Hi all. Just looking for others' perspective of whether or not I am too big a cheapskate or what?!

Twice in the last 3 days...I have been in line for something and at the cashier there was a sign 'You get this FREE if I don't ask....' (at Walgreens on SUnday it was a free Hershey bar if you don't get asked to buy one of them; Today it was at Marshalls and it was a free 2 Liter of COKE if you don't get asked if you want to open one of their credit accounts).

On both occassions, the cashier did NOT ask me the required question. So I waited until the transaction was complete and asked for my freebie. Both times I was treated like I was RIDICULOUS for asking for it. Especially today at Marshalls - I mentioned to the cashier 'What's this about a free Coke?' and she thought I was joking saying 'yeah - well I did forget to ask you, it's just this thing.' and started to walk away. So I said 'well, how do I get it?'. And I ended up getting it no problem.

Am I being too cheap to ask for these promotional things for free? Don't get me wrong I have been a cashier for many years and I think it is ridiculous of the store to require their cashiers to ask this type of thing especially at this time of year when they are SWAMPED. So I do feel bad for the cashiers....But should I not be asking for it?

What's your opinion?

I wouldn't at this time of the year. In fact I would be glad they didn't waste my time with the stupid question, and I"m sure the 15 other people in line would feel the same way!!!!

There is no way I would ask at this time of year, none.

No your not being a cheapskate. I definitely ask for the free item if it's not offered.

Same with me...no way.

Oh and BTW - in both cases there were no lines at all - available cashiers at both. I likely wouldn't have asked with a true line behind me.

You did nothing wrong, if they are not willing to give it then they should not offer it. I don't know if the cashiers get in trouble or if it goes on their record that they did not ask the question but I do not see that as my problem as a customer, that is between management and staff.

ASK already.

the store is pushing these promotions for a reason. Good reminder for the cashier to be called on it, I don't see a problem with it:confused3

I don't know if it's true or not but I remember reading at Toys R Us where you get a free soda or $5 GC (I forget which) if they don't ask if you need batteries or to sign up for a TRU credit card, the amount of the free item comes out of the cashier's paycheck. I feel kind of funny about calling them on it if that is the case so I let it go even though about half the time they never ask.

Nope you are not a cheapskate! I also pay attention to places like Kmart and my local grocery store. A lot of times I am overcharged and I point it out and get items for free and money back. Why am I doing their job for them?

I HATE when I am asked several times in a store to sign up for a credit card (Kohl's is the worst!), get batteries, etc. I would not remind the cashier they forgot to ask me because I don't want them to ask in the first place! However, OP I do not think you are in the wrong for asking for your items. Get your freebies if you can!

Ya know, I was at TJ Maxx last year offering the same promo. I reminded her she did not ask and she was incensed that I had the audacity to ask for a free product. Then she said we are technically closed after 10:00. I said, "Well, you didn't have a problem ringing me out at 10:05. The manager finally had to come and ok the stinkin' 2-liter of coke. Oh brother, they really made me feel horrible and CHEAP!

I do NOT believe this was ever the policy at Toys R Us, or any major retailer. But it could count against the cashier at her annual review, when they decide what % increase she will get. I would not think missing customers here and there, once in awhile, would matter.

I have been a cashier, and sometimes they want us to ask 5 different questions at the register, and it is ridiculous, but part of the job.

I would be happy that they didn't waste my time with the question especially this time of year when the lines tend to be long.

If you've been a cashier then I would think that you wouldn't want to give them a hard time. My DS works at a Grocery store and it's given me a whole new perspective on the hassles they deal with from demanding customers. Not to mention that having to give you the free item will likely get them into a bit of trouble- negative review. Not worth it to me.

If the free coke and Hershey bar was worth holding up the line and slowing things down then go for it but I never have and hope that I wouldn't.

A friend of mine works at walgreens and yes, they (the cashier) pays for the free item.

I totally agree here. I feel bad for the cashiers with the added requirements and would not risk them getting in trouble because they forgot to ask.

My DH manages a TRU. Promotions like this do not come out of the cashier's check. However, this is the kind of thing that they get in BIG trouble for. If they dont make their numbers for battery sales, credit card apps or whatever the push of the moment is they get fewer hours the next week or are considered for termination after awhile. I think it's silly, but it's howTRU operates.
