Here is my take on this.
Tiggermagic - I love ya, but you kind of put words into the OP mouth. I didn't see her once say she felt "owed" a salary. Her exact words were
Kinda stinks, but what do you do.
Then she is shocked and dismayed to realize that the big wig CFO cuts himself a bonus check. Yes I would be a little ticked as well. All the employees have done their jobs for the year, and worked hard - but the company didn't do well - those are the breaks, you don't get a bonus. BUT the CFO does? I mean where is the logic in that?
Now we can debate until the cows come home about whether the bonus the CFO received was A)tied to performance, B)Tied to goals, or C) was part of his contract. We don't know the answer to those 3.
So I can see why after he leaves it laying around for everyone to see why people within his office might be a little ticked off.
That all being said, there is no loyalty. They actually teach you that in college these days. I had several college professors (and I'm a business major) tell us - don't EVER depend on a company because they will cut you loose without losing any sleep over you and your family. If you find a better job, take it. If there is a promotion you want - go for the throat to get it. Because company loyalty doesn't exist on either side of the spectrum. Harsh reality but it is the truth.
Which is why I find it so ammussing when company's complain about turnover or bad employees. They made their bed by treating their employees like crap for years, now people clock in from 8 to 5 and leave. There is no working harder because the company takes care of you mentality.

Short of it the company hasn't had a good years so no one is getting bonuses or christmas gifts this year and freezes raises for next year. Kinda stinks but what do you do.
