if i reserve at home VWL and have to change dates what's my options?

Can you guys tell Im new at this? First time using our points will be in 4.5 wks when we step onto the Magic! But Id really like to reserve our vaca for next year before I have to step foot off the Magic or they will be pulling me off!

If I reserve Nov 19 for next Oct 11-19 and later find DS cant get out of school am I stuck with vacationing by myself? What can I then do with my points?

As long as you cancel 31 or more days in advance, your points will simply return to your contract to be used or banked before the end of your use year.

As long as you're not borrowing points, they will be returned into your account and will have to be banked or used according to your use uear guidlines. Also, please keep in mind that you have to cancel before 31 days to not have the points go into a holding account. If you're borrowing points, those points can't be placed back into their original use year and will have to be used by the end of your use year, or be lost.

So i can bank within the Disney collection but if i reserve outside the disney group once they go back into the use year they need to be used during that year.
Disney collection can be cancelled and banked if necessary?

The Disney Collection consists of the non-DVC resorts at WDW and DL plus the Cruiseline. Members cannot bank anything in that collection. Points used to book these reservations are "reservation" points and will retain that status if the ressie is cancelled. "Reservation" points cannot be used at DVC resorts and cannot be banked. They must be used at another non-DVC resort before the end of the use year or they will be lost.

oops - I dont have my book on me - I called them the wrong name - I meant the points at the 5or6 Disney resorts _VWL, BCV, BWV, etc
Once they are used for a ressie, the ressie can be cancelled if necessary, the points put back into our accounts and if necessary the points banked as long as it's not past our banking deadline?

Yes, you are correct. As long as you cancel your reservation at a DVC resort 31 or more days ahead of arrival, the points will return to your account. You may then bank the points, subject to banking deadlines.

If you used banked or borrowed points to make the ressie, the points return to the use year that they were banked into or borrowed into. Bad grammar, but I think you will know what I mean.
