LOL I think the banks are realizing many of those branches are a waste of money. They can make far more money selling the land for $20m an acre to a developer to build high rise apartments.

Wouldn't the zoning be different?

Not around here. They are building apartments in many of the dying strip malls because they can make way more money selling apartments than they can renting commercial space. Plus they aren't getting any rent from the surface parking lots.
