Pray tell what large metropolitan city in Florida has such a horrific street to cross?:scared1::rolleyes1

YOu obviously don't live where I do in Florida, There are lots of streets her that are bad. Some of them are 3 lanes of each side. I would dare anyone to cross Blanding Bvd in Orange Park, most people don't even like to drive on that road. Including turn lanes it is 6 lanes each way. Lets see if you feel comfortable crossing that with cars coming at 45 to 50 miles per hours.

If she has to constantly tell people she is on break, that is not much of a break, is it?:confused3 You can't be constantly talking to customers and on break at the same time.

Once again pulling stuff out of nowhere who said she would have to keep saying it and that she would have to keep talking to people she could have said it once and if any one else came in and said "where are the employs?" someone would of told who ever came in "she had to take a break"

Just because Florida might not require adults to take breaks, doesn't mean the salon doesn't have rules of their own saying the stylists are required to take breaks. I have worked at places like that in the past and if we didn't take breaks even though it wasn't required by law we were at risk of being fired.
I was about to post the same thing. I know for a fact that it's not a state law here, since my sister's company doesn't require her to take breaks unless she works over six hours, but I'm required to take at least one no matter how long I work.

Exactly the one i was on was that part i was in front of was at least 8 lanes and they go more than 50 :scared1:

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a service person to say "excuse me, I'll be back in __ minutes". Here in CA, rest periods are mandated every 2 hours but I wouldn't leave someone standing there without at least acknowledging them and saying I'll be back in a few.

Maybe the stylist did and the OP wasn't in the salon yet. :)

And her brother "forgot" to mention it? :confused3

OP, what do YOU think should have been done? :confused3 You don't seem to like allot of the replies......so I am wondering what or how this should have been handle?

My sister was a stylist and managed a salon for a number of years. It's a much more physically demanding job than you would think. She had carpal tunnel surgery a few years ago and just had shoulder surgery due in part to repetitive stress from doing hair. Those breaks can be important. She probably wishes she'd taken more of them.

She also said you'd be surprised at how difficult it can be to (a) get good employees and (b) keep them. With what she was permitted by her regional manager to pay employees, it was hard to get people who were reliable and good. If they were reliable and good, they'd often leave for greener pastures--either a better-paying salon, or they'd start their own place.

If employees didn't show, she didn't have the option of just not opening--they had to keep the doors open and do the best they could with what they had.

Bottom line: It's a demanding line of work, which is why she's moved on to something different.

Sorry, I haven't read the whole thread, but are we sure the employee in question was actually a hairdresser? Is it possible she was an employee who was there while the people who actually cut hair were taking a break? We have places here where the hairdressers cut hair, and the "receptionist" checks people in, keeps things in order, and sweeps up for the hairdressers. If there is nothing else to do they hang out in the back, and wait for towels to dry, or straighten up the back room, etc.

OP, have you ever had a job?

Have you ever had a job where you are the only one working?

Have you ever had a job where you are the only one working & you're having a day where you need to keep using the bathroom?

If you have, then you understand why people need to take breaks. There are many reasons, health or the law, why people need or deserve breaks.

You sound very immature. Perhaps you need to experience it before you get to complain about it.

Holy cow, a bunch of a adults piling on a teenager and then calling her immature. :lmao:

What if that is what she did? If you have a busy place, a break may never come. You may have to just make people wait. I agree that she should have told the customers. But, maybe she did and the op wasn't in the salon yet.

Possibly, but I don't think I've seen a strip mall salon that is thatpacked. Even then, employees should know when things are slower and take breaks during that time. And I doubt she told anyone, because per the OP, all the customers left!

Your post comes across as more "high and mighty" than others I've read.

Maybe it does, but I have NO tolerance for lazy, rude employees. If she ever wants to move to a nicer salon or open her own place, she had better learn some better customer service skills.

Well of course, the girl shouldn't have essentially abandoned the shop or the customers. If she was the only one working (which it sounds like she was) it probably would've been a good idea to close up the shop for the 15/20/30/60 minutes her break was going to require.

MAybe she was overwhelmed.

Maybe the other stylist called out sick.

Maybe she was just an idiot.

MAybe she was mixing hair chemicals or on the phone with the Pope.

Who knows? But the point it, after a certain period of waiting, the customers should have just voted with their feet (like the OP did) and left. Now as to the idea that you can't take a break when it's busy? Well, sometimes you have to take a break...busy or not.

Also one thing i just realised is that I DON'T HAVE TO EXPLANE MY SELF TO YOU GUYS! you where not there when it happened.
Uh...YEAH....you, like, totally DO have to "explane" yourself. You were the one coming in here all whining and complaining about what happened, remember? No one asked you, you just, like, up and got all in our faces about having to wait for a hairdresser and when we were like, "DUDE!" you, like, totally were all about talkin' to the hand and stuff.

So...whatever, y'know?
