bad if it had gone on for five days in a row or so.

I think it was great that they offered different options besides burgers and chicken fingers. And I don't think Michael thought it was bad, but it wsa not what he expected.

One rainy day is totally ok in my book!

Have a great cruise on the Wonder! If you see Jimmy tell him hi from me! (not that he will know who I am!! :rotfl:)

I absolutely agree. We still had a great day.

Remember how the evening before we had found out that we missed out on a talk given by an imaginer, George Scribner? Well, he had another talk today called “Behind the Scene’s of Mickey’s Philharmagic” at 1pm and we headed there. It was being held in the Buena Vista Theater, the onboard cinema. We tried to be there early and that was a good idea as the theatre ended up being nearly totally filled. Yes, lots of Disney fans onboard!

A partial view of the cinema to show the décor:

DSC03813.jpg

Here is George Scribner with the starting slide:

DSC03819.jpg

He started off with introducing himself and what he has done in the past. He was original an animator at Walt Disney Studios and even was director on the Fox and the Hound. At some point he moved over to WDI (Imagineering, the people who create the theme park attractions).

He told us about the process of how you develop an attraction, how they start off with story boards:

DSC03822.jpg

And then have to sell the idea to the people who make the decision:

DSC03823.jpg

It was an interesting talk and he mentioned that the show is purposely done so that single scenes can easily be replaced. So far, none has, but it is always an option. I think adding in Tangled would be a great idea!

Afterwards there was the possibility to ask questions and I asked what he thought the future of 3D attractions was in theme parks now that people had 3D TVs at home. I am afraid that he did not have a very good answer about that, he was rather evasive. Corinna asked a really interesting question as well. At Disneyland Paris there is a show called Animagique. It is a stage show which kind of has a similar back story with Donald doing stuff that he is not supposed to do and then he ends up travelling through various films. Corinna asked whether this somehow inspired Philharmagic. It was quite obvious that Mr Scribner had never heard of that show in Paris. I found that a bit strange as I would have thought that in order to design something new, they would look at what has been done before and use that as a starting point for their new ideas. Still, it was definitely an interesting talk!

Afterwards we moved on to the next event, called the Steering Committee Q&A. The Steering Committee is the highest level of officers on the ship. They were all taking time to talk about how it is to run a ship and answered questions. This was held in Wavebands.

DSC03825.jpg

It was the captain, the chief engineer, the hotel director, the HR person and the cruise director. Nearly all of them had been with DCL for a very long time. Only the hotel director was totally new. He just had come from Celebrity Cruises and this was the first cruise that he was in charge. He had done some on shore training with DCL first and then shadowed hotel directors on the various ships before taking over the Wonder.

I found it really interesting – some questions people asked were more interesting to me than others, but in general I thought it was a really nice talk and I got the impression that this was a team that was working very well together. I asked how they were dealing with food supplies for the cruise and I got the answer that they indeed take nearly everything onboard in Miami for the full two weeks. They have the possibility to replenish during the cruise if they run out of something. I think they said that they bought bananas in Cartagena. And they said that for some destination cruises they try to get local suppliers for certain special items. One thing that was mentioned was fish during the Alaskan cruises. I mentioned that to Katharina that we might get special things for our Norwegian cruise and the reply I got back was that she does not really care whether she gets stinky goats cheese (there is a very special goats cheese that is a Norwegian speciality, I think you can even get it in the Norway pavilion in Epcot).

One question we found rather baffling was one lady commenting on that she had spent 5 weeks on the Wonder last year and now she finds the music being played in Triton’s very repetitive and whether they could not change that. We really liked the music in Triton’s!!

Afterwards we headed to the Outlook Café and got coffee and little cakes. Michael fell in love with these:

DSC03834.jpg

Little Mango tartlettes. We also looked down to the adult pool and there was so much water on the floor!! They came out with machines moping it up, but then it would rain again and the water was back!!

DSC03830.jpg

At some point the rain was less, even though more rain was forecast. Therefore they decided to cancel the Welcome to the Pacific Pool Party. I was very sad about that as I had looked forward to the party!

We spent some time in the pool, there it did not matter if it rained on us!

Tonight’s show was Toy Story the Musical. I thought this show was really not enjoyable at all on our last cruise and knew I would not want to see it ever again. Michael however wanted to make sure that his memory of the show being bad was correct and decided to go and see it. I told him that I would be in Diversion reading and to come and find me there after the show.

In Diversions I found some pre-dinner snacks:

DSC03835.jpg

Yes, not the most informative picture! There were also chicken wings, hotdogs, olives and corn chips.

Diversions was not crowded at all:

DSC03837.jpg

I was surprised where Michael was as the Navigator said the show would be 45 minutes. It turns out that the show is one hour. Not sure why the Navigator is wrong.

When Michael came back he knew that his memory had not been incorrect. Next time we are on the Wonder, we both don’t have to see that show! I was very happy that I decided not to go.

Tonight’s dinner was in Triton’s (with the repetitive music) and the menu was World of Flavour (link: http://disneycruiselineblog.com/menus/world-of-flavour-dinner-menu/)

DSC03853.jpg

This was a “themed” menu that featured dishes from all over the world. Including Germany! Of course I had to try all the German offerings!

We started out with a German bread selection and spread. At least according to the menu which announced Pretzel Sticks with Liverwurst Spread. Oh, I was so excited!!!

This was the spread:

DSC03843.jpg

And then we got this bread basket:

DSC03844.jpg

And this is the full basket that we got! Yes, it had half a pretzel stick in it! We asked for more pretzel bread since we obviously both wanted to try it. Our server told us that he could only bring us another basket with the same selection as that is pre-determined. Sorry, I thought this was totally ridiculous. You don’t have special breads on your menu and then have bread baskets which mean that only one person on the table can have the speciality!

And just to point out how small the piece was, here it is on my bread plate with the butter knife:

DSC03845.jpg

We ended up getting the second basket and the bread was actually really good. It tasted like the typical frozen before baking pretzel bread that you can buy here everywhere and it was good. Of course, there is far better quality available here in Germany, but for a cruise ship it was totally satisfying. Also, the liverwurst spread was very tasty, it was rather creamy and tasted very much like something you would get here.

There were a lot of really interesting things on the menu, so I ended up ordering three appetizers.

I started with the Norwegian Smoked Salmon Blini – Smoked Salmon on Buckwheat Blini topped with Sour Cream, Caviar and Chives:

DSC03846.jpg

I had expected the blinis to be more like warm pancakes, but this was very tasty! I loved the addition of the lemon zest!

I also had the Japan Iceberg and Water Chestnut Salad – Iceberg Lettuce, Lima Beans, Shiitake Mushrooms and Water Chestnuts with shaved Carrots and Ginger-soy Vinaigrette:

DSC03849.jpg

At first I thought this was a bit bland, but I actually liked it a lot! It was definitely a bit different than the other cruise food we had so far!

Michael had the same salad.

I then also had the German appetizer, the Germany Green Pea Soup with Knockwurst and Potatoes.

DSC03847.jpg

Green pea soup is really a very common dish here and I really like it very much. There is even something called “Pea Sausage” (Erbswurst) which is a sausage of instant pea soup:

1022-317938-erbswurst_mit_reucherspeck_1020670_145889.png

The soup was very good, just a bit salty for my taste. But that is more a personal preference. I had intended to just try the soup, but in the end ate the whole cup because it was so tasty.

Michael had the Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup with Bacon Bits and Chives:

DSC03850.jpg

I have no memories of any complaints, so I think he liked it!

For my main course I went with the German dish again: Germany Pork Tenderloin Medallions Sauteed Spinach and Golden Brown Spätzle with Caramelized Onions and a Red Wine Reduction

DSC03852.jpg

Well, besides the fact that those were not medallions in my book as I would expect those to be grilled individually, this was an excellent dish. I just thought it was so strange that this was nearly the same dish as what I had the previous night and why would they schedule two menus after each other that had more or less the identical pork loin offered. I can also report that the Spätzle (they used the umlaut Ä on the menu! I liked that!) were decent. Not as good as the ones that we feasted on during a family trip to Freiburg at the restaurant Oberkirch (http://www.hotel-oberkirch.de/index.html?inhalt=787), but those were the best ones I ever had in my life, so difficult to beat!!

Michael was once again at a loss at what to order, but I strongly suggested that he shoud order the France Chicken Breast “Cordon Bleu” Stuffed Chicken Breast with Ham and Swiss Cheese Coated with Breadcrumbs, served with Snow Peas and Roasted Peppers. I was able to convince him and it turned out that this was his favourite dish of the whole cruise (besides Palo, I think, but I am not even sure about this).

DSC03851.jpg

This day I got the idea of ordering some decaffeinated coffee to have with dessert:

DSC03856.jpg

The coffee is not that great, but it was nice to have something warm to drink after the meal and I think this is something that I will do more in the future!

For our deserts Michael had the Sweet Temptations which were USA Baked NY Cheese Cake, Germany Chocolate Torte filled with Apricot Jam and France Passion Fruit Crème Brulee.

DSC03858.jpg

Since Michael had the German cake (which was what it was: Chocolate cake, so nothing special), I could get something else. And I got the England Old English Warm Bread and Butter Pudding:

DSC03859.jpg

Somehow, those desserts that were supposed to be warm, never arrived at my table warm. This was room temperature. It was good, but would have been much better if it had been warm!

I think we tried to go for our usual evening walk, but deck 4 was closed due to the weather. It definitely was not nice enough outside to have a pool/deck party!!

In our room we had a new little friend:

While I was on the Wonder a few weeks after you, I had the pleasure of getting to know one of the choreographers and costume designers for the shows and they informed me that they will be removing Toy Story (thank goodness cause I didn't enjoy it either). They didn't give a time frame and they couldn't give a straight answer but allowed me to ask questions. It seems they are currently staging a Frozen musical in Toronto for the Wonder.

It is such a shame that Toy Story isn't better. I actually thought it was great from all technical aspects (acting, singing, stage, props etc.), but neither the story nor the music really spoke to me. I love the idea of having a real musical show that tells a story as compared to Golden Mickey and Dreams which are more about the single elements from various films.

It will be interesting to see what they are going to come up with at replacement! I would not be surprised if it turns out to be Frozen. I really need to see that film soon!!! :goodvibes

So glad to hear this. On a post on the dis, someone said that the frozen show was going on magic. Hopefully it will be on the wonder too.

This was the first of four sea days in a row! I had been looking forward to that part of the cruise a lot. I really love sea days. But I was also a little bit afraid if things would not end up being too monotonous.

I remember at some point on the cruise feeling like I'd seen everything the ship had to offer. 4 days at sea might be too much for me! Maybe I just get claustrophobic after a while.

And he got some pleasure in pointing out that we had gotten a tiny dent due to Captain Fabian being “incompetent”. There was some steak underneath the cheese slices. And Michael said it was ok, but was not in love with it either. He expected something else.

I would have expected something else, too. Like a cheesesteak, for instance.

Sorry, Magdalene. I think Michael wins this round. :rotfl2:

Good call! It looks and sounds delicious.

All caught up!

Now, that was one RAINY day. But it looks like you found plenty to do.

I had to LOL, as the "Philly Cheesesteak" looked like something they offered on the Magic as well. :lmao:
And your breadbaskets are as sad as ours had been. But to serve HALF of a pretzel stick is a bit on the odd side.

I like your menu choices and would so have loved the breadpudding, but again, I would have prefered it hot too.

And I am not sad to see Toy Story go. There are just a few shows I love to see again and again and Aladdin is one of it! Can't remember if you have been on the Fantasy before (but I think you have not). If you sail on her that is a MUST SEE!!!!

I'm sorry you had such a rainy day, but it looks like you enjoyed it anyway! I bet the presentation by George Scribner was really interesting!

I'm so disappointed to hear that the Toy Story show isn't very good! I was really looking forward to seeing that when we sail on the Wonder (some day...).

I remember at some point on the cruise feeling like I'd seen everything the ship had to offer. 4 days at sea might be too much for me! Maybe I just get claustrophobic after a while.

Ah, a cruise is not only about seeing things!! But about relaxing! Once you are as old as I am, you will understand!!! ;)

So much rain! Sorry the weather was so nasty.

Fortunately it did not last!

My goodness. I have lived in the Philadelphia area my whole life. This dish is just insulting. What in the heck is that?? Come to the Philadelphia area sometime, and I will treat you and Michael to a proper Philly cheesesteak.

I will make sure to take you up on this offer!! I am sorry that you were offended by cruise food...

I would have expected something else, too. Like a cheesesteak, for instance.

:lmao:

I would have loved this! Being an Imagineer is still my dream job.

Those talks were definitely one of the bonus features they had for our longer cruise! So, maybe you would have been able to hold out longer on the ship if there were enough interesting lectures? ;)

Somehow, I think I'm with Katharina on this.

I have no interest in smelly goats cheese either!

You're going to get wet anyway!

Exactly!:thumbsup2

His memory was correct. :crazy2:

You did not like Toy Story either? :scratchin

Come on, people! Now they've insulted both Philadelphia and Germany on the same day.

:goodvibes

Sorry, Magdalene. I think Michael wins this round. :rotfl2:

I think you are right! I would have loved to get a taste of his soup, but I know he is very possessive about food that he likes... So I did not even bother to ask!

Good call! It looks and sounds delicious.

I agree - but see above as to why I can not report on wether it also tasted delicious...

All caught up!

It was an interesting experience to be on the ship for a rainy day. It also made me less concerned about our Norwegian cruise next summer where it could easily happen that it is cold and rainy all the time. Of course, I would prefer to be on the Wonder with the Outlook Cafe for that... But I am sure we will find plenty to do on those two sea days anyway!

So, were your breadbaskets on the Dream and the Wonder better? I need to read through your previous reports and look at pictures... It is a small thing, but it kept bothering me to a certain extent. I think because it made DCL look pretentious and that is something I just can't stand! You either deliver the level of quality/service that you announce, or you don't announce it. If it had just been: "selection of bread" I would have been perfectly happy with the bread baskets.

I have not yet been on the Fantasy and haven't seen Aladdin at Disneyland either. But I recently watched Aladdin on DVD (got a fabulous set with 20 Disney DVDs, the 20 most successful movies in Germany) and really loved the film!! So, I definitely would want to see that! Which other shows are the ones that you would like to repeat?

I'm sorry you had such a rainy day, but it looks like you enjoyed it anyway! I bet the presentation by George Scribner was really interesting!

I'm so disappointed to hear that the Toy Story show isn't very good! I was really looking forward to seeing that when we sail on the Wonder (some day...).

It was a good day despite the rain! Thanks to special events like the George Scribner talk!

And if you haven't seen it, give Toy Story a try. There are people out there who like the show! But maybe place yourself at the end of a row towards the back of the theater... ;)
