If you could design the next DVC resort...

...what would it be like? The other day I was thinking about how cookie cutter the accomodations are at DVC and how it would be nice to have a little more variety. What would your next DVC resort be like? Where would it be located? etc.

Here is mine:

It would be located on the monorail but would not share facilities with an existing property. I haven't really decided on a theme yet. Instead of offering studios, 1br, 2br, 3br, it would offer several different types of new accomodations. For example for the family of 5 whose kids are not quite old enough to sleep in the 2nd br of a non dedicated, or you don't want your kids on the couch, there could be a 1.5 br (or I guess a minuture 2-br. Where the current balcony is off of the master it could be turned into (with some more space added) a mini bedroom with bunks. The master bedroom would then have a regular size windowed door with a mini balcony. Or maybe, there could be loft 1 br's. I would also expand the living room area and take out the kitchen and make a kitchenette like in he studios. Also, and this may just be my imagination, it seems like all of the resorts with the expection of OKW, have the master on the left and the studio on the right. Flipping the rooms occasionly would help too. The pool area would be a water park type theme without sand, and there would be more grills, and a nicer playground. I would also like to see the resort for members only.

I would definitely like to see a DVC only resort on the monorail loop. I would like to see a Storm Along Bay type pool with a great slide, how about some sort of Asian theme, what do you think? I own at BWV and BCV but really like the idea of an OKW or SSR where you are not connected to another resort but stand alone.

I'd put it on the monorail system, but not necessarily within the MK loop--even if that meant extending a new spur of track. I'd give it strong theming and a short walk into at least one of the parks (AK comes to mind).

Inside, I'd add a few square feet to the rooms to bring them up toward OKW in size.

hey I am still hoping for the Cont rumor to come true....

I think DVC needs to look at the bunk bed ideal - all through most of the top timeshares do not have bunk beds - so I understand their resistance to it.

I was kindna hoping with VWL since WL had bunk beds that they might have consider bunk beds for the DVC resort - but if they did they decided not too.....Would have fit it very well see the theme here - the builder place to sleep....

with SSR no way would bunk beds fit that theme - much to fancy - a beautiful resort in all ways - but I don't see bunk bed in that theme.

Stand alone DVC resort also have to consider all the charges to maintain them. On the monrail with a major pool w/o sharing - you are talking major bucks here in annual fees - and I mean MAJOR - this would probably cost in annual fees alone $10 a point NOW - so I don't know if I would buy there. and I am sorry but this would be very expensive so high style to sell it would necessary - so I would not expect bunk beds.

How do you figure that maintenance fees at this dream-monorail DVC resort would cost $10/point? It doesn't make any sense.

the monrail system is the highest transportation cost at WDW period.

SALB is the highest pool cost at WDW resort.

put them together - and yes - very high cost. the BCV is not paying the full cost of SALB - because the BC/YC have and this pool is not new. but to built it now and the cost of the lifeguards (they are several at SALB) - oh yea - very high annual fee costs.

remember when someone was saying that the new pool at SSR would be like SALB - well it isn't even close. - why - probably because DVC looked at the cost - and decided not to go that fancy because DVC members must pay for everything once the developer quits building.

So you are asking for two of the most expensive things in a DVC resort without a WDW resort to share the cost.

I'd put a resort near the Animal Kingdom because that park doesn't have a DVC yet.

I'd offer 2 types of studios: one with a sofa bed + king bed, and one with bunks + a king bed.

Needless to say, it would have a super-duper pool and grand villas.

Spiceycat, bunk beds wouldn't work at all for us. We bought into DVC to get more room and more privacy. Bunk beds squeeze more people together into fewer rooms. Our family did bunk beds once at WL. We felt like the four of us were in the closet and we kept looking for the door that would open us into the real room! We bought into DVC immediately afterwards, we hated it so much.

I for sure would vote for a resort on the monrail. Also like the idea of members only. Since there are several folks who perfer different types of rooms or beds this could be the resort to do it. Getting off the subject a bit.... I would like to see the one villas have a patio door straight to a pool. I also think this would be great place to have a resort have sections for families and sections for couples. Sort of like OKW but the villas would all surround a pool and entrance to the pool could be done by your villa. Each villa grouping could have different themes. Back to members only..... This resort could have special accomodations for members such as shuttle service to certain locations for a small fee.

I cannot tell a lie. I'd love to have one on the monorail... a new monorail that connects MGM w/ AK at the very least. I'd love the theme to be along the lines of India w/ turbans and harem-ish designs. I can see it all so well in my mind but am unable to explain it very well. Scroll work and turqoise and gold filigre', beige walls and tigers and elephants w/ the platforms on them throughout the theme. A real maharajeh jungle trek kind of theme situated near enough to AK but not necessarily within walking distance. And even though I personally don't care for curried foods, an awful lot of people do and would make for a great themed restaurant. Maybe even dining on pillows w/ big plumed feathers fanning. Sorry, I'm getting a little carried away. LOL but hey the question was "if we could design the next DVC resort" not what "we'd like to pay for if we could design the next DVC resort" I understand it's all about the dollars and I'm not interested in it being members only. I think the current situation works well for members and non members.

On the monorail that goes toward EPCOT, with themes based on the individual countries of EPCOT. You could stay at your home resort and try out different "cultures". The fabric used on furniture and bedding could be generic EPCOT stuff (different flags, etc.)

Rather than have bunk beds (a safety issue in my mind), trundle beds where one pulls out from under the other.

Could be a nightmare for DVD, but I can dream ...can't I?

Great topic. Has anyone thought about adding a new DVC resort at one of the water parks? BB could have a mountain ski lodge theme, or a deserted island paradise at TL and something completely different from the Poly.

I haven't thought it through enough to know if it would be practical or even feasible. There may not be enough available land, but you wouldn't have to worry about the pool being big enough. It would certainly change DVC's "pool hopping" policy.

The transportation system is already in place. It might solve some of the AK/AKL transportation problems and feeling like it's cut off from the rest of "the world". The water parks already have different operating hours from the theme parks. Don't the water parks close late afternoon? DVC guests could enjoy special access to the parks before opening or after the parks closes.

I love SAB, but I've only been to BB one time in the past 10 years, primarily because of the crowds and long lines to ride the slides. The afternoon thundershowers are also a big player in why I don't frequent the water parks. However, if there were a DVC resort attached to the water parks, I would be very interested in spending more time there.

A problem that I would see for a members-only resort, would be that owners there would not be able to trade out for II or Concierge Collection. These trades are possible b/c DVC can rent the DVC resorts to non-members for cash when a DVC member trades out. Some members do not do trades, but we do, and appreciate being able to.

II is an exchange company - they kept the DVC villas that they get and exchange them to their members. (and would love more.....)

all DVC resorts will participate in all the programs - doesn't matter if it is a member only resort - both OKW and SSR are members only type resorts - but DVD kepts their 5% in case of problems and if not rents them out.

Fantasy Theme (Knights, Princesses, etc.)

Underwater theme. Ok, not really, but half-underwater. "Rooms" are all two levels, upper level looked out onto a water scape, and the lower level rooms have windows that look into a lagoon underwater. Imagine if kids had a window wall in the bedroom that looked into the water and could watch the fish swim.

Would be neat if in the rooms you had single bed niches in the wall in addition to the bed in the room. That way kids or singles have a place to sleep as well as a regular queen bed. You could work the inside decorations around the themes.

Build an area somewhere for a pack-n-play crib that isn't either the bedroom or the living room. We have grandparents going with my wife and 1 year old daughter in a two bedroom.....

this is far fetched, but..... how about a water "ride" that connects to a transportation hub. would it be a lot more expensive if you had something like the flume boat or circular boat that floated down to epcot or something?

How about using a defined path but golf carts on rails? again, looking for something individual/cheap that kids would love beside a big hulking bus.

I think bunk beds can fit any theme. I've seen very fancy built in bunks in many high end model homes (off hand, I'm thinking of HGTV's dream home from last year...though they were separate single beds IIRC). I'd much prefer kids in bunk beds rather than having to make up the sleeper sofa every day. It also seems that there are so many families of 5 and 6 these days (at least where I live)...I wish DVC would take that into consideration.

Having DVC close to a waterpark is an interesting idea! I never would have thought of it. We went to Blizzard Beach in June and fell in love with the place. Sure is a long bus ride from SSR, though! Not a huge fan of AK though.

If they can't extend the monorail everywhere within WDW (which is my true dream), I'd really like to see a whole new park that rivals MK or EPCOT, and attach a DVC resort with the same theming as the park. I hope it would have very deluxe features when it comes to the pools, restaurants and common areas. I haven't thought much about the theme specifically. There are so many options!

DVC does take that into consideration. That's why there are 2BR DVC condos. One bathroom isn't enough for a family of 5 or 6 either.
