If you live in Massachusetts do you call yourself a Bostonian?

I'm a displaced Mass hole. I never refered to myself as a Bostonian because: 1) I'm not from Boston and 2) I don't have a Boston accent. I'm a 3rd generation North Attleborian and just told people I'm from MA, or Se Mass. Much like Western MA, I'm from an area people (especially traffic reporters) think doesn't exist.

If I'm out of New England and people ask me for more specifics, I just say I grew up 15min from Foxboro. Sports fans always seem to know the significance of that :thumbsup2

I've never said I'm from Boston, I always say Central Massachusetts. I rarely use my city name because most people don't know where it is. Sometimes, though, people will ask how far from Boston we are. It makes sense, though, since it is the one city in Mass that most people have heard of.

No I don't consider myself a Bostonian I'm from the Cape. If you were born and raised on the Cape then your a snob (at least that is waht my Grandmother used to call me, The Cape Cod Snob) and only refer to yourself as a Cape Codder. On the other hand, I did go to college in Boston for 4 years so I'm a little bit of a Bostonian.:goodvibes Wow, right now I kinda confused, what am I?:confused3

I say I live right next to Salem, MA and most people have heard of that. I don't consider myself a Bostonian I would call myself an New Englander.

If I say I'm from Massachusetts, the other person always says "Oh, you're a Bostonian". So I usually say that I live in a distant suburb of Boston, or that I live "x" miles from Boston.

I'll always be a city gal at heart. I was born and grew up in Boston, South Boston. I go back every week from the Cape several times. I just love the city!

I can't stand it either when people say they are from Boston and they are from the Suburbs.
It's just like people say they are from the Cape and when I ask them where abouts they don't even live over the bridge. You have to live over the bridge to be a Cape Codder!
My son is a native here on the Cape and lives in Boston (he hates the city). I live here on the Cape and love the city. What's wrong with our family LOL

So you shouldn't say your a Bostonian IMO, just that your from MA if you never lived in Boston...have you visited?? that may count LOL

No, I am not a Bostonian. I do not live in Boston. I tell people I am from Massachusetts.

I grew up about 30 miles north of Boston and never considered myself a Bostonian.

It depends on who I am speaking to. When in Europe, I am from the U.S. When on the West Coast, I am from Massachusettes. When in Disney, I am from Boston. When in New England, I am from 'North of Boston'. Otherwise, I am from my hometown...10 miles north of The HUB. :)

I am a Plymouthean. Much better than a Bostonian...we were here first!

Outside of MA I usually say "just north of Boston" because no one has heard of Malden. If I'm driving in another state, I just claim "mass hole" to explain the bad habits!
Among my friends we just make stuff up-my best friend is Saugonian - he grew up in Saugus, I'm a Beverlite, yup, grew up in Beverly.

I grew up in Needham, MA. Lived there until I was married at age 25yo. Living in Needham I spent all my time IN Boston. Even attending college in Boston. I have a Boston accent. DH & I lived in many states after being married as he was with the railroad. I am now living (10 years) in South Central Ma, or outside of Worcester on the CT line.

If I am away (yes, due to the accent) I say I am from Boston....habit, just habit. I almost RARELY say Massachusetts. If I am traveling in a New England state I WILL say MA. If in Disney or across the country or in Europe I say BOSTON. People KNOW Boston.

Hey! You were close by, were in Wellesley.

If Im in MA, I say Wellesley, if im in US (not Disney) then I say Massachusetts, if im in Disney, I usually say Boston.

I was born in Boston but only lived in Boston itself for two years after college. I was in Mission Hill. My apartment before and after Mission Hill were both in Brookline. Sure I could walk to Boston but knew I didn't live in Boston. Right now I live about 5 miles north of Boston and would just say I live near Boston or in the greater Boston area unless I'm talking to someone local or someone who knows the area than I'm more specific. Actually I lived in NH from 5 until college so if someone asks me where I'm from my automatic thought is NH. What I don't understand is once I was talking about hotels. I mentioned Holiday Inn in Brookline and the person mentioned that would be nice since it is right in Boston (no it is in Brookline though very close to Boston). However when I mentioned Best Western Terrace Inn which is on Commonwealth Ave in either Allston or Brighton - don't remember now - the person said that wasn't good because he only wanted to stay in Boston.

I am curious. Many posters here have said they say they are from Boston when at Disney as opposed to other places in the country. Why?:confused3

We have met so many people who work at Disney that are from Mass. On our last trip, our server at HoopDeDoo was from Dorchester and had been in Florida for 16 years. Our Bus driver one night was from Chelmsford. When sharing where you are from at Disney, it just seems to pinpoint where you live by saying Boston. Of course after speaking to these folks we told them exactly what town, and it was so nice that they knew where our hometown was! :)

I'm another person from western ma., otherwise known as the forgotten part of the state. I have nothing even close to a Boston accent. When people ask me where I'm from I tell them Amherst, if they don't know where that is I just mention I live down the road from Amherst and Hampshire Colleges, UMASS, and 10 minutes from Mt. Holyoke College. Most people have heard of those schools ( although UMASS is still thought of as ZOOMASS around here ).

No.

Born and raised in central Mass and I always say I'm from Massachusetts or New England.

:thumbsup2 Me too...when people ask where in Mass and I say Central Mass they ask where, I tell them and they say oh is that near Boston??? Umm no about an hour away, lol!:rotfl:

And it always will be, after that debacle following the last football game....my DD just transferred out of there, because it was so ridiculous! And she thought it would be fun....:sad2:

I am a Cape Codder. I dont connect myself to Boston except to tell people where Massachusetts is.
