On Saturday I attended my sister's college graduation...she is 48 years old, it took her 6 years, she had to take algebra 3 times...but she did it! And she was by no means the oldest graduate...there was one lady who looked to be about 60. The speaker for their class was a 40 year old who was layed off after 9-11 after almost 20 years as a flight attendant...she took the opportunity to finish her degree.

So if all the graduations around you are depressing you, do something about it...enroll in college or a class or get an additional certification or training...time will pass and you will be just as old in 4 years whether or not you improve your job prospects!!!

Thank you for the pep talk! I have started to take classes in a field unrelated to my previous schooling, and have thought about maybe getting a degree in this area. I was feeling old and wondering if it was even worth doing.........so your post was just what I needed!

I know I feel awkward about going back to school this fall...and I'm only 22. Everyone I graduated from high school with just graduated, so I feel weird about going back....I know it sounds pathetic....but it feels weird. Its the right move though, film school....the dreams of being the next speilberg...it was nice, but just felt so unfullfilling.

I'm going back to college and I am going to be a high school teacher. Do something meaningful...I hope.

Of course, I will keep up my screenwriting....still looking for an agent to sell my screenplays....they're great..so if any of you are big time agents or producers... ImagineerM@aol.com

Well it is too late if you aren't willing to go into debt to go back to school.

However, I *did* just graduate this Saturday... from docent training. Now I'll be an unpaid volunteer at the State Parks!

I say never to old to school.

I went back to school to finish my college degree in computers. I know it's a dead field now.

I am glad that I finish my college degree for myself. I put myself in a better position when the economy gets better my career will take off because I have 3 years of managements experience to.

Agreed............it is all about the choices we make..........what is important to one person may not be to another.

This is exactly my opinion, too! I had a computer science degree which got me nowhere since everyone else had one, too. Last summer I graduated again, this time with a degree in library science - still looking for a job, so it remains to be seen if this degree will amount to anything as well!

At least I tried!

I really feel for all you folks with the computer science degrees...it just made the news that one of our local universities has stopped offering the major. What a diference a decade makes!

But as you read the want ads, think of all of the ads that say "degree required." They don't care what kind of degree, just that you have a degree. Those kind of jobs probably don't pay what you were making in the computer field, but I bet they're better than what you could get without a degree at all.

I admire the tech people who have bit the bullet and are retraining...a guy I know just finished legal assistant training...he probably won't make as much money as he did 10 years ago, but in my book, working all day in a nice environment for some money is better than being depressed at home for years for no money.

That is sad. All the comp sci majors I knew worked their you-know-whats off for that degree.

I'd have to disagree with the "Comp Sci is a dead area" opinion -- while it's true that a number of the "pure" computer programming jobs might not be around anymore, there's certainly a number of positions (good paying ones) out there where companies are looking for IT people who have additional skills to go along with their IT/CS background. You just have to think outside the box a little.

This is a good post.

I I think some colleges like to really push their programs knowing jobs aren't out there. If you are from WI, MN or MI and want to be a teacher good luck, they are laying 15 teachers off in one school district 10 miles from our town. 6 in my school district. Teaching positions are going to get much worse in our areas before they get better.

We were at an awards banquet in Milwaukee and there were at least 125 girls. They had a bio of each girl in the booklet and over 50% of them said they are going into elementary edu. I had 2 teachers with their daughters sitting at my table and both of them commented that these girls going into teaching, sure don't pay attention with what is going on in the school districts. There are so many budget cuts going on in the mid-west, teachers are being informed every day now about loosing their jobs.

I went to two years of college when I graduated. The first year I was wasting my money. I didn't want to go, but my parents made me. The next year I was married, and I knew I needed some kind of job, so I went for a one year secretarial program. Now we have kids, and all along it has been my goal to be a mom and a wife. I'm going to be a professional volunteer. I want to be able to be there for my kids when they need me, and for any project that might need help with in the community or church, etc.

However, I would love to be able to be good at something and get paid for it if I needed to. I love working on computers. I've done a lot of wedding programs and invitations. I love to plan things. I loved planning our Disney vacation and have thought about being a travel agent. But, I don't know. I don't know what I would want to do. So, if someone can decide what I'm good at, will you let me know?

Thanks for the pep talk/advise! My goal is to go back to college as soon as my children are out of high school. I know I can, we have a great community college here that I can start and do all the courses that they offer before attending a university.

One thing I didn't mention is that the other students in class will benefit from your presence. At first, many of your classes may be lecture classes, but eventually you will be in smaller classes where there is group discussion. As racial, ethnic and gender diversity is beneficial to the educational environment, age diversity is likewise beneficial. Your teachers will be so refreshed to hear something other than the "20 year old" point of view for a change!
