If you are running late in the morning

My name is Miss Jasmine and I am a speeder. I normally drive 10 mph to 20 mph over the speed limit depending on traffic, conditions and the law enforcement agency. I do not ride anyone's butt though unless they are in the left-hand lane not passing anyone, then I think you are free game. In my area, this is a frequent occurance thanks to all the eldery drivers who think they can hang out in the left hand lane doing 10 mph UNDER the speed limit.

I was flipped off this morning by some witch. She came up behind me out of nowhere, doing about 65 in a 45 mph zone...flew right up on my tail, so I slowed down and gave her a brake check (yes, wrong, I know). She starts flipping out, screaming at me and flips me the bird. :rolleyes2

LOL I must admit I am a big "brake checker". If it's just me in the van and someone is really on my behind for NO good reason, I will just slam those puppies. Hehehe I drive the speed limit. Sometimes 3 miles over, but never more. Never had a ticket or been pulled over in 21 years. There are reasons for those speed limits. Plus I'm a little OCD about following rules anyway. And like another post here I also love when they zoom past me, then we end up at the same light or me even a car ahead. LOL I gloat out loud to my crazy self. "Boy, you sure drove awful fast there buddy, just to get nowhere." That's the extent of my road rage. :)

I hate tailgating, and DH drives me nuts with it because he's so used to city driving. I never ride anyone's butt (without buying dinner first :teeth: ), but the other day I had some woman get nuts with me because, in her opinion, I was tailing her!

It was nuts. We were sitting in stopped traffic that was backed up maybe half a mile -- that's a huge traffic jam for my small town. I was maybe five feet from her bumper, just edging up every time traffic moved. All of a sudden she starts slamming on her brakes. She'd edge up real quick and when I'd edge with her, she'd slam on the brakes. Then she started gesturing at me through her side mirror, then when I didn't react to her, she rolled down her window and started yelling at me.

I was five feet from her!!! :confused3 In traffic!

I just did the crazy gesture and proceeded to ignore her. All I could figure was that she thought I was closer than I was -- she was in a huge pickup truck and I was in a compact SUV that has a short front. She probably couldn't see the front of my car and only saw me through the window.

Some people are just morons.

Oh, and for the brake check people -- do you really want to take a chance of someone hitting you? I know you're angry that someone's invading your space, but just because they're being unsafe, doesn't mean you should be. Keep your head on straight and stay safe! I remember being utterly terrified as a kid when I was on the highway with my uncle. He would do that all the time with kids in the back seat. I was always so scared someone wouldn't be able to stop in time and would kill us.

Wrong alright and possibly the only thing aobut the whole situation that put anybody in danger.

We don't do the 'brake check' thing around here... just slow down and (if feeling particularly malicious) drive really slow... :teeth:

The people that bother me though are the ones who drive like 40-50mph in a 70 limit, and then carry on at 40mph in the 30 limit!

Actually speeding up to someone's bumper and tail gating is considered reckless driving.

Maybe I should clarify what I mean by the brake check thing (not sure what others mean by it). I mean simply tapping on the brakes a time or 2. Not even enough to slow down, but sometimes when someone is on my tail they aren't doing it in an aggressive way, but they just aren't paying attention and it's a reminder to back off and usually they do. I've had people do it to me (not that I normally tailgate, but I can't say that I never have been too close to someone).

When the man was tailgating me Monday I did slow down when I realized how much over the speed limit I was going (40 in a 30 zone) and I would have slowed even if nobody was in back of me. His actions were extremely aggressive. Mine were not until I got to the flipping off part, which was pure stupidity on my part and I should have called 911 before doing that since that man was crazy.

Thanks for explaining the brake check. That's what I do, too. If someone's tailgating me, I certainly don't slam on my brakes... they're already too close as is and the last thing I want is to be rear-ended.

However, most people don't take it as a warning and a few do immediately spin into road rage mode. I try to let them fly by, slowing down to give them plenty of space or if necessary, turning off on another road or parking lot. Obviously, they are much more important than I am as they need to get to where they are going so quickly.

*BZZZZT* No, sorry... we were looking for speeding and tailgating. Pick another category, please.

Yes, that's what I do. I wouldn't risk hurting someone or smashing my truck by slamming on the brakes or stopping in the middle of the road. I gave her a brake check and then drove slower than I originally was, which ticked her off.

That guy was nuts! The freeway was packed and when he slammed on his brakes, everyone behind us had to do the same thing. Who in their right mind does that on an interstate?????

If that guy would have made us get rear ended and my two daughters got injured, he'd wish it was my DH coming after him, because he would have been dealing with one :furious:, PMSing female. I'd have ripped him a new outlet.

Someone actually did that to me 2 weeks ago. This woman slammed on her breaks on a parkway and just decided to go up on the shoulder. She did not slow down then stop, she just floored her break pedal going 65. She was maybe 100 ft from an exit ramp too. It scared the daylights out of me that the person behind me wasn't going to stop.
The scary part is though, the same thing happened to my friend about an hour later on the same parkway. Except she got into a pretty bad accident. She is ok but her car is not.

Oh and when I break check, I do what T&B described. I don't slam on my breaks (as stated above it is very dangerous), I just give them a tap or two. Sorta of a way to say "Go away!".

Even when Goofy was learning to drive, he was taught the two second rule of braking.

Nevermind. I should have noticed whose thread this was.

This particular person actually made us come to a complete stop in the left lane on I-10. Scared the crap out of me!

And it was his fault. He just decided to get over, when we were already there.

What a loser. :sad2:

So is "brake checking".

And that would be why it's automatically your fault if you hit someone in the rear? :confused3 Don't need to explain yourself when you hit the brakes. If someone hits you in the rear when you brake, it's their fault. Period.

I wish I knew. I can understand being in a hurry to get home AFTER work, or get home for the weekend, or for vacation, or a holiday. But going TO work... :confused3

My point exactly! :thumbsup2 :teeth:

I used to do the brake check thing...but I've become a bit more subtle in my maturity ;) . I just take my foot off the gas. I gradually slow down to the speed limit (or even just below) and cruise merrily along and whoever is behind me can pass (hopefully with GUSTO and there's a trooper just ahead! :rotfl: )
