If Disney does't get rid of that darn Tommorrowland Speedway...

Reminds me of Cedar Point. They have one there, too. But their's isn't as noisy or stinky.

The extreme exhaust fumes have got to be against some OHSA laws. Everytime we are near it, I feel sorry for all those CM's that have to work near it. Can you imagine breathing those fumes in all day? It's disgusting.

We are the weird family that has to ride it at least once each vacation and we laugh and laugh. My kids are 20, 17 and 15, and granted it's not their favorite by far, but we have some really funny videos we have taken while on this. We try to race each other which is what is so funny because the cars are so slow- we have had some "accidental bumps" too which just add to it.

I understand that people like the ride and it brings back memories of when they were young or when their kids were younger. Nobody likes to see anything change at Disney.

However, that seems like a prime piece of Disney real estate for a go-cart ride! We have something similar at the local mini-golf fun center. A Cars theme would make it more Disney but they need to find a more environmentally friendly vehicle!

My family rode the Speedway last year for the 1st time in years. It was fun and reminded me of when my teens were little, BUT when I got off the ride my DH noticed that the back and sleeves of my white shirt were literally black from the seats. We were the first riders of the day and the dew made the rubbery seats wet and sticky. Unfortunately, it also made them messy. I never wear good clothes at the parks, so I wasn't too worried about it, but I was a little irritated that I had to walk around all day with sticky black gunk all over my shirt. In the future, I will wait until later in the day if I am going to ride it.

The last time I rode it before this year was back in 1993, that was before the remodeling and changes. And I loved it back then.
I never cared to do it again, until last february when I came back with my son. His first time in WDW and he fell in love with this ride (he's 4).
Now we have 2 "must-do" items on our plan : teacups and speedway.
There is no way we can get within hearing distance of the ride and DS does not beg to drive the cars.

We have a rather similar ride in DLP called Autopia, but even though some say Paris' ride is better, I prefer the speedway in WDW.
I don't care about the fumes, the smell, or whatever, I'm having fun with DS and it's all that matters.
Can't wait for next year, and I know where we'll be headed first before going to discover new fantasyland.

Kids love this attraction.

Agree! My husband and I took our 3 y/o GS to WDW Feb 4th-11th and he insisted on riding it twice. When his dad and mom picked us up at the airport Feb 11th, my son asked him what all he rode. The first words out of his mouth were that he drove a car, rode a train, got "really wet, and I mean really wet:rotfl:" on Splash Mountain, and that he and Nana beat Bopop on Toy Story. On the way home he started talking about the race cars again and when my D-I-L asked him what his favorite ride at WDW was, he gave her a disgusted look and said, "the race cars of course. I got to drive. Nana had to push the pedals, but I drove all by myself. I'm a crazy driver, just like dad". That was an understatement. My neck and back were killing me both times we got off, due to him hitting that middle guide rail so much.lol

I am more surprised they haven't changed the cars to electric motors to save on costs and reduce the noise.

Just get a battery sponsor to pay the costs and slap their sticker on the side of the car.

It is one of those things geared toward 1-4 year olds. They should update it, but I am sure that is why they keep it.

our last trip there my almost 3-year old daughter got such a kick out of "driving".

I do think it could use some updating. Given that it is in Tomorrow Land perhaps it should feature new technology -> like mag-lev cars or at least hybrid/electric cars ... maybe solar powered?

I loathe this ride. Not the idea of it, but the way it is. If ever there was a dated attraction that screamed please retheme me it is this one. Theme it to Cars, upgrade the vehicles to something a little less toxic and I could tolerate it. I was so happy I got to skip it last year-I opted to wait in line for Rapunzel while the guys went to go drive:thumbsup2

My problem with it is the 3rd degree burns I get from those scorching hot black seats that have been sitting out in the sun all day.

All kids, boys and girls love this ride. Just getting behind the wheel makes the ride worthwhile to them. And, usually, Dads love to take them on the ride that he enjoyed when he was their age.

I don't like it either. My sister and I had this discussion when we were there last month. It's old, noisy, smelly and just boring. You don't really have to to anything except press the gas. I don't understand why the line is always so long, it's crazy. The kids like it cause they think they are driving but they really should update it. The Cars theme would be a great thing to do instead.

I think it would require more than just retheming and greening-up of the ride. Many people have stated that they don't ride because of the smell and the lack of theming. So if there are that many people who aren't riding now, and it suddenly became a Cars- (or whatever) themed ride without the terrible gas exhaust smell, imagine how much longer the already-unbearably-long wait would be...? It would take a complete overhaul of the queue and the loading system to make it work, or some way of getting riders on and off faster (doubling up like Dumbo, maybe? dueling speedways? :woohoo: ).

And FWIW, I hate it now but I loved it as a kid. I have the greatest photo of a 5yo me turned around backward in the seat as my dad drove (snapped by my mom in the car behind us). It's priceless. But it would be nice for my kids to make some newer, hipper, less-smelly, shorter-wait-time Disney driving memories.

I understand the gas fumes but I can't understand all the hate being sent the way of the speedway. My kids love that ride, yes they are young but how is it any different then say Dumbo, tea cups etc? It is designed for young kids and from the looks of it they love it. I would think it would be fairly easy for them to get an alternative energy to run them and add a Cars theme.

As far as the noise goes.....well it is a race track and they are very noisy. I hope they don't dump the ride it is a Disney classic and with a few modifications it could be even better than it is now.

Cannot imagine not doing this attraction at least once in our 7 day holiday. We love it and thats from 3 guys in our 50's :)

If it had an upgrade or change certainly wouldn't object but as it is i would and do stand for up to 40 mins for it , longer than that for a Q and we would return later and try again.

Its a fun, simple ride that lets the kids feel like they are driving and in control of the ride. Its not a must see every visit but fun to do when the mood strikes us.
