If you are bit by a dog on private property...

My dog (fenced) bit my nephew on Sunday. We'll be putting him down because of this. A yellow lab--I have no idea why he bit him. I'm hoping it doesn't cause horrible strife in my already stressed family.

I'm so sorry to hear this! How is your nephew? How old is your lab? That is unusual for a lab. Do you think the dog was provoked?

My nephew is a mature 18yo, has 3 big dogs of his own and his father is a vet. No provoking but he did give him a Milkbone treat. Doc took it and then growled and snarled and bit his right hand. We took him to the ER where they cleaned it out, gave him meds and on monday he saw a hand specialist to check on nerves etc. He went back there yesterday for recheck and will return next week.
They do not stitch dog bites like this (because of infection, I think?) and so far, he looks to be healing. He will start PT for his hand next week as they are worried about mobility issues.

Our dog is 7 yo. A big baby. We recently moved and he seems content but has growled at a few people. Not sure if it is due to the move or there is something wrong with him.

As I'm reading all of this, all I can think is invisible fence...invisible fence... I would never trust my dog, or any dog to be contained by an invisible fence. (Of course, all of this probably transpired within the confines of the fence) I've watched people chase after too many dogs who run out of their fence and don't want to come back. AND, let's not get started on why people feel compelled to have their invisible fences in the front yard, right against the sidewalk. You can't build a real fence there, so why put an invisible one there?

Trust me, I get worked up enough when I see our neighbor kids running around on our non-fenced property, but I would never trust an invisible barrier to protect my dogs from other people/animals/things just because those things aren't supposed to be on our property.

This is an unfortunate situation, and I feel sorry for the girl

I've been doing census work, and a lot of discussion was about how to deal with dogs on the properties we're visiting. Basically, we know we're taking a chance, have to be careful, but are still expected to get to the door and back. If I wasn't a dog lover, and VERY experienced around them, I don't know if I could do this, because ANY dog can be protective about its house/yard.

And the only dog who *almost* got me was a lab.

Owner should realize that invisible fence is not a fence, child's medical bills should be covered by dog owner (or his insurance), and hopefully the child will learn not to be fearful of dogs in the future and how to approach them (not saying that it was her "fault", just that turning and running is about the worst thing you can do).

oh, i do hope you reconsider putting him down. PLEASE HAVE HIM CHECKED OUT FIRST. He very well may be stressed from moving - that's a lotta commotion, and if he's been in the same place for 7 years, he's probably feeling out his new turf, ya know? Or he very well could be sick, maybe there is something in your new environment that he is not reacting to well (water, plants, etc.)

i'm sorry this happened, but as someone who has had to have her face stitched up from a dog bite as an adult, i can tell you that those scars faded MUCH quicker than the pain of having an animal destroyed on my behalf would.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear this. I can't imagine, you must be heartbroken.
