If you discovered that your engagement "diamond" was moissanite

While I would not be in the least upset to have a moissanite ring, it WOULD upset me if he specifically tried to pass it off as a diamond. That would speak to character. I can handle thrifty, but not a liar.

If he tried to pass it off as a real diamond I would be POed. If he said it was moissanite I would be fine with it. In fact if I ever get married I don't even want a diamond as the main stone in my ring. I would rather have moissanite or even a sapphire or emerald.

My husband gave me a modest sapphire ring because that's all he could afford at the time. Then, he had a lovely, but again modest, wedding band made that has 3 diamonds in it (not at all large- the whole ring totals a little over 1/2 carat) and after 30 years I still have people compliment it. On our 15th anniversary, he gave me the rock he couldn't afford earlier. (it was an estate diamond that he had reset) ;)

I would rather have a small, but top quality ring, than a larger, flashier, but lesser quality one.

I will also be passing my mother's and grandmother's diamonds down to my children so that they will not be purchasing any Blood Diamonds.

Tazicket: I was engaged in high school, oddly enough also a cheerleader engaged to a (former) football player (he was three years older than me and therefore out of high school after my freshman year). I picked that ring out myself, so I knew it was real (diamond & tanzanite). IMHO, that girl dodged a bullet. Being engaged that young = not so fun. My guy was in the Marines by that point, and it seems as if all these military men like to marry ASAP. The relationship fell apart because he was gone so often.

I wouldn't mind a moissanite engagement ring if I knew ahead of time that it was moissanite and not a diamond. If I ever get engaged again, I'd like a ring that isn't *just* a diamond anyway. My cousin's $8k engagement ring is a huge emerald (her birth stone) surrounded by diamonds.

Dispersion
Moissanite has a dispersive power nearly 2.5 times greater than that of diamond. This creates whats known as the disco-ball effect. Some think that this excess fire is beautiful; others think it cheap and fake looking.

Color
It is impossible to produce a pure white moissanite. The stones have a quality known as fluorescence that causes them to appear slightly green or gray. This effect is much greater under natural light. In a jewelry store a moissanite dealer will always show the stones under a pink tinged light, as this tends to cancel out the fluorescence. Many people say they love their moissanite stone until they get it into the sunlight.

Cost
Due to its relatively extensive manufacturing process and the fact that it is only available from one source, moissanite tends to be quite expensive (though still cheap when compared to diamonds) good quality moissanite stones run around $525 per carat.

yep!

I love, love, love the moissanite ring that DH got me for Christmas. While it didn't cost as much as a diamond ring of the same size, it wasn't cheap.

I would've been peeved, though, if DH lied to me about anything big like that. It's a real trust issue, KWIM?

Now, what kind of stone my neighbors think I have OTO... :rotfl2:

I've put my moissanite side by side with my diamonds...the moissanite looks like it's a very good diamond. No odd colors (???) no disco ball (???). (Maybe these are problems with inferior vendors. Or, maybe it's said to discourage interest.) I do think there are lots of jewelers who'd prefer that customers never hear about moissanite-it does cut into their diamond sales. ;)

Is her relationship that superficial that she's going to base her marriage on a stone. That's very sad.

Moissanite are very expensive and very beautiful.

If it was my ring, I'd be mad because my diamond isn't that big, and if my DH was going to go cheapo with fake diamonds, I'd expect a bigger rock!

Well, maybe the guy never said anything but "Will you marry me?" and gave her the ring, and she just assumed it was a diamond. Maybe he did too.

Frankly, I think HE dodged a bullet...he got to see before it was too late just how shallow she is, and how "real" her love was.

Awwww....but liars are a dime a dozen...

If he lied and said it was a diamond I would be mad. I don't know that I would dump the guy though.

[I know this isn't a debate about Moissanite but I thought I would add my love of it anyways]

I actually have a moissanite solitaire engagement ring set in white gold and I LOVE it. I had no interest in a diamond. Frankly you cannot tell the difference unless you are a professional and I was afraid to wear something so expensive all the time. However that doesn't mean moissanite is cheap, but in a diamond in the same clarity and everything it would have been about $18,000. I don't go around telling everyone its moissanite, but if they ask I'll tell. Theres no way I could have gotten the size stone I did if we had gone with a diamond.

Now, I don't know about anyone else, but when my DH proposed he was really excited and immediately told me all the details about my ring. He told me the story about shopping for it, the cut, everything. I would think this isn't an unusual attitude, so I guess I don't understand why he wouldn't have mentioned what sort of stone it was.

If he was trying to pass it off as a diamond, that's just wrong. If he'll lie about that, what else is he lying about?
