If DVR isn't working will the cable company credit you?

This is really ticking me off. This has happened twice now, shows I record are "there" but there is no video, just sound. The guy said something about "updates." Um, what? Maybe they need to TELL people about these mysterious "updates." Also I can't pause live TV -- when I pause it it freezes and goes to black! I called today and he told me to try and reboot it which I am going to do, but I doubt that will do anything. Do you think the cable company might credit me? IAnyone have any experience getting a credit?

They should. We have successfully gotten credits when the service was out, but we had to ask.

You can probably get a prorated refund of the DVR portion at least (a buck or 2) but what you really want is it fixed. Make 'um come out and fix it! That's what I did - they came out 3 times before they got it right. It was the box in my case - they went through 5 or 6 before it was right.

Happened with Lost last night, my daughter recorded it for me and when I got home to watch, no sound, just picture. I was pissed. We rebooted the digital receiver (unplugged for 20 seconds and then reconnected it) and the sound started working on the DVR playback. Cable was fuzzy and our cable internet was not working and it has been acting up for two weeks now. We call every time and demand a prorated reduction in our monthly fee.

Normally when we have problems with our DVR, rebooting fixes it. Our first DVR was very squirelly, so we upgraded to a better one.

I would think if you asked they would give you a refund, but like the poster above said, it probably won't be more then a couple of dollars.

They will probably credit you. I would call and ask.

Just ask for a new box.

We've had problems at various times with DVR's, too. The cable company has to use the equipment they are given. I believe ours is made by Motorola and I was told that they are trying to make one that works a little better.

Yes, there are updates. Ideally, they shouldn't goof your box up. Sometimes, we run into a problem when our box updates every 45 days.

Anyway, I would call and ask for a credit. Just remember that the cable company usually doesn't make the box itself.

:thumbsup2

Yup, you can get a prorated refund of the portion of your bill that is for the DVR, about 1.3 cents per hour around here.

I just had a Digital box put in and when I found out I could not record off my VCR without a DVR I called and they are going to switch the boxes Monday morning.
I am certainly hoping that mine records (audio/video) without any problems.
I'll be peeved at $13.00 extra a month! Plus installation!

Best $13.00 a month you'll ever spend! DVR is the best!

For just $16.95 per month, you could get a TiVo!

DVR and TIVO are basically the same thing aren't they?
As far as I can tell, my DVR does the same stuff as TIVO.

TiVo is far superior to any DVR out there. So much so that Comcast has now contracted to TiVo to design their next-generation DVR.

The difference is in the user-interface and operating system. It is simply far more intuitive and user-friendly. I had Comcast's DVR for a little while and it was so difficult to operate by comparison. The TiVo technology is really a few steps ahead than the cable company DVRs.

In addition, TiVo has features not available otherwise. I have two TiVos and can watch whatever is recorded on EITHER TiVo on EITHER TiVo. I can record something in the bedroom and watch it in the living room. Also, TiVo supports Season Passes, so if a program is on at an odd time one week, TiVo will catch it, instead of me having to always changing the programs to make up for these one-week perturbations. Also, with TiVo, I can (say) record every program that are about Disney theme parks, just by setting up an auto-recording keyword search.

Our cable company didn't---they just sent someone out to replace it days later. And now it's starting to screw up again. I miss having my TiVo unit because it never messed up anything but I can't afford to pay for a high def. box. Even thought about going back to DirecTv since that's who we had when we were using TiVo but DirecTv's moving away from them & using their own boxes.
